Seminar "Urban Analysis Through Mobility Data" on December 28, 2025

KAIST CEE Urban Design Lab Seminar “Urban Analysis Through Mobility Data" will be held at Applied Engineering Building at KAIST at 4:30 pm on December 28, 2025. Prof. Junyong Choi will present his recent research outcomes in using mobility data for urban analysis.

Prof. Choi is an assistant professor in the School of Urban Planning and Real Estate at Dankook University and an alumnus at the KAIST Urban Design Lab. Prior to joining Dankook University, he was a research associate at the Urban Big Data Centre, University of Glasgow, UK. He received his PhD, MSc, and BSc from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at KAIST. His research interests include urban data analysis, urban energy, transportation geography, and urban decline, with a particular focus on studying the interaction between urban space and urban mobility.

Ms. Hanew Suh has been selected for National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) PhD Fellowship for her research, investigating temporal changes in urban recreational places and activities. Congratulations!

Dr. Yesuel Kim appointed as Assistant Professor at Handong Global University

Dr. Yesuel Kim has been appointed as an assistant professor in the School of AI Convergence at Handong Global University in September 2025. Prof. Kim will teach courses about urban AI and urban environmental planning, and continuously investigate urban environmental planning topics focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation with AI. Congratulations!

Ms. Pamela Anna Joya starts her MSc program

Ms. Pamela Anna Joya joins KAIST Urban Design Lab and starts her MSc program. She is going to investigate urban flooding mitigation using urban artificial intelligence. She completed her BSc at KAIST and was an undergraduate student intern at KAIST Urban Design Lab.

KAIST Urban Design Lab Participated in 2025 ICAPPS

KAIST Urban Design Lab presented three papers at the 2025 International Conference of Asia-Pacific Planning Societies (ICAPPS 2025) held in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It was a meaningful opportunity to share our latest research with fellow researchers across the Asia-Pacific planning community and to exchange insights on emerging urban challenges.

Ms. Hanew SUH, Ms. Junghee OH, Dr. Wonjun No Honored with Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor's Award at 2024 Seoul Data Fellowship.

Ms. Hanew SUH, Ms. Junghee OH and Dr. Wonjun No successfully finished their six-month research project at the 2024 Seoul Data Fellowship. Our research project titled <Unveiling Spatial Value of Waterfront Parks: Spatio-Temporal Dynamics in Influencing Factors of Park Visits and Built Environment-based Functional Typologies in Seoul's Han-River Park> was selected as the best research project, and received Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor's Award.

This project aims to uncover the spatial value of waterfront spaces in Seoul by analyzing their usage patterns based on mobility data. Additionally, the study examines the factors influencing these usage patterns and explore how their spatio-temporal dynamics vary using a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model.

Seminar “Generative AI Applications and Implications for Urban Design Research” on July 30, 2024

KAIST CEE Urban Design Lab Seminar “Generative AI Applications and Implications for Urban Design Research" will be held at Applied Engineering Building at KAIST at 4 pm on July 30, 2024. Dr. Kee Moon Jang will share his recent research interests in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) of urban studies.

Dr. Jang is a postdoctoral fellow at the MIT Senseable City Lab and an alumnus at the KAIST Urban Design Lab. Working at the interface between cities, people, data and design, his research interest is in leveraging data-driven approaches to understand the interaction between urban environment and people, and draw implications for future planning based on quantitative evidence. His recent projects have explored place identity and city’s visual uniqueness, geographic disparities in urban elements detected through visual AI, and the applications and implications of generative AI use for urban design.

Dr. Wonjun No receives Sejong Research Fellowship: Children’s behavior and safety analysis framework on urban streets based on computer vision for child-friendly cities

Dr. Wonjun No has been selected for the prestigious Sejong Science Fellowship for his research, developing children’s behavior and safety analysis framework on urban streets using computer vision and designing streets for children in child-friendly cities. Congratulations!

He will be supported by the fellowship (500,000,000 KRW = about 400,000 USD) for up to five years, developing children’s behavior and safety analysis framework on urban streets using computer vision and designing streets for children in child-friendly cities. The prestigious Sejong Science Fellowship is granted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

KAIST CEE Urban Design Lab Seminar “Research Approaches in Climate-responsive Urban Design and Planning" will be held at Applied Engineering Building at KAIST at 4 pm on May 21, 2024. Prof. Hyungkyoo Kim will share my research approaches in climate-responsive urban design and planning developed over the past years.

Prof. Kim is an associate professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning and directs the Environmental City Research Group at Hongik University. His work focuses on climate-responsive urban design and planning, microclimate, thermal comfort, urban heat island effects, walkability, livability, and suburbanization.
