Dorsal Light Response - a reflex that causes insects to turn their backs towards a light source to orient themselves during flight.
on the other side of this: i started reading a book in which the author sometimes just randomly inserts ultra specific words no one uses just to sound smart and she uses them wrong more often than not.
like i saw her use a verb i've never heard of, looked up the definition, and it was actually a noun. not as in she verbified a noun on purpose (like "googling"), as in she just wanted to use a big, super specific word, and didn't even get the word type right.
basically don't shy away from using specific terminology you're familiar with because you think someone might not understand, but whatever you do, don't go out looking for more obscure language to use to make yourself sound smarter, you're gonna sound like an idiot.
The dictionary goes both ways
Calvin and Hobbes' big vocabularies would've given these kids aneurysms.
Calvin and Hobbes' big vocabularies expanded mine when I was a kid. That's how kids learn new words and terms and stuff: by being exposed to them, especially in things they like!
I'm starting to go the opposite direction of all the "you're a literal baby infant until 25 bc your bwain is a baby bwain :(" shit
We should be treating teens as more adult than we do. I don't mean some lowering the age of consent creep shit, I mean presuming competence. Get a job, learn life skills, learn to cook, be fully responsible for a pet, walk places alone (in daylight) or with a friend, have intergenerational friendships, teach skills to littler kids, be someone people can trust with more than wiping their own ass. Be someone they themselves can trust to do stuff and go places. We're stealing children's confidence by treating them like they can't do anything. Treat them like they can and should do many adult things and more will find the confidence to practice at them.
Yes, the brain isn't finished growing when you're like 15. No, you shouldn't get treated like a preschooler till it is. The general experience of adulthood is like 90% practice 10% maturity I think. The maturity is needed but it doesn't account for much if you just do nothing.
YES. And with support! Teach your teens to make their own doctors appointments by sitting by them in case something comes up they don't know the answer to. Show your elementary schoolers how to cook a meal. Teach them how to read a map and guide you where they want to go. Kids are capable.
Your brain develops when you fucking use it, so let teens use their brains!
Everything here except 'get a job' because education is already a full-time job.
I say this as a person who did labor for money as a child and teenager and should not have had to.
And especially: *teach your kids, however small, what they can do in emergencies." That learning (because you trusted them with it as important) will sink deep into their brains and help them cope for the rest of their lives. They will know, from tiny times, what coping looks like. It'll lead them toward strengths they never knew they had.
When I was still nursing in NY and occasionally helped out our colleagues in ER, several times I saw small children who'd been taught what to do save their whole families from burning buildings by having been coached in how to use the phone to call for help and say what the trouble was, even when their parents and other older kids were unresponsive.
Teach your kids to rely on themselves, even when "people who'll tell them what to do if they're not sure" are unavailable. ...Because they may not always be available.
#I uh...ahaha...whut?#as a tween/teen in the 80s and early 90s that was EXACTLY what my life was LIKE#I am a little horrified to realize this is no longer common experience#it maybe does explain some shit but goddamn
Yeah, watching this pendulum swing has been wild as shit. College age kids who haven't been taught to do anything but sit there with their mouths open like baby birds, begging someone to put food in.
Which, tangentially, is why the current GenAI tool scams are working so well, because GUESS WHAT THOSE DO.
My mom bought a toy phone and played 911 with us a couple of times a week when I was 6 and my sister was 5. We'd wait in another room while she set up an "emergency", then she'd call for us and we'd come in, identify the situation, go to the phone and call 911, and roleplay the call with her as the operator.
Some "emergencies" I remember:
Barbie fell off her bicycle and is not moving
A fire in the kitchen trash can
Tyrannosaurus in the bath tub with its head under water
Tyrannosaurus hurt its foot and can't walk
Barbie got stung by a bee and can't breathe
Barbie is sleeping but we can't wake her up
Tyrannosaurus got hit by a car
We'd see the situation, identify that we couldn't solve it ourselves, rush to the toy phone and call 911 (actually 000 because we're not in the US), say our full names and address that we had memorised, where we were pretending the emergency happened (school, grandparents' house, the park) and why we needed help.
