the boys as southern things
A/N: so im southern and i think about dating these brits and explaining/sharing some of my favorite southern things
lets play a game called which southern state am i from? i feel like this gives it away.
Tom had filmed in Atlanta, so you thought that he'd at least seen a Cookout, and with any luck, already been to one, so he'd understand your excitement for visiting home. Tom, however, did not understand. In the past, you'd drunkenly asked Tom what the British version of Cookout was, and if they were open as late as Cookout, but truthfully he didn't know what exactly Cookout was to you. He'd taken you to any fast food place he could find that was still open, and you got the burger, so from a few drunk nights, Tom figured out that it was a burger place, but that was about it. He'd tried to play games after you'd lived in London for a while, asking you to compare American things to British things, but that didn't work very well either, as the only response he got was "Cookout is Cookout".
When he finally got to visit home with you, he was excited to finally learn about Cookout. It was the first place you took Tom after seeing your family again.
"It's more of the experience of Cookout than anything else, so you're going to get a tray, I'm going to get a tray, and we'll split a watermelon milkshake," you said, trying not to sound too bossy, but it was important he got the full cookout experience. You could've also shared a tray, but it was the first time you'd had Cookout in a long time, so you felt like you deserved to pig out a little.
"Drive through or Window?"
"Drive through, then we sit in the car and eat. If we had a truck we'd sit in the bed, but this will do," you responded, barely paying attention. Tom adoringly smiled towards you, he was happy to see you so excited to share something from home with him.
Tom was excited to try a burger and the best cajun fries, according to you, but he wasn't too sure about the watermelon milkshake. You had warned that the first few bites were a bit strange, the sweetness frozen watermelon made the ice cream a little salty, not to mention the texture of frozen watermelon was a little unusual, but you promised it was good. Tom was pleasantly surprised and he fully agreed, it was good. He finally understood Cookout, you were right, "Cookout is cookout".
wow how about now can you tell what state im from, if cookout didnt give me away cheerwine sure will
You never really craved Cheerwine, or any soda at all, but when Harry brought home this soda he found at the grocery, you really craved that Cheerwine. He didn't even know that it was something from America, he thought it was some artisanal soda, it was in a glass bottle after all. When Harry saw you light up at the sight of Cheerwine, he knew it was something from home.
You had been missing home for the last few weeks, making American biscuits and having eggs and bacon for breakfast. You were so happy to be living in London with your boyfriend of 4 years, but you did really miss those cornfields and windey backroads. Harry planned on flying home with you for Thanksgiving, but that was still a month away, and you weren't entirely sure that you'd make it. Cheerwine, unexpectedly, was exactly what you needed for a small dose of home, just to hold you over.
"Baby! You found Cheerwine!" you squealed, jumping off the couch to wrap your arms around his neck. Harry wrapped his free arm around your waist, holding you against him. You pulled his face into yours, kissing his squished face profusely.
"You're welcome?" Harry questioned as he followed you into the kitchen, where you took the Cheerwine after taking it out his hands. It was so smooth, he barely noticed that you'd taken the carton and already had a glass bottle pulled out, ready to be opened.
You hadn't expected this Cheerwine to be exactly the same, the Brits don't like as much sugar in their drinks. That was the main reason you never really wanted soda or sweet tea, it was just too much sugar, but Cheerwine was a treat, it always had been. Even in the south most restaurants don't have Cheerwine, so when one did, it was an exciting time. That's part of why you got so excited when you saw Harry walk in carrying Cheerwine, thinking he'd found a new drink for you two to try.
This Cheerwine may have travelled all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, but it tasted exactly the same, in fact, a little bit better because it was out of a glass bottle instead of a soda fountain. A grin broke out across your face, your throat tickling a little as the carbonation bubbled. Harry couldn't help but chuckle at the sheer bliss on your face. You handed off the bottle to him, wanting to see his reaction to this special drink. It was kind of amazing seeing the person you called home merge with a place you called home. In that moment of Harry bringing home Cheerwine, you felt your heart grow even more full with love for your ginger haired love. After Harry had a few bottles, he really enjoyed the taste, it dawned on him that you were a lot like Cheerwine: sweet and tasty, a little feisty like the red color and slight burn of the carbonation, and he throughly enjoyed it. It reminded Harry of you, his person he called home, just as it reminded you of your place home, so slowly he started affectionately calling you his Cheerwine.
more specifically pulled pork with a side of slaw and hushpuppies. how about now? which state?
