“Heh.“ Gast looked down briefly. She seemed warmer than usual, and he was getting the feeling that he did, too.
Her smile was very nice…
"A shame, yes, but not something we should mourn about. There’s too much to lose…” He took another drink, as if to get himself to just say it, “…without getting caught up in those kinds of friendships.”
Something tasted sour suddenly. Had he said something wrong? Gast took another sip. The edges of his mind were numbing, but he didn’t feel terrible.
And it didn’t really matter, what he was saying was hard to argue with.
At least, he thought so.
"Yes, I suppose that’s true,” Mariam murmured, looking back down. Warmer… Yes, she felt that way too. And she had been so tired of being ignored, now that it seemed as though he was paying attention to her….It was a great feeling.
“We’ve both lost people. Friends and family.”
… Was it her or did it seem as though he’d changed? This Gast was not like the one that she met back in the war, at least not tonight. She liked it.
Hm. She actually seemed to...be agreeing with him...
Gast looked at Mariam for a moment, then said, "Even the ones you love, they turn on you, in their way. Heheh..."
He actually kind of liked this wine. He took another drink.
"Not worth it... Not that many people in your life, you know?" He could live with Sarah... He could live with...something simple. Something to hold onto...
Not that he'd been able to hold onto anything, even if he'd wanted to. Gast took another large gulp, finishing off his wine and the last shred of common sense he had in him.

Mariam continued with a sip of her own drink, smirking. She was beginning to loosen up, just a bit, so that she had an actual expression on her face. “Yes, I know the truth very well.”
When he said that, however, she wasn’t entirely sure what to say. When it came to the two of them, she thought that she knew where he stood. “Is that so?” Another sip.
She smiled a little more. “The war is where we made all our friends. I guess. It’s just a shame that some of them were on the opposite side.”

Gast’s pause may have been a tad too long.
“Interesting,” he muttered, “you seem happy to…leave some things in your past, yes?”
Leave hi– them in her past. Gast took a bit of a long slug of his drink and sat it down easily. He didn’t really mind, of course…
Something about her though… Her voice, her mannerisms, something about them made everything feel different.
He wasn’t sure if he liked this or not.
Don’t think she didn’t notice.
“I am no longer the kind of woman who fights on a battlefield…but that doesn’t mean I left everything behind.” She shrugged. “I simply grew up.” Grew out of her foolish crush on him…grew out of expecting him to someday notice the young woman she had just turned into in those days.
Ah, how silly she was back then.
She called for her own drink and smiled. “And you? You seem to be about the same as you were the last time we saw each other.” …In fact…almost exactly the same. He didn’t look a day older.
Gast smiled back and took another sip of his drink. He already felt a bit warm, though it wasn't strong.
"I would say I'm happy this way, but you know the truth," he said. "I couldn't be happier without her."
Something about the way she'd looked at him made him add, maybe with a hint of bitterness, "I couldn't complain about the company I had, though."
He didn't mean those boneheaded soldiers or idiotic mercenaries, of course. He gave her a cool glance so she would know who he was referring to. Of course he'd never change himself for her, or anyone, but... It had been nice, their conversations.

This was so…grating…
Gast was seated in the bar, head lowered in a look practiced well. He seemed uninterested, not lacking in confidence or submissive like a dog to the chatter around him, just not open.
Excepting one person, right now.
Gast's gaze lifted from his barely-touched drink to settle on her when he caught sight of her long, silver hair. Something in him tightened, a feeling he wasn’t used to. He grimaced slightly, but then relaxed and smiled just as slightly at her.
“You’ve been well, haven’t you?”
He was always so…aloof.
Mariam went to sit down next to him, noticing when he grimaced and tensed up as she got near. She didn’t mind, but…she was not in the best mood now as a result of her visit with Leonhart.
He was also still obsessed with Anne, stupid man.
She sat down and then looked back over at Gast. Now he smiled at her, so she smiled back. “For the most part, yes. I’ve been busy working in the palace so much, these days.”
Gast's pause may have been a tad too long.
"Interesting," he muttered, "you seem happy to...leave some things in your past, yes?"

“Oh,” he said, smiling, “how lovely. Of course.”
Nevermind that he tried not to drink and that he hadn’t planned for that. He still could appear sociable.
Never would he allow himself to think that he missed her… Or that he wanted to see her again.
“Can you meet me at the tavern in three hours?”
He would be finished with his bonehead mercenary by then. The boy had gotten himself in trouble with a woman, and was looking for an escape from town, which Gast was reluctant to assist with.
And a drink at the tavern would go nowhere…
Because really, she was no good for him. He didn’t need that.
She nodded at him, watching the mercenary carefully. There were times when they were enemies and there were times when they were friends. It seemed that this time was the latter, but he seemed on edge all the same.
But Mariam smiled, finally. “Thee hours, yes. I should be done by then.”
Done with her errand, which was actually to check up on Leonhart. It would be a little weird to go visit him and then have a drink with Gast–at least, that was how she felt. But it would be fine, surely.
It was Gast. He was probably going to end up rambling about his sister again.
This was so...grating...

That was… Gast understood the surprise, but he didn’t really know what to think of it, whether he liked it or not. He’d tried to be aloof to her sometimes, perhaps, but those words felt…
“I never meant to give you that impression,” he said. He was, though, lying. “But I still enjoy people’s company.”
Again, lying.
Mariam gazed at him with some surprise. Was that really so? He was so cold and aloof as ever, something like how she acted, but he hadn’t meant to give her that impression?
She wanted to scoff.
“If that’s so, we could catch up over a drink sometime. …I have an important thing to do, but afterwards…”
“But Lady—” Mariam held a hand up to quiet Chartette.
“Oh,” he said, smiling, “how lovely. Of course.”
Nevermind that he tried not to drink and that he hadn’t planned for that. He still could appear sociable.