As a result, when my dad fell off a ladder and cut open his leg to the bone, my 8-year-old sister could call for an ambulance and probably saved his life.
*
Similarly, my nibbling is 5 and we're playing shopping for groceries. When I pick them up from kindergarten, I'll ask them what they want for dinner. Then we'll go to the grocery store and they'll get a kiddie cart and go around picking out what we need (and one treat for dessert, this is THE MOST serious decision), and at home we cook together.
The important part is giving THEM the choice of what they'll want to eat, letting them take ownership of their choice, and then assisting them in succeeding with their decision. Teaching agency to children is one of the most important tasks we have.
Yeah we are definitely at the "insane infantalization" equivalent to 3yo chimney sweeps and 6yo factory workers losing their fingers in machines
I've seen about 100 responses of "no no no no teens DON'T need jobs that's EVIL you want to take away all their RIGHTS" which is just. Utterly fucking borked as a concept, that folks think a teen making their own money and learning how to manage it is the same as the child exploitation that labor laws protect us from lmfao
The common reaction to minors having jobs is cartoonish in intensity. IIRC there was a state that had an extra layer of permission slip needed for teens to have jobs. No real protections to it, it was literally just an extra layer of red tape for minors.
So they decided to get rid of that and people's minds went straight to toddlers crawling in machinery.
And teens not having jobs is a big part of why shopping malls are dying; no kids with pocket money to buy things.
No money, not allowed to walk anywhere, no unscheduled free time, etc
"Education is a full time job" so no one here ever heard of summer? Also have we considered that education SHOULD NOT be a full time job and that making kids sit and labor over a pencil 8 hours a day is probably not as good for the developing brain as mixing it up with a few hours of real world work experience?
But then they wouldn't have a line to parrot
I was having dinner with someone the other day and he was complaining about Elon having a few more zeroes to his bank account. So I had to explain the difference between assets and cash as well as explain what a stock is.
The funny thing is I went over this in episode 3 of the foxy freedom snapping turtle podcast. But in short I always have to explain to these people that functionally most of that money doesn't even actually exist. Net worth is at best an estimate of what his companies are worth and that value isn't static. That value could literally be $1,000 tomorrow. Granted that would cause significant problems to the stock market as a whole, but the majority of wealth in this nation is literally tied up in imaginary money that does not exist as a solid currency. Unfortunately explaining this to people for economically illiterate is basically impossible due to the fact that they would rather think with their emotions rather than think with their head.
tbh i don’t think any aesthetic or fandom is inherently leftist. people will say “you can’t be goth/punk/emo/alt/whatever if you’re not a leftist!” and “how do conservative star trek fans exist?” and like. it’s simple. they’re literally just aesthetics and fandoms. there is nothing inherently leftist about dressing a certain way, or listening to certain music, or watching certain tv shows.
i think a lot of people want to believe that performing a certain aesthetic or being in a certain fandom makes you a better leftist, because they’re at least semi-aware that they aren’t doing enough. but instead of going out and trying to improve anything, they just reframe something they’re already doing as radical and leftist.
Also, a lot of right wingers are just amazingly obtuse. They can watch a show or sing along to a song with a heavy-handed message and just completely miss the point in a way that is staggering.
Like, Star Trek has historically included 100% intentional political content-- not very far leftist political content, but metaphors, allegories, morals, and casting choices that were meant to be progressive for their time. Participating in Star Trek fandom does not make you progressive or center-left, just like participating in Tolkien fandom does not make you a conservative Catholic. And if conservative dudes who love space lasers and hate "wokeness" were just going, "Jim Kirk is a badass. I don't care about all that diversity bullshit," they would be pretty much equal-and-opposite to progressive-leaning Tolkien fans. But no, every time a new Trek comes out, there's somebody going, "Keep politics out of Star Trek! Make Trek apolitical again, like it was when I was watching TOS/TNG/DS9!" They didn't just notice the message and disagree-- they apparently didn't pick up on it at all, even though Star Trek is not subtle. There are Republicans who will say that their favorite band is Rage Against The Machine, and instead of adding "I don't agree with their politics, but the music slaps," they'll claim that the band's early lyrics had no obvious political content, and not even seem to realize what an own goal it is to admit they missed that.
