❝Mmmm. Except you’re not the one callin’ the shots here.❞
It’s matter-of-fact, devoid of the animosity that comes off the vigilante in waves. Actually, it’s devoid of emotion as a whole. « The woman’s letting her frustration at Bones affect her judgement, and it’s all very office politics and petty arguments and - she’s a goddamn soldier not a mediator. They’re here to do a job. »
❝You’re on thin ice.❞ « See: personal babysitter. And Shaw can see why. » ❝So unless you want Bones to comin’ down on you harder, I’d suggest you give him what he wants.❞
❝’Sides, I thought you hero types could take on anything. Who’s to say we can’t do both?❞
She can’t help the raise of an eyebrow, defiant against the unconcealed distaste and unflinching in the Batwoman’s shadow. It wasn’t just that it was getting tiresome, it’s hard to imagine being anywhere near functional with a chip of that size on her shoulder.
❝Look, you’re not winning any brownie points with this little tantrum of yours, and it’s sure as hell not gonna get the DEO off you ass any quicker. So how about you save it for later and we can go clean up your city instead, hmm? I’ll get you your one-on-one with the supplier, but I’m turnin’ him in to the DEO at the end of this.❞
oh, for fuck’s sake. she has to ball her hands into fists to physically restraint herself from snatching the woman up by the flaps of her jacket and telling her exactly what she thinks of her, of the D.E.O., of bones. for one, there isn’t enough time. for two, the last thing she needs is for this one to run back and snitch and get her saddled with a third, potentially worse pain in her ass. for the sake of her own sanity, she draws in a deep breath through her nose, exhales it just the same, and decides to let it go. does she give bones’ lackey the satisfaction of hearing her say that? hell no.
“ how much are they paying you to shill for them? ” she asks, a pernicious twist at the edge of her smirk, “ or do you just really like licking those boots? ”
batwoman stiffly brushes past her, toward the ledge of the roof where the building’s fire escape lingers just a few feet below. they still have some time before their targets pull up, but she’ll have an easier time getting the drop on them if she infiltrates their rendezvous point ahead of their arrival. another brush of her fingers along the edge of her masks sees the white lenses abruptly turn red, her normal vision replaced by thermal imaging to scan the immediate area and the building across the street. JUST A PRECAUTION to ensure that she is the only one with the element of surprise on her side.
“ all clear, ” and the white eyes are back ( GLOWING EERILY IN THE SHADOWS SHE SINKS INTO ON HER WAY TO THE FIRE ESCAPE ), a crimson boot secured at the very edge of the rooftop. “ i’m going in i don’t care what you do with the supplier afterward, but i will get him first. ”
