the incest subplot? also the fact that the evil global power or w/e speaks yiddish has antisemitic implications. idk how much creative power gerard way had over the show but the incest thing was in the comic and he drew characters in nazi uniforms (regardless if those characters are villains, it’s still incredibly insensitive to jewish people)

so I recently found out that two characters from the umbrella academy were shown in nazi uniforms and it's implied they took part in the holocaust

I don't know the context but I'm going to say that casually making characters nazis, even if they're villians, is really fucked

there's no good reason to do this, using holocaust imagery for the hell of it is wildly inappropriate

from what I’ve heard it wasn’t like that in the comic so for them to make that decision, especially with the recent rise in antisemitic sentiment, is so insidious and disgusting 

I’ve seen people defend this decision saying it was just to show that they’d been around a long time and learned a lot of languages but they could’ve used literally any language other than Yiddish for that

hopefully someone learns something from this so that media like this can stop having a platform

I’ve talked about his before but, I love how the Umbrella Academy has a secret doomsday cult that has been silently manipulating world politics for hundreds of years for their ultimate goal of world destruction, and just as a bonus to that, they speak Yiddish, like, how am I supposed to interpret this? Dude should have stuck to writing emo music tbh. It would have been so easy to just Not include the detail about the evil world destruction cult being Jews. Gerard Way really had to come out as an antisemite over such an irrelevant plot detail. Went out of his way to make it like that when he could have easily just made it Latin or a madeup nonsense language like everyone else does. He had to go out of his way to pick Yiddish as his Jew cult’s language when a normal person wouldn’t have even thought of it. I feel like most gentiles don’t even know what Yiddish is and thinks to Hebrew as the Official Jew Language. He had to do his proper research to find and pick Yiddish.

alright I'm pausing the queue and putting this blog on hiatus until I can get some definitive information about gerard way's involvement in the tua show

this whole situation sucks for a lot of reasons but I definitely don't want to support anyone producing such harmful content and the fact that way hasn't spoken out about the antisemitism in the show or given a real apology for the incest in the comic is concerning

I may end up just deleting this blog and if I do I'll make sure to let you all know before I do

I don't know what else to say except that it really hurts to see all this be revealed and I know jewish fans and incest victims are hurting even more that me and I really wish things were different