Star Trek has histoircally included a lot of stuff that would be considered very progressive for its day, but would be mainstream and middle-of-the-road today.
Also, you are literally the sort of person OP was talking about.
I think also that part of the issue with people arguing everything in Trek was left-wing is that... Not everything in trek was left-wing. Hell, if you described the major plot arcs in DS9 outside of Trek context A lot of people would start having 'issues' with it. Like, just as a meta-example...
The actual Son Of God comes to Not-Israel to help them after being oppressed by the bigoted fascists, and then has to work to keep the traumatized genocide survivors from constant civil war. The major foes are Fascists who've held control over the planet and consider it more theirs than the natives, and later Collectivist fascists who see people as interchangeable and spend all their time infiltrating groups to suborn them.
The Greedy Capitalists are trusted allies and comic relief, often critical help. The Plucky Underdogs have a chip on their shoulder. The local Fascist(2) Cop is a popular support, the Plucky Doctor is an arrogant Poonhound, the local representative of Fascists(1) is a conniving spy. The Son of God gets his hands dirty to win the war.
And when everything is said and done the Son of God beats up the Antichrist and ascends to Heaven, and all is right with the world!
Now, in 2026, do you think you'd be able to get away with a story like that?
I think that people like sparkling lake monster kinda expect media to educate the masses... But the attitude is kinda "people should uncritically assimilate into the message exposed by the media they consume"
The thing is, just because it's not about politics you don't agree with, it doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, if they're good to begin with.
The simplest example would be Don't look up, a very good movie with an overt "progressive" message. Regardless I mostly relate to the feeling of being surrounded by idiots... Or rather, being surrounded by people more concerned with the politics of stuff, rather than the material reality, both ways.
This is what happens when you start treating politics like fandom and fandom like religion, is what I'm saying
I wish kinky sex ed wasn't so stigmatized even among left-leaning "sex positive" circles. Everyone's all "uwu I'm a sub I'll do anything you ask" okay mommy wants you to read The New Bottoming Book so you learn how to sub without hurting yourself since your sex ed up to this point is porn and your ex boyfriend Jared who liked to choke you incorrectly
I’m so glad you asked! Let me list off what I’ve got for you:
Books I personally recommend:
- The New Topping Book and The New Bottoming Book, by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy
If you’re having kinky sex at all, you need to read at least one of these two books. Point blank. They’ll teach you the very basics of negotiating properly (which is critical!), and help you identify what you are and aren’t into.
- Mindfucking Mindfully, by Sir Ezra Where this book really shines isn’t actually in helping you “mindfuck” people, it’s in taking a close look at how to do so ethically. It’s a great answer to the question “how do I get someone to consent to something and still surprise and shock them with it?”
- Real Service by Raven Kaldera and Joshua Tenpenny This is a slightly niche pick but there simply isn’t a better book on the subject. It’s written from a 24/7 M/s perspective, which is not what I do, but the book itself is an indispensable guide to giving and receiving service. The phrase “if the Master doesn’t want it, it isn’t service” will be burned into my psyche for quite some time. I love this book a lot. Maybe my favorite out of all of these.
- Enough To Make You Blush: Exploring Erotic Humiliation, by Princess Kali This one’s high on my reading list; I’ve heard it recommended by a number of people whose opinions on these things I trust.
- Pretty Much Anything Midori Has Ever Done Midori is a great resource for this stuff - I haven’t personally read much of her work, but she’s a well known sex educator and great at what she does. She’s known for bondage, but has a lot of range beyond that.
- This Negotiations Worksheet from Bex Talks Sex This is what I default to using a lot of the time for negotiations. Forget BDSMtest, you don’t need that, it’s no good. Just look through this worksheet’s wordbank with your partner. Big fan especially of the “how do you want to feel?” section.
Books I can kind of recommend:
- The Ultimate Guide to Kink, edited by Tristan Taormino This book is weird. There’s a lot of good info for experienced players, but some of what’s written here skeeves me out. I think if I had a top that thought the way some of the tops in here think, they would not be topping me for long. But there’s some good techniques and so on to pick up that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I liked the distinction one of the authors makes between being sadistic in the sense of inflicting pain and being sadistic in the sense of doing something your sub doesn’t “enjoy.”
