From Delivery Boy To Chairman
(An unimaginable love story)
By Vaman Acharya
Naveen, a part time delivery boy at Soubhagya multi cuisine hotel in Pavanpur, a famous tourist centre. Despite his hardwork, he was paid meagre, significantly less than what was agreed upon. Navin's financial struggles had become a constant worry.
Hotel owner Mahesh Babu's daughter, Sunayana, moved by Navin's dedication and hardship, decided to investigate further. She discovered that her father had indeed underpaid Navin, despite the cafe's booming business.
Next day, she met Navin.
“Don't you think, injustice done to you in payment of salary?”
“Yes Madam, every time, when I ask for more salary from the boss, he used to tell me to wait for six months. I strongly believe in patience and optimism that good days will certainly come.”
“Your duty in the hotel starts at 7 pm and goes home at 11pm. What are you doing in the daytime?
“Madam, I am going to Someshwar college of commerce, studying for my final year bachelor of commerce.”
“Navin, I am impressed to know that you are studying for your final year Bachelor of commerce. How are you managing your study and your duty in the hotel? I am deeply moved by your work. I'm also impressed by your dedication to your studies. I want to help you out and convince my father.”
Navin, touched by her kindness.
Determined to rectify the situation, Sunayana approached her father, when he was in a jolly mood.
“Appaji, Navin has been working tirelessly for us, and we've been unfair to him. We must do justice for him.”
Mahesh Babu, initially defensive, eventually acknowledged his mistake. “You're right, Sunayana. I got caught up in profits and forgot our values. Let's pay Navin's dues.”
“Appaji, one more thing.”
“Tell me.”
“He is a brilliant student studying in final year B. Com. Please help him to continue his studies.”
“Sunayana, I didn't know Navin was studying. Help him whatever you want.”
“Thank you Appaji”
Sunayana calculated the underpaid amount and paid him. She also took interest in providing him substantial benefits.
Navin was overwhelmed and said,
“Madam, I don't have words to express thanks.”
“It's my duty to help sincere and hard workers like you.”
Why did Sunayana take a special interest in Navin?
Whether Sunayana fell in love with Navin
The next day, Sunayana visited Navin's small one room house in a dilapidated condition. She was moved by the simplicity and poverty that surrounded Navin”s life. Sunayana,a kind-hearted girl, decided to assist him financially
“Navin, consider me your friend,”
she said.
He was surprised and happy to see the kindness of Sunayana towards him.
With their support, Navin completed B.Com in first class and never forgot the kindness Sunayana and Mahesh Babu showed him. His presentation on ‘How to become a successful entrepreneur,’ was appreciated by the college committee. Arunodaya Food Processing Enterprises has offered him a position. He will never forget the kindness Sunayana and her family showed him and seek her advice before joining any company.
Mahesh Babu, a wealthy businessman, owed Navin, a humble delivery boy for three years.
He was stunned by his daughter's actions and realised too late that his selfishness cost his daughter's love and respect.
One day, Mahesh Babu called Navin to his office and apologised.
Navin said with due respect,
“Sir, every delay can be a divine delay, leading to a greater purpose and brighter future.”
Mahesh Babu praised his knowledge. Sunayana was present and requested Navin to join their hotel not as a delivery boy, but as a general manager. Everyone present there laughed to hear the joke. Navin and Sunayana also joined them in laughing. He gladly accepted the new assignment and expressed gratitude.
One year passed, and Mahesh Babu's health began to decline due to advanced age. His eyes twinkled as he shared his ambitions with Sunayana and Navin.
“ My dear Sunayana and Navin, I have three wishes. First, I want to hand over the hotel business to Sunayana, being my daughter and legal heir. Second, I want you, Navin, to be my son-in-law. Navin has proved an exceptional and better life partner for Sunayana. Third, I want both to manage the hotel and take the business to new heights.”
Sunayana and Navin exchanged garlands with clappings. Their hearts overflowed with emotions.
“Appaji, your blessings and wishes certainly guide us to lead a happy life,” Sunayana said with full of emotions.
“We'll make you proud sir,” said Navin.
Mahesh Babu's face lit up with joy.
“I know, you two are meant to be together.”
Navin - Sunayana wedding was a grand celebration with hotel staff, patrons and local dignitaries.
The couple worked hard transforming the cafe to new heights.

An Accidental Love Story
By A. Vamanacharya
Reading time is 4 minutes.
