Pattern Recognition of Environmental Impacts of Cities
Have been working in a new paper on patter recognition of environmental impacts of cities with pals Marcio Cataldi and Vinicius Netto. From a database containing some 40 indicators of urban environmental impact, we have performed some data mining willing to recognize the patterns. In the database there where aprox 130 cities around the globe.
We have performed basic correlation, PCAs and dendogram (between indicators and cities) analysis.
In general, we observed that the while developing demographically and economically, a city's population, individually, seem to adopt less sustainable habits, including changes in their consumption pattern. However, counter-intuitively, cities seem to become more efficient with respect to their impact as a entity, in respect to its subsystems such as water distribution and waste treatment.
I will soon post the complete paper, with more results and a explanation of the methodology.