- The Ritual of Dominance and Submission, by David English Man, this book fucking sucks. The writing and editing are garbage, and the fear and protocol play described need way more careful negotiation than he ever lets on, let alone recommends. This is some 50 Shades bullshit. The only time I recommend this book is to tops like me who tend to be very affirming to their partners and need a guide on how to really scare them - when their partner consents and when you negotiate it, which this book sucks at teaching you. Really good content on fear, punishment, and protocol play, really terrible presentation of the topic though. Don’t read this if you don’t already know what you’re doing.
- Paradigms of Power, by Raven Kaldera I love this book. Great book. Very focused on 24/7 M/s play though, and, being an anthology, some chapters are better than others. If you can’t read something and pick out what is and isn’t for you, don’t bother. But some really great inspiration, and generally pretty well written. Big fan of the discussion of leather throughout the book.
Hope some of these are helpful for people ^-^ for the average person reading this I recommend New Bottoming/Topping, but they’re all important parts of my library and I’ve recommended all of them to friends at some point or another.
May I also suggest Hell on Wheels and Kneeling in Spirit by Raven Kaldera, d/s companion books that address kink with a disability. They're a should read for everyone, imo. You never know when you or a partner are going to have changes in your body that affect what you can physically do. Temporary illness/injury and even just age can affect your sex life.
I'd like to suggest Better Bondage for Every Body! It goes really in depth on anatomy, pain processing, self-tying, and has chapters specifically focusing on how to do rope bondage on/for someone who is disabled or has chronic pain, which was really important to me.
Reblog if you too do not want to share outside with them.
Saying that kinks are a "white person thing" is a common tactic to appeal to the masses of fandomite worms who's only understanding of racial politics is some harebrained oversimplification of usamerican racial politics and will obey like stupid dogs when you arbitrary assign something to whiteness. There is a very insidious flipside of these kinds of statements that participating in kink means you cannot be racialized (which does get employed in practice when these demons accuse people of being white for ???).
You usually see this kind of tactic employed by sexually reactionary racialized users who have the "position" to pull this tactic for social gain among worthless fandomites but I'm glad it works just as well if a cracker does it too.
Oh yeah they love doing this. White people love calling me white when they're mad at me, its an effective microaggression.
#it is# out of touch thursday #after all
You got me there Beans
trying to create an ebay account to sell smthn and tell me why I can't use my REAL LEGAL LAST NAME because it includes "dick" which ebay considers offensive
BUT THEN IN THEIR MISREPRESENTATION POLICY THEY SAY YOU CAN'T COLLECT MONEY TO A BANK ACCOUNT THAT'S NOT IN YOUR BUSINESS OR LEGAL NAME. BUT MY LEGAL NAME INCLUDES DICK, WHICH YOU CONSIDER OFFENSIVE.
the sanitization of the internet is so fucking stupid we live in the stupidest time
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
Not only is having worldbuilding threads that are mentioned once and never picked up again not a flaw in fantasy media, I'd go so far as to say that a lack of such threads is a flaw. If everything ties up in one neat little package, you're missing the point of fantasy worldbuilding. Like, don't do it on every page, or your setting is going to be an overstuffed mess, but every so often you are not only allowed but obligated to casually drop some utterly batshit worldbuilding detail and then just never follow up on it. Maybe some rocks are sentient. You don't owe your reader an explanation. Just fucking go for it.
We really fucked up when we made checkov's gun mandatory instead of just a high recommendation.

#google translate does not capture the tone switch so i have to say. first two sentences are like. normal maybe kind of feminine posting tone #& the last is like. shounen manga protagonist. action movie hero. jojo's bizarre adventure character. #the tone you would use if you were holding a gun with the safety off (– @chadlesbianjasontodd)
Basically, a translation could be:
I just think it's so interesting that people end up falling in love with their friends' boyfriends! I absolutely despise every single one of them. give me my fucking homie back you goddamn bastard