“Don’t mind me,” Gast said quickly, beginning to look away. “I’ve nothing to add to a conversation.”
She had something to do, and it was probably more important than him. He sighed internally, but wouldn’t dwell on it.
“I just…” He paused. Again. “I just wanted to make sure you hadn’t forgotten me.”
Calmly, Gast smiled, as though nothing here mattered.
Chartette did mind him, at least a little bit. She was too panicked by her current predicament. “Lady Mariam, I–!”
Mariam raised a hand. “Chartette, please. And I still have to meet with Leonhart. Can’t you have Ney deal with this?”
As Chartette flailed, Mariam nodded over at Gast. “Forgotten you? Nothing of the sort. I am surprised that you’re back here talking to me, actually.”

“…” Gast looked up at the girl and didn’t recognize her.
Good. It was nice to know that she–
“And who are you?” he asked of the girl, not relishing an answer but preparing for one nonetheless.
Mariam had already switched gears when Chartette ran to her as though in a panic, holding her skirts up so she wouldn’t trip.
“H–haaaaah, Chartette! But! Lady Mariam, I made a mistake! A big big mistake!”
Mariam pressed a hand to her face as if to hide her tired expression. “Can this wait…?” She glanced at Gast. “I’m in the middle of something.”
"Don't mind me," Gast said quickly, beginning to look away. "I've nothing to add to a conversation."

Of course. Them.
If she was going to lecture him on not controlling his men, he didn’t want to hear it.
“They’re not particularly cooperative.” He shrugged. “But I’m not…”
He walked a bit closer to her and lowered his voice.
“…I’m not very interested in their… Most common exploits, if you’re concerned.”
She wasn’t the type to lecture someone not already under her. Mariam didn’t care for how those men were abusing the populace, but perhaps he had some kind of reason for following them. Perhaps….
“I see.”
She shook her head, keeping her hands folded. “I am not concerned about such a thing, no. That didn’t seem to interest you when we last met.”
When they last met….
A twin-tailed girl with red hair was running through the market towards them, “Lady Mariam!!”
"..." Gast looked up at the girl and didn't recognize her.
Good. It was nice to know that she--
"And who are you?" he asked of the girl, not relishing an answer but preparing for one nonetheless.

Shit. Kill him now, all to make people stop staring.
“Mr. Venom"… It felt cold, and she looked it, but he brushed that aside. How could he care? He didn’t care.
“I just haven’t seen you in a long time,” Gast said, easily enough, or so he hoped. “It’s always nice to see an old… Friend.”
Damn that pause– he had to look and sound relaxed as always. As though nothing, not even her, could bother him.
She won’t even raise her eyebrows as she stares at him, holding her hands in front of her primly as always. Yes, she was using a more formal address–after all, it had been years since they parted ways, back when she was a different woman.
When he said “friend,” though… “Yes, I suppose it is.” Her face tilted a little. “You’ve been up to a lot these days with your…men, is that so?”
Of course. Them.
If she was going to lecture him on not controlling his men, he didn't want to hear it.

Gast was nothing if not poised, but here, for a fraction of a second, he gaped a bit at her. Then, since she’d noticed him, he supposed he had to make this look intentional.
He smiled and waved, internally panicking. The onlookers could go shove their heads in a windmill, though…
Well, he was waving? Did he wish to speak with her? Is that why he was giving her such a look? For whatever the reason, Mariam began to walk over to him with the same cold stare as usual.
“Yes, Mr. Venom? Is there something you wanted?”
Shit. Kill him now, all to make people stop staring.

It was time to go for basic shopping, and Gast wasn’t particularly enjoying being out in broad daylight.
He looked up to hear the ear-shattering bell that struck one o'clock when he saw… Someone. Someone very familiar.
Mariam…
A knot in his stomach twisted tightly, and he swallowed: What should he do? What did he want to do…?
And he may have been looking at Mariam for too long, at least for someone as perceptive as her.
It wasn’t often that she went outside of the palace. In truth, she was off to visit Leonhart on a personal matter, and was only passing by the market on her way to the neighborhood districts.
But she stopped when she noticed the gaze on her from the corner of her eye. She was used to being watched, as one of the Three Heroes, but this was a more intense gaze than anyone else had given her today.
She spun around, and then had to suppress her surprise. “Oh–!” So he was here, today…
Gast was nothing if not poised, but here, for a fraction of a second, he gaped a bit at her. Then, since she'd noticed him, he supposed he had to make this look intentional.

Gast was a composed, fast-witted, and poised man, but at that, his mouth gaped just a bit.
“…No. No. It…” He closed his mouth and a more composed look came about his face.
“I was there at the beginning of this year– it couldn’t have. So I suggest you not play tricks here.”
The marchioness stared at the man with curiosity before giggling and answering to his words. She was sure who was joking was the other, since that building was burnt down by soldiers very long ago, in the Green Hunting events.
“Hehehe… You say funny things. I think you’re the one trying to prank me, since that mansion you’re talking about was burned down around one hundred years ago.”
“It was absolutely not.” He looked at her incredulously. “I’m definitely not over a hundred years old, and I’d like to see proof of that before I spread word that the noblewoman here is one for games.”
Games he played well, but was not fond of.
