Just a friendly reminder that Commissions are open, and that prices have changed!

I've updated the sheet a little with the new (lower) prices, and switched out one of the example images. I do draw something other than pokemon, folks! I've included this full reference sheet of Ilaurenda, my Hobbit Fanfiction Dragon character as an example of what else I can do! Now, something like Ilaurenda in her full-scaled image would cost more than typical, due to the detail, of course (That sheet took 8 hours!). A reference sheet is perfectly within reason to commission, and I'd be happy to work out a price with you for all the things you want included!

While I’m not a name in the reptile community at all, I follow many who are, and this discussion drew my interest. I went and did a little hunting on my own for some proof of sand impaction, and found some - at least for Calci-sand.

This forum thread is particularly long, but the first page is all that you really need. There are a few blue quotations posted by the user Sunrose, quoting another forum’s user, that provide scientific proof for Calci-sand being indigestible, therefore at risk of causing impaction when ingested. I was going to hunt down other sources as well, but I think this one is sufficient to prove the point for Calci-sand at the least. It doesn’t speak for all sand varieties, though, but several forum members post throughout the thread pages that the only sand that isn’t a high risk is fine-grain, sifted, playsand.

As my own notes, I do not see the need for the use of any Sand, mixed with soil or otherwise, for any reptile unless it is intended as a burrowing substrate and is thus deep enough to do so with room to spare. I’ve heard of sand mixed with soil used for such a purpose, but only rarely, and only for that purpose, and not because the alternative was causing dehydration or liver damage. If the owner is taking care of the reptile properly, there isn’t, for at least dehydration, a risk at all. I’m uninformed about liver damage so I won’t pretend to know about it. But for the dehydration topic - a proper keeper would be keeping their dragon amply hydrated via soaks and maybe a light misting so he can lap at the droplets that land on him.

I’ve seen way too many gruesome ‘sand impaction’ x-rays and pictures of blocked cloacas for my liking. The sand had to get there somehow, after all.

Well thank you for actually trying to use science rather than a breeder once told me and also 100 caresheets and 10000 horror stories but I still don’t see how the science there proves anything other than digestibility and that calcium sand is toxic in large doses.

The fact is digestibility means nothing, if everything that went into an animals mouth was digestible then we’d not need a way to excrete because poo is in fact indigestible matter. Ofcourse in literally huge quantities it will cause impaction but eating substrate in that amount is an abnormal behaviour which means you’re doing something seriously wrong long term to cause it. In small quantities it will just be passed with the rest of its food with no problems what so ever. The only time impaction happens is long term abuse where the digestive tract is compromised so by low heat, dehydration and low muscle condition.

Basically that means as long as you’re providing everything else right then it doesn’t matter if you’re using sand or tile either way you’ll have a healthy dragon which means it’s personal preference and gives no ground for all these people harassing people for having the personal opinion that sand is ok just like I don’t like pure sand or tile, that’s my opinion but I do not charge around tumblr commenting on pictures telling people they’re wrong and abusive…

Also regarding baths, it’s an awful way to keep an animal hydrated because it’s not self regulatory meaning it relies on the owner to know when the animal needs water and you just can’t do that. Not to mention bathing can cause stress and even cools the animal right down making digestion harder, especially if on a regular basis.

You said you’d not use the mix but why? You didn’t give reasoning at all.

I don't condone people harassing others. I rather dislike it, in any form no matter who is at the receiving end. The people who make it their lives to commenting on reptile owner's pictures of their reptiles on sand shouldn't do so. If they happen across the image then I think it is fine and well for them to give a polite advisory message, but forcing an opinion on another is wrong. Which is partly why I wanted to make my thoughts on the matter known.

As for baths keeping an animal hydrated, if you'll remember that wasn't my only option for keeping the animal hydrated, nor did I state it had to be the primary one.

I never blatantly said i wouldn't use the mix. I said I don't see a need for it except in a very specific circumstance, that circumstance being that the animal is a burrower and the substrate is deep enough in the first place for the animal to properly burrow.

From what I have read, impaction can happen to even a healthy animal within its normal parameters of health. No I do not have proof on that statement.

Call for Auditions!

