So I’m gonna pull a 180 and just…
Can we all take a moment to appreciate how badly written orv is? Granted I’ve only reached the 5% mark, but that’s well over 200 pages divided into 40+ chapters and there just aren’t any personal stakes for the characters. Sure, they have to do shit to survive, but where’s the internal conflict?
I’m still gonna read it because the concept is cool and I’m getting enjoyment out of it but I have literally no reason whatsoever to care for any of the characters in this book. At all.
If this writing issue isn’t resolved by the 10% mark my reading speed is likely to significantly drop… because there just isn’t anything there to keep the reader’s attention.
At this point I’m still just reading to find out what the hype is about, and I get it in the sense that I also get why people like contemporary action films, but where’s the substance? Why should I care for potentially Earth-shattering moments in future chapters if I don’t care about the people it’s happening to?
The concept is cool and I will continue to read because I think the characters might come to life (no pun intended) more in future arcs and THE CONCEPT IS FUCKING COOL! I’m just ever so slightly disappointed by the execution…
All of this is my personal opinion (although I do think the writing is objectively bad) (and objectively bad art isn’t an inherently bad thing) (we need bad to define good) (also it’s good for artists to get their art out into the world, if no-one dared to publish because they were afraid their work wasn’t good enough we’d have no books).
I’m not saying I don’t like orv, as I said I really appreciate the concept. I just think it’s good practice to critically analyse and form opinions on the art we consume…
I also want to stress that this is criticism of the work itself, not the people who enjoy it,
Thank you for listening to my ted talk.