Mumbai bound fast express train arrived Raghavpur railway station at scheduled time 6 am. On that day, there was an unusual crowd of passengers getting down and boarding the same bogie. It was drizzling at that time. Passengers were feeling difficulty in moving. The train stops for just two minutes.
A young man named Krishna, a newspaper vendor, collected the bundle of newspapers. He helped the passengers, who were aged, disabled and kids.
He went near the exit door to sell the newspapers and magazines. He waited till all the passengers moved from the platform. During this short time he gets good business. To relax, he was about to sit on the bench and saw a beautiful young girl selling tea and snacks on a pushcart and returning back to the railway tea stall. Krishna ran fast and asked her for a cup of tea. Just half a cup of tea remained. She gave him tea with a smile and was impressed by his robust personality. He too was fascinated by her romantic mood. Her long curly black hair was uncombed, unoiled and the dress she wore was simple. Her smile charmed him. It was their accidental love at first sight. While sipping the tea, he starts to talk with her.
“Madam,I am happy that tasteful tea is served by a beautiful girl. I am enjoying both the taste of the tea and the beauty of a girl. May I know your lovely name?”
“My dad Tukaram, owner of a railway tea stall affectionately calls me ‘Jayyi’. My name is ‘Jayamala.’ I am happy that you have tasted the tea and fell in love with me. I am not as beautiful as you think and I am not rich enough to visit beauty parlours to look beautiful. You loved me and I too love you. But my dad is forcing me to marry Prabhu, who has been working with us for the last three years. I don't like Prabhu because he is ten years older than me and not keeping good health.”
“Jaya, I am Krishna. People affectionately call me ‘Kittu’. I am an orphan. You don't worry. I have not seen a beautiful girl like you in my life. Your smile adds to your beauty. Our hearts are pure and we both wholeheartedly loved each other. For me, you are the most beautiful girl in the whole world. What kind of attraction did you find in me? Can you tell me how old I am? asked Krishna.
“I like your attractive personality very much. You are quite healthy due to your hard work as a newspaper vendor. I think you may be twenty five years old. I hope your day starts at four am,” replied Jaya.
“Yes! You are very near to your guess. I am completing twenty three years on the 25th September. My day starts at five am.I have been doing this job for the last three years. I am also doing social service. Jaya, now I am in a hurry. I have to distribute newspapers in the town. Shall I take leave of you?” asked Krishna.
She was a school dropout and passed 4th grade in English medium. Krishna left the school when he was in 7th grade Kannada medium and improved his English language by regularly reading newspapers during his leisure time.
With a heavy heart she agreed and asked,
“Krishna, When are you meeting me?”
“ I will be here tomorrow at the same time.”
He didn't forget to pay the bill.
Krishna comes out to pick up his hero bicycle in the parking area and starts riding towards the town, keeping the bundle safely. He normally finishes the distribution of newspapers door to door, shop to shop in one hour. His customers were salaried class, housewives, students and businessmen. This was his daily routine without break. He was privately preparing for the SSLC examination. Being a newspaper vendor, he knew most of the high school teachers and requested them to spare some time for teaching. They reciprocated his request positively. One of the teachers appreciated him for ‘learning while earning’.
Jayamala didn't notice her dad overheard her conversation with a youngman. As soon as she entered tea stall Tukaram was angry and asked,
“Jayyi, who is that young man? Why did you love a stranger? You know, I have told you to marry Prabhu.”
“Dad, be calm. You know very well why I have rejected Prabhu? The youngman Krishna is a nice guy. He is a newspaper vendor working hard for long hours and best suited for me. Please bless us.”
Tukaram thought for a while seriously. His anger disappeared and said,
“My dear daughter, I wanted to test you. You got one hundred marks out of one hundred. It's good that you can continue education with him. Bring him here soon after you meet him tomorrow.”
Jaya was happy and expressed thanks to dad by prostration. The following day, Krishna came to the railway station at the same time.
Jaya was happy. On that day pushcart duty was entrusted to Prabhu.
Krishna took the newspaper bundle. He told Jaya to wait till all the passengers moved out. Thereafter, he went to meet Tukaram along with Jaya in the tea stall. Tukaram welcomed Krishna with a cup of tea. He was asked to sit on the chair ment for the owner and asked him a variety of questions and got good answers. Tukaram called Jaya and Krishna inside, where the photo of Lord Rama, Seeta, Lakshman and Hanuman was kept in the small puja room. Tukaram Lit the lamp and agarbatti. Jaya sings a devotional song, ‘Krishna nee begane baro.’ She had a melodious voice.