Hey guys! I bet you're getting tired of seeing these, huh? Well if you want them to stop you're gonna have to fill in these roles that we need! :P At this moment in time we find ourselves in need of a few specific things. We need an Environmental Artist, first off. Then a pair of general artists, a writer, and an admin or two still. Let's start with the Administrative positions! For Administrators, we are looking for sturdy folk who are not afraid of getting their hands dirty if necessary, figuratively speaking. Administrators will need to have thick skin for dealing with not only the stickier members of the group that Moderators are unable to settle down, but Moderators themselves when the situation calls for it. You'll have the assistance of other Admins and the Founder, but you may have to deal with a situation alone. Other duties will include artistic / written responsibilities, helping the group with concepts and discussions, and when the group opens you will also find yourself making journals, editing content and galleries, and anything else that the we don't have the Mods already doing. The Writer is something of a self-explanatory position, but I will try and outline what we expect nonetheless. The writer will help us by creating character concepts and backgrounds, as well as fleshing out the story arcs. They will help us create Task / Errand / Mission journals, and any story pieces we create. Some coding experience would be awesome, but is not necessary. The general artists we are looking for we would like to have skills in a few fields. We are currently fine in NPC creation, but would like some help with other things like item designing and comic creation if at all possible. Other general skills would be greatly appreciated. Finally, the environment artist we are looking for is very specific. We are looking for someone with talents in creating backgrounds - someone who can draw scenes. Cities, dungeons, world scenes, etc. Letmis and Valkyryn currently have something worked out, but assistance would be amazing. Thank you for the consideration, and we hope to hear from you! Their foraging hadn't proved very fruitful today, Shayiss thought glumly. The girls had set to it with a will - but they still were inexperienced wilderness adventurers. He was no adventurer either, but he at least was a creature of magic. They were soft little things, not made for shucking it out in the forests. But they had wanted to explore the world - and it was his duty to protect them, as the line's guardian. He was created to protect them, after all. Sure, he wasn't exactly what the Mages had in mind when they had set about making a guardian for the line, but he had proven useful when the girls had decided to run away. He wasn't about to let them rough it out alone. The king and queen would have stripped his hide! They still would, for letting the girls convince him to go, but that was besides the point.

He sighed wistfully as he longed for the juicy dragonfruits of the orchards in the magic floating kingdom of Shay - the kingdom he was named after. Dragonfruits and meat were his favorite. Both of which were severely lacking as of late, as he was a poor hunter, lugging around two elven princesses the majority of the time. His senses were keen enough - but he lacked the time to practice due to the girls. Not that he blamed them, of course. But he desperately longed for something more flavorful than bread, and whatever vegetables and other fruits they managed to gather. He was an omnivore, but he was more carnivorous than frugivorous or herbivorous, pardoning the odd Dragonfruit.

He currently lay next to the small fire they had going - it wasn't quite night yet, just on the cusp of dusk, but a chill had already fallen and the girls were probably grateful for the warmth of the flames. He was a bit more warm blooded thanks to the fact he was a creature of magic, but that didn't help his charges. He mantled his wings, then stretched then upwards, the bones creaking from lack of use. They mainly walked. He didn't get to fly very often anymore. Technically he could retract his wings completely thanks to his magic, thus eliminating the aching feeling, but he was fond of the weight they had on his shoulders, so he kept them out most of the time.

Nikki and Zarae - those were the girls' names. Nikki being the younger by several decades. Nikki was short for Nikkisha, but she hated the long form for some reason. 'Nikki' sounded dreadfully human, but Shayiss grudgingly obliged to call her that because she would give him this awful puppy eyed look if he didn't. Zarae was much more reasonable, if he had to pick between the two of them.

Currently, both girls were busy cutting some vegetables to throw into a stew for a very late dinner. Vegetable stew was growing very dull in his mind. But food was food. He had his own task at the moment - using his rather dextrous paw he was scribbling away at a scroll. He was very intent at this task, as it was very important to him. He didn't write very often, so tonight was special. He was writing down a spell he had thought of earlier that day, that he needed to tweak before it would be functional.

With a final flourish of the quill, he nodded in satisfaction and blew on the ink so it would dry. It dried quickly enough, and he rolled the scroll up and tied it up with a bit of string, tucking it away in one of the girls' packs.

