So, this spell got out of hand when the creature fed on his blood. And the time Coco's spell was way too powerful, it was because the brimmed cap mixed his own blood into the ink... I'm not sure if this is where it's going or not, but is it possible that has something to do with the history of the witches who used magic for healing? Like, I'd imagine if they're working with a lot of injured people, getting blood mixed in with the ink is going to happen at some point, right?
Coco looking at that monstrosity and thinking, however briefly, if it's possible she was responsible for it. I mean, given that she was never told why her spell at the staircase river went out of control, it's understandable she could think it might happen again.
Chapter 64
Ah, there was a second seal that the water was heading towards! I was wondering how Agott was able to somehow make them go directly to the sewer.
(Not gonna lie, that is the only scene I distinctly remember from that movie)
A store of blood, you say? That could either be very useful, or veeeery dangerous, depending on who/what gets there first. (Wait... they know how to do blood transfusions??)
Chapter 65

Exactly -- if there is any witch you can trust to skirt around the rules for a good reason, it's Qifrey! (.... graaaaanted, I'm still not entirely sure what to make of the mind wiping thing. I mean, I assume he has a good reason given the kind of person he seems to be, but that also shows he is willing to erase memories for what he considers to be a good reason, right?)
"With the appearance of a young girl"... is she not actually a child? I guess another brimmed cap did mention something along the lines of forbidden magic being able to let you stay young forever. So, that is a possibility.
Is that ink she wants to give the king? Is their goal to reveal the secret of magic to him?
Ooooh. The person whose memories you stole, coming back to save your life.
Chapter 66
Ininia actually does look guilty, hearing that Galga is someone who prioritized saving people. Whatever her motives are, she probably does believe she has a good reason for doing what she is doing. She certainly seems less unhinged than the other two brimmed caps we've seen so far... even if she is still cool with threatening children.
Adults can be apprentices too? Huh. That actually makes a lot of sense as the solution to allowing Galga stay with Atwert then, even without his memories. That's gotta be tough though, caring about somebody so much when they don't even know who you are.
Galga carrying Ininia makes her look so small. I didn't realize how small she was.

I get where Tetia is coming from... but there's a pretty big difference of consequences between learning how to properly clean and bandage a wound, and revealing the secret of magic. One of those things might get you an undeserved scolding. The other could get your entire mind wiped.
COCO WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Qifrey is supposed to be the one protecting YOU!!

Chapter 58
I really like Agott's inner conflict here. Like, the thoughts of wanting Coco to fail so that she'll have less competition come so automatically to her, even as she is actively scolding herself for thinking it.

Coco making magic for herself instead of others, and Agott making magic for Coco instead of herself. I love that. This conversation is beautiful.

Chapter 59
Olruggio noticing the bangles... and then completely misinterpreting why they are a secret.
You're not talking about Coco here, are you Qifrey?
Olruggio seems surprisingly laid back about Coco keeping secrets, given how upset he was about Qifrey doing it. Granted, it's a bit of a different situation, but still.
The king wants the power of magic on his side... is that why Ininia wants an audience with him?
The term "witch king" sounds so evil... or maybe that's just because of Tolkien.
Chapter 60
Qifrey is being so gentle and non-pushy about asking if they need help. It's actually really sweet. (But yes, somebody please help these children!!)

Coco is such a good person. Of course she didn't take into account that people are largely selfish.