Krishna and Jaya exchange garlands.
Tukaram blessed them and said, “Jhat mangani pat shadi.”
Accidental Love
(A different love story)
by Vamanacharya
It was early morning at six am. The train was moving very fast and suddenly stopped just before the platform of Raghavpur station.
Apurva, a young woman from Delhi was visiting Raghavpur to see the tourist spots like hills, lake, bird sanctuary, tall trees and varieties of flowers. The train started to move after three minutes.
She got down in Raghavpur station. It was her first visit to the town. Apurva was aware that she didn’t know the local language Kannada and thought she could manage with Hindi and English. There was a big sign board 'Welcome to tourist centre Raghavpur' at the railway station. A booklet containing the information about the tourist spots was given to her.
Apurva had already booked a room through the internet in Hotel Nisarga International. The hotel owner Rama prasad Sharma warmly welcomed her.
"Madam, this young man is my son Prabhat. He is working as a manager and guide to tourist spots. You may take a rest and come back after one hour."
Apurva just smiled to see the grand personality and the style of the young man Prabhat speaking in English. She understands that Hotel Nisarga International became popular due to Prabhat, whose innovative ideas like guide to the tourists, arranging transportation, breakfast, lunch, dinner from his hotel and attracting the customers with novel gifts. People appreciate Prabhat for his efficient hotel management even though he was a school dropout.
Prabhat was ready at nine am with a bus full of tourists. Apurva was waiting for the bus. For every tourist, he charges on a package basis including tiffin, coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tourists had a feeling of homely sumptuous food. He was a singer and sung many popular film songs for the entertainment of the tourists. Guide service was free. Bus left towards spots well in time. Just after fifteen minutes the bus reached the tourist spots. Raghav Hills, Pavani Lake and Raghavpur bird sanctuary situated in one place. The birds were flying above the lake towards the sky with different voices. The tourists got down from the bus and viewed the natural scene. Tea and snacks were arranged. Prabhat starts explaining about the spots.
"This bird sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers and nature lovers. The area is spread over in 0.50 sq.meters . It's a nesting ground for about 150 species like painted stork, kingfishers, crane, cuckoo, dove, hawk, jay and hummingbird bird. Boating facilities provided to the tourists. The Pavani lake never dried up even in summer. The different varieties of flowers are lotus, jasmine, sunflower, daisy, tulip, magnolia and lavender. The tall trees have added natural beauty. Please do not enter the lake."
All the tourists had lunch under the shade of trees. The tourists were happy and enjoyed the beautiful nature.
By the time everything was over by four pm, suddenly, Apurva fell down due to giddiness and she was unconscious. Prabhat and others were in panic. Prabhat took her to Durga Multi-Speciality hospital, Raghavpur in the tourist bus with the help of lady tourists. All the tourists were upset and returned to the hotel.
The doctor examined her and started treatment immediately. She gained consciousness and felt better after half an hour and asked,
"Why am I here in the hospital?"
The doctor on duty said,
"Madam, you must be thankful to Prabhat, who brought you here immediately for treatment. If there was a delay, your life would have been under great risk."
She realised that after the long journey of twenty hours in the train, the rest for a day was essential.
She saw Prabhat standing beside the doctor. Apurva was emotional and her eyes sparkled with joy and overwhelmed with love. Noticing that, Prabhat approached her and shook hands with her lovingly.
She said, "I wanted a person like you, who comes into my life by accident and stays on purpose. I fell in love with you, accidently, unexpectedly and wholeheartedly."
Those present there were clapping hands continuously and wished the lovers a very happy life.
The surprising fact was that Apurva was MBA and awaiting an executive job in the reputed company, whereas Prabhat was a school dropout just managing a hotel in a small place.
MAYA AND THE PUZZLE- A SHORT STORY
MAYA AND THE PUZZLE
In a house by a narrow zigzag road where gulmohar trees grew in plenty, their orange flowers filling up the skies, there lived a little pretty girl named Maya.
After returning from school she would often sit by the window and watch birds feeding from Gulmohar flowers. The birds were many, and their colors delighted Maya, sometimes she would try to speak their language, imitating their melodious calls. She kept one bird feeder at the top of her house. She had developed a rare quality of love with birds.
