Kambun Workshop
This summer's Kambun Workshop at the University of Southern California will focus on reading selections from the late Heian Taiki courtier journal of Fujiwara Yorinaga (1120-56), son of the viceroy Tadazane. Some related documentary materials will be read as well, according to interests of members of the workshop. Yorinaga's leadership at court was a significant cause of the Hôgen rebellion of 1156.
Professor Yosuke Onoe of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute whose work on the journal is well known will lead this summer's workshop with Professor Joan Piggott of the USC Project for Premodern Japan Studies (PPJS). Participants will need to have had at least an introductory course in Kambun. The workshop will be conducted in Japanese. Dates for the month-long program are July 15 to August 9.

On April 12, at 10 AM, join us for a workshop with Professor Uejima of Kyoto University. The workshop will offer a broad introduction to the classification, handling, and reading of medieval Japanese works, from documents to scrolls and books. Participants will learn about the production, categorization, handling, and uses of such materials, and a close analysis of a variety of different works, including handwritten documents, sutras, and shōgyō 聖教. What did the early medieval Japanese monarch eat at banquets and his daily meals? How was the food prepared and served? Professor Akemi Banse of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute will examine these questions in a document-reading workshop focusing on courtier diaries between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The workshop will take place from 3-5 PM on March 26 in room 110C of the East Asian Library (Doheny Library), University of Southern California. For details, please contact Dr. S. An exhibit on Alice in the Japanese Imagination is now on display in the Doheny Memorial Library lobby. The exhibit uses items from the Cassady Lewis Carroll Collection at USC Libraries to highlight ways in which Japanese writers and artists have engaged with Alice and the Carollian universe—from its first translation into Japanese in 1899 to contemporary artwork in Tokyo. Come by and take a look!
On Monday, March 18th, from 5-6 PM, members of the Chado Urasenke Tankokai from Japan will present a demonstration of Chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) at the Fishbowl Chapel, University Religious Center. You won't want to miss it!

TOMODACHI Daiwa House Student Leadership Conference
An exciting opportunity for students to participate in the 2018 TOMODACHI Daiwa House Student Leadership Conference VI held in Los Angeles, CA, April 5th-8th. This conference is part of a multi-year series of regional conferences around the U.S. that seek to connect like-minded students with peers within a geographic region, across institutions who are interested in U.S.-Japan relations (broadly defined). The theme of the conference is “U.S.-Japan Business and Community Partnerships: Practical Insights for Tomorrow’s Global Leaders.” We are looking for enthusiastic undergraduate/graduate students who have interests in U.S.-Japan relations, the interplay of Japanese and American culture, and/or want to meet peers with similar interests. It is an opportunity for leadership training and networking, to learn about Japanese and Japanese-American contributions on a national level, and to think about ways they, as students, might contribute to strengthening the U.S.-Japan relationship in the present and future. There is no cost to students to participate! Transportation to and from the conference, as well as food and accommodations will be provided to all students free of charge. Attached is our recruitment packet, with an invitation letter from our President, Irene Hirano Inouye, a flyer about the conference (both in English and Japanese) to share with students on your campus, as well as information about the application materials and process.