Harrison met you when he was Tom's personal assistant on the Spiderman set. You were a secondary character, but that didn't mean you were any less excited to be there, though you tried to keep your cool and not show too much loud excitement. Harrison had only met you briefly, but he still saw the excitement written all over your face, he thought it was adorable, he thought you were adorable. The majority of filming Harrison spent watching you, giving you complete heart eyes, and everyone noticed. Zendaya, with Tom's help, took it upon herself to get that poor lovestruck boy to ask you out. Little did he know, or notice, you had been looking at him like that too, and again, everyone knew. It was Zendaya's idea to throw a Barbeque party; you'd been boasting about making some mean ribs and pulled pork, so Z really wanted to see if your words were true, but also, she knew Haz loved to cook. It was the perfect opportunity to get these two people, completely enthralled with one another, to spend some alone time together, doing a thing they both loved.
It started with Haz offering to join you at the grocery store. He didn't know American barbeque in the way you did, but he could make a pretty good burger, so he also needed to pick up supplies. You decided that pulled pork sandwiches was the way to go, so when Harrison found you looking at vinegars, he was a little confused.
"Why are you looking that intensely at vinegar," Harrison asked cautiously.
"Vinegar based barbeque sauce. That's how we do it back home," you said, still looking at the two options you'd narrowed it down to, "and I like to make my own." You grinned up at Harrison, finally making your selection and walking to the registers. Zendaya's plan worked, in the short amount of time together at the grocery, you'd already learned so much about Harrison, and seeing you on the grocery store floor looking at vinegars made Harrison's crush grow into a full blown like.
The chemistry you two had in the kitchen made you two, and everyone else, even more interested in your relationship. You'd offer Haz a taste of your barbeque sauce, occasionally handing off napkins or kitchen utensils whenever Harrison asked. He offered to cut your onions for you, everyone's least favorite part, and watching you, with a small smile, put so much care into your food. When everything was finally ready, Harrison was so excited to get to taste your down-home style Southern barbeque and see what the heck hushpuppies were. You watched Harrison's face for any reaction as he took his first bite of the pulled pork sandwich; not only was it your own cooking, but you also really wanted this Brit to like something southern, it was an important trait in a boyfriend. Haz broke out into a big smile, "this is amazing Y/N!" he said, mouth still full. It was safe to say that no one was suprised when you came back from a date, holding hands, a few days later.
Sam: Shug, Honey, Hun, Sweetie, Darlin, Yall
Even though you had been living with Sam in London for a while, you still had a slight accent and still used yoyr favorite southern pet names. At first Sam teased you for your accent, noticing that it was only really noticable when you were excited or angry. You would call out a loud "Oh lordy!" whenever you had something exciting to say, usually followed by a "yall" or two. All of the Hollands would attempt to say "yall" correctly, but they never could. After one night when you had a little more alcohol than you planned on, Sam got you you explain the proper pronunciation of "yall".
"It's not y'all with the L's. We never say the L," you slurred. "It's yaaw. If you just think the L, thats enough L."
The first time you said "oh bless your heart" Sam was so confused. In the south you couldn't really use those slang terms directly to others, everyone knew what it meant, so it was mainly reserved for gossip and jokes, but in London, nobody had any idea about your southern colloquialisms.
Eventually you told Sam about the southern woman's slang, explaining the use of "bless your heart" and those pet names when they weren't said to someone you actually liked. He never thought he'd actually hear you use those pet names, but after a particularly rude fan asked you to hold all her things and take a picture of Sam, all while flirting with your boyfriend, infront of you, it was bound to come out.
"Absolutely sweetie" you said, a bright smile plastered on your face. Only Sam noticed that your southern accent was ever so slightly stronger than it was before. As the girl left she said something about how wonderful you were for being willing to take pictures for all of your boyfriend's fans.
"Oh bless your heart, shug. That's so sweet," you said with that same smile as before.
Sam hugged you and kissed your temple.
"That was a little bit terrifying," he said, lightly laughing.
You couldn't help but smile at your boyfriend's revelation.
"That's the point, darlin." You answered back, giving him a quick peck, before you grabbed his hand and kept walking, not letting some rude fan ruin your day with your loving boyfriend, who was starting to understand the saying "whiskey in a teacup".