Maya’s school was in a green corner of the little town. It was named as ‘green corner’ due to the presence of good number of trees with green leaves. Another specialty of these trees was the leaves retain the green throughout the year. Maya would get up early in the morning before sun rise to enjoy the company of birds. She knows that it was the time when all birds flew in search of food and return to their nests only in the evening. Often her mother had to scold her to eat her breakfast properly, but Maya would always be in a hurry to go to school. Whenever her class would plan any activity, Maya would raise her hand when the teacher would ask those who are interested to put their hands up. She always raises her hands up and participates in all the activities.
Whenever the teacher asked the students to suggest any good points to take up the activity planned Maya was first to suggest useful points in carrying out the activity. On one weekend her teacher had planned to go out with all the students of the class to visit a nearby small forest to enjoy the natural scenes. Maya had suggested her teacher to visit only during day time due to fear of wild animals. She thinks day time would be suitable teach on trees, birds, insects, animals, ponds etc. She told her teacher to hire a good vehicle with experienced driver for safe journey.
For their annual school gathering Maya’s classmates were busy planning on the dresses they would wear to the function. When Maya’s teacher had talked about staging the character as Tarzan the Ape-man and asked those who were interested in acting out Tarzan, to raise their hands, Maya’s hand had shot up even as her friends giggled at the thought of playing the ape-man.
Maya would raise her hand when the teacher would ask those who are interested to put their hands up. Maya had knowledge that Tarzan the Ape-man was filmed in the year 1932, 1959 and 1981.
Maya’s father thought many of her questions to be irrelevant and would get annoyed by them, especially when he would work from home with the help of his laptop. So, to get some time to complete his work in silence, he would call Maya to his side and give her puzzles to solve. Sometimes, she asks her dad to permit her to operate the system. He didn’t allow her to operate, because of official data stored in it.
So, one evening when her father returned home from the office, carrying his laptop in a bag with an intention work from home. Maya had a new set of questions which had been bothering her all afternoon and to which she did not have satisfactory answers.
“Daddy,” said Maya as he entered. It was nearing eight in the night and her father had another long day in the office. He was looking forward to hot dinner, a wink of sleep before tackling the workload he had carried home. It was an important project and he was entrusted with overseeing its completion.
He tired to smile as his daughter welcomed him with her customary joy. She was his only daughter and he looked forward to seeing her after a hard, long day in the office. His face lighted up as she reached up to put her hands around his neck, and he smiled. He bent down to place his laptop on the table and Maya clung to his neck.
“Daddy, I wanted to know something,” she said.
“Not now, Maya, let daddy freshen up and finish his work,” her father told her gently, knowing she would insist on first getting her question answered. He knew it would not stop at one question, and there would be many more. Proud that he was of his daughter for being so curious, but at times, with work on hand he had little time to play the teacher. Today was one such day.
“No, daddy. Tell me first and then your work,” she cajoled him.” Not now, Maya, I have lot of work to do. If I don’t do work how will I be able to buy you ice-creams?” he tried to convince her. But Maya would have none of it.
“I won’t eat ice-cream this week; I want you to listen to my question.”
“Ok. Ok. But only one question,” he relented.
“Only one question?” a delighted Maya said.
Her father braced for her question. Knowing Maya he knew that he could not take her question for granted. Maya had the knack of asking unusual questions. He had often been stumped by them.
“If camels live in the desert and they have humps to store food, why don’t other animals of the desert have humps like camels?”
He did not know this one.
“I will tell you afterwards,” he said.
“No, daddy, I want to know now.”
With work pressing and not enough time to look up book references, he tried to stall her, but she would not listen. Then he hit upon an idea.
“Ok, I will tell you. But, before that you have to solve a puzzle. If you get the answer correct, your question will be answered and you will get an ice-cream too,” he said with relish.
He knew her fondness for ice-creams and thought this would be irritable to her. The puzzle he had on his mind was not an easy one. He didn’t think it possible for her to answer it soon. That was his intention, for, in the time it would take her to solve it he could finish his work and spend time with her.
A confident Maya was open to the challenge. Visions of butter scotch and Vanila swam in her mind as she sat by his side waiting to hear the puzzle.
Her father was an avid reader of several magazines. His reading room was full of back issues of various magazines he subscribed to. Maya too had grown to like the colourful, glossy magazines and, often, she would sit in his lap and together they would read aloud to Maya’s mother preparing food inside. Now, seeing her eager face awaiting the puzzle, he picked up a magazine and turned centre pages over to the world map he had seen the other evening. Then he tore the entire page out and proceeded to further tear it up into three pieces. A stunned Maya watched the unfolding scene. She had never seen her father tear from any reading material. Today was turning to be different.