Chapter 62
This is beautiful.
Coco and Agott are very good complements to one a other, in the way that I imagine Qifrey and Olruggio might have been as kids.
I didn't make notes as I went this time, so this is mostly just me rambling about things in no particular order, haha:
Coco and Tartah's hesitancy to tell Qifrey about what's going on makes sense. Custas is working with a brimmed cap, and Qifrey does not like the brimmed caps... but surely he'd have sympathy for a child who felt like he had no other choice, right?? Plus, I doubt Qifrey would willingly go to the Knights Moralis. First, because he's made it pretty clear that his whole mission to track down the brimmed caps is something he is doing solo. Second, he just flat out does not like the Knights Moralis, and seems to dislike the idea of wiping memories in general (..... unless he's the one doing it, I suppose. But Coco wasn't aware of either of those instances). But mainly, these two should really tell an adult what is going on here.
One of the more humorous moments of the volume: Coco asking if she could perform in the procession, and Agott is just like... EXCUSE ME?! Yeah, that's an understandable reaction from her.
Dagda is living in a nightmarish time loop right now, oh my gosh. Poor guy. He didn't ask for any of this. And then Custas, watching his dad die over and over again every single day... Custas may be going down a dark path, but how he got there is understandable. And like Coco said, she easily could have ended up in a similar situation herself if a brimmed cap had been the one to come to her aid that day instead of Qifrey.
The idea here seems to be that forbidden magic always comes with a terrible cost. Dagda's is obvious... so, what cost is Custas going pay for his legs? (But also, the design of them shifting into talons is sooooo cool!)
Agott's desire to prove herself is completely understandable. But I just want to sit her down and tell her that the people who want you to fail? What they think of you doesn't matter. You don't have to prove anything to them.
I love Richeh. That's all.
Very curious to see where this storyline with Tetia and the prince is going. Does he actually value a friendship with Tetia on a personal level, or is he viewing it solely through the lense of it being advantageous to him? Or maybe a bit of both?
So, it is possible for wiped memories to naturally return in "exceptional cases"? What would qualify as an exceptional case? Was Qifrey able to recover some of his stolen memories after all? Maybe he had initially abandoned his search for the brimmed caps not because he found out it was impossible to restore his memories, but because he already did? There is so much I could theorize about when it comes to Qifrey and his backstory, but that could be an entire essay on its own.
Anyways. I've reached the end of the manga volumes I currently have checked out from my local library... but I caved and ordered the series to own. Volume 11 should be arriving tomorrow! Volume 12 was sold out and on backorder everywhere, for some reason... so, that one's still gonna require a library trip for now, because I am not waiting that long!

Chapter 46
I'd sort of just assumed that nothing would happen if you drew a circle without anything inside. Huh.
I love how Qifrey always dives right in front of his apprentices when there's danger. It really does feel like the safest place in the world is by his side... you know, if his atelier wasn't also of particular interest to a group of dangerous witches that routinely targets children.
Aww, Richeh's rings! It's like a magic distress beacon. Very practical from a safety standpoint, but also incredibly touching. And she made one for Olruggio too, I assume? (Or it could be for someone else... not sure who else that would be, though)
Chapter 47
I want an owlcat!
Nolnoa wearing two pairs of glasses was cut from the anime, right?? Had to look it up to make sure I didn't just miss it. I do understand the reasoning why, although it is kinda sad because that's such a fun little character design detail!
OLRUGGIO SHAVED??? I have to admit, when I first saw Olruggio in the anime I absolutely thought the goatee did not suit his face at all and he should ditch it. Now he looks so weird without it.
Ohh, it's a spell. I do find it funny that "looking his best" is apparently goatee-less.
I love Qifrey and Olruggio nagging each other back and forth to take care of themselves.
Oh, contraptions can't even enter the castle? Does that include Qifrey's glasses? Coco looks so saddened by the idea that a king would want no magic in his home.

Chapter 49
I was a little surprised to see that content warning here, but I appreciate it being included.
The Knights Moralis are flawed, and their ethics are questionable. But I love that this series keeps bringing up these ideas of like -- "the ethics of this group are questionable at best, but sometimes they do also have valid points."
I feel like there are so many other stories where such an "illicit contraption" would just be treated as a joke. It's actually pretty refreshing to see it taken seriously.
Oh? Custas isn't with him? Did he go off with the brimmed cap on his own??

Awww, Coco. It must be so hard seeing yourself in these people, but being unable to correct the lie that magic is something you need to be born with.
Oh. OH. The witch didn't just undo the damage to Custas's legs. She gave him new ones.
Chapter 51
Oh, they're just something he's wearing? Like a prosthetic? I guess that's okay, then.

Coco, use the ring! "If anything happens" -- I think this qualifies as "anything"!!
I would continue on to the next chapter now if it wasn't already midnight on a work day. Man. What a place to leave off for the night.

I had been wondering if Coco was going to run into Custas back when she got taken to the hospital for her fever, but then figured we probably wouldn't be seeing him again when that turned out not to be the case. So I'm happy to see him again after all!
I've listened to some YouTubers with disabilities talk about the difference between the medical model of disability (focuses on "fixing/curing" the disability) and the social model of disability (focuses on making society more accessible for everyone), and the way Coco and Tartah want to improve the world for Custas reminds me so much of that!
The end of this volume was SO CLOSE to being very bright and uplifting... and then. Then it was not. Oh boy. This is going to have ramifications for sure.
The design of that ribbon floating to turn the pointed cap into a brimmed cap. WOW. I love that.