Now there was nothing to do but wait for the stew.

Do not Roleplay with this Person

I have a veritable fountain of patience within me, when it comes to certain things. However, my patience has been tried tonight. atan-pmdteams is an insufferable, impatient, lackluster individual who is unwilling to put forth the effort required to get what he wants beyond a trifle. He will do anything to try and get his way if it involves a roleplay or porn though.

After refusing to roleplay an original character named Shayiss with him, on the grounds that he had no original character of his own, he presented to me the mention of a Griffon. Didn't inform me of the Griffon's name, but said it had one. But nothing else. And proceeded to try and coerce me into a roleplay that I had already blatantly expressed I wasn't interested in if the character was not original. Original is not a Griffon with a name and nothing else. That's nothing! Nothing! No world, no story, no attachments either from the character to another character or from the character to the creator!

This stemmed a vigorous arguement about originality, and how he wanted to roleplay to get his creative juices flowing again, because he missed that particular feeling within himself. I expressed that I was not some outlet to create a world with, at one point. I accused him of not wanting to create anything original before there was the prospect of a roleplay, and he blatantly admitted, "No". I then later told him that world building would not come to him on a silver platter.

"But I'm not asking for it to come on a silver platter. I'm asking for some help in working hard at it" he says.

He then expressed that he wanted to snap at me because I sounded like every other adult who never understood him. The following are direct quotes from our conversation, some with time stamps.

"Atan. I used that phrase for a reason. [8:44:40 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: You're not toiling day in and day out, struggling to make worlds and stories and breaking your back to thread them together in any way you can. [8:44:50 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: You're goofing off messing around with pokemon. [8:45:27 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: If you want to be taken seriously for your roleplay ability for original characters then you need to step it up and take an actual step."

"But how can I create originality when all I can do is write? Writing nowadays can not be original cause everything has said everything. It's like the Simpsons!" he says.

"Bullshit I call Bullshit on everything you just said Writing is THE way to create, Atan! There is no Story without the written word! [8:55:10 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: Atan. Written word is original if you make it so. You are making yourself your own worst barrier. And if you won't accept that, then there is nothing on this earth you can do to become an Original Writer, and I can do nothing to help you.

Atan: "But I can become one, I just need to get back into that old flow I used to have. I can't get myself to feel inspired to create without using a base 1st. That's why I want to Roleplay with more original characters, not original design wise but original in story"

[8:57:14 PM] Atan: These characters were made in games yes, but I gave them all names and stories that never came from the games [8:57:45 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: There's nothing I can do to help you, Atan. You won't accept that you have made yourself your own blockade. [8:59:03 PM] Atan: Why is it that if the character was made in a game it's not original? Does the story I make for them count for nothing? [8:58:36 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: Because they are not YOURS! The concept behind them is not YOURS! That species is not YOURS! That game is not YOURS!" Atan: "So a Dragon is yours then? Shayiss is some kind of Dragon, no?" [8:59:30 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: Dragons are a mythological creature that no one knows the origination of. [8:59:40 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: His species is original. Atan: "You said that if it's not made by you it's not original, that is the jist of what you said" [9:01:48 PM] Atan: Dragons were not made by you, regardless of them being mythical [9:02:07 PM] Blythe Evelyn Varner: Shayiss is a Mage Born creature who is called DRAGON for the sake of Simplicity! There is no MOTHER TONGUE that can call him by what he is!

This is where I was too infuriated by him, and cut him off completely, removing him from my contacts on skype. How dare he try to undermine a character that I have invested Six years of my life into! That is cruel no matter how you look at it! Atan cannot come up with an idea without taking from someone else first. He blatantly admitted it. I tried to help him, and he refused it.

This individual is not worth your time. Do not waste your precious ideas on him! Please spread this around, for other Roleplayers' sakes.

I don't really know you and only happened to stumble upon you coming out, but for all it's worth, I support you. Figuring out who or what you identify as is difficult, accepting it even more so, and sharing it with the world... takes a lot of bravery. I'm glad you settled on an identity, albeit through some harsh times, and I sincerely hope it works out for you. And if anyone gives you shit- then that's too bad for them.