He mixed up the freshly torn three pieces of the world map and told her,
“This is a jigsaw puzzle. Now, arrage the pieces to get the whole map,” he said, smiling.
After a few minutes, just as her father was settling comfortably in his chair, and opened the concerned file in the system and feeding the required data with full concentration.
“Daddy, I have solved it,” Maya’s voice rang in excitement.
For a moment there was silence as Maya waved the completed jigsaw in her father’s direction? She was smiling. Then her father broke the silence.
“Did Mummy tell you?”
A frown appeared on Maya’s face.
“No, mummy did not tell me. She had stepped out to our neighbor’s house. Aunty had called her.
He looked at Maya, feeling guilty for doubting her ability. And a proud feeling swept over him and asked her how she solved it.
“Dad, I can reveal this only when I get vanilla.”
“That was neat,” he said, “So, you have grown smarter than your papa, huh?” he completed. His files sat by themselves on the table as he scooped her into his arms and did a jig, both of them laughing. Just then the door opened and Maya’s mother came in.
“Get ready,” he said to his wife, still smiling.
“Where are we going,” Maya’s mother asked, smiling, as she watched a happy father-daughter duo.
“It is Vanilla time,” he replied.
“And question time too,” added Maya.
After all, she did not intend to let her father off the hook.
“Sure, sweetie,” her father said, laughing. “Maybe if you had a hump you would have stored ice-cream in it,” he lovingly pinched her cheeks as he said it.
She went out with her parents to celebrate the vanilla time. Her father was driving the car and she was seated in the front beside her papa. Her mother was in the back seat. On the way her father asked, “Maya, how did you solve the puzzle?”
She replied, “In the beginning, I was upset and unable to make the map whole. I was about to accept my inability. I wanted to weep for not solving the puzzle. With frustration, I was just reversing the paper pieces number of times, an idea flashed to my mind. On the reverse of the paper pieces, there was an ad of a smiling baby on full page. It was an ad from Johnson & Johnson. I thought it was very simple to arrange the picture of baby. When I completed the process the world map was automatically ready on the other side. On the torn part of the reverse, I had pasted tapes neatly to keep the map intact.”
Her dad and mother were surprised to know the wonderful knowledge of their little daughter and could not speak for a while due to happiness.
The Momentary Emotions
"That was my favourite cup,"
Sumeet told his wife Suma with anger when the cup was slipped by her and broke into pieces.
The newly married couple had their first confrontation. The cup was recently purchased.
"I am sorry Sumeet. I will get you the best quality designer cup."
" You know, how I got this beautifully designed orange colour cup in the shop. There was a tussle between a few customers to buy the same cup. The owner tossed and I won. I am really disappointed now."
Sumeet realised afterwards that no purpose would be served for a momentary emotion.
Nayana Manohar
(A moral short story)
Translation of my Kannada story
ನಯನ ಮನೋಹರ
By Vamanacharya
Reading time just 5 minutes
Just a month back, Nayana and Manohar tied the knot and moved to their newly constructed house 'Chandira' in Maruthi layout, Pavanpur.
On Sunday at seven am, while sipping filter coffee, couples start romantic talks for a couple of minutes.
" Manohar, it's been a month since we got married, unable to take a trip on honeymoon. If you still delay, the charm would be lost. Let's go to Ooty the day after tomorrow and enjoy the vicinity of beautiful nature."
"Yes! My darling Nayana. I have already made all the arrangements. As you know, numerous problems are emerging in our Paramount Computer Sales and Service Business."
"Manohar, problems in business are bound to come. Find the solutions with your partners. Otherwise say goodbye to the firm and start a new business."
"Nayana, it's very easy to talk. But it's very difficult to take action. You know, some of them are peculiar problems, which can be solved with great difficulty."
Nayana knew those problems but preferred to keep silent.
"Forget about all the problems at this moment. Now we are in a happy time and talk only about love," said Nayana.
"Nayana, your happiness is my happiness."
Both were laughing and dancing remembering lovely moments just before and after the marriage. The main door was repeatedly knocking that irritated the young couple. At the same time Manohar received a message from an unknown person on his mobile.
"Meet me at your back door urgently. You need not worry about the door knockers. They are your known people. God will protect the good people like you."
The couple felt uneasiness from the persons, who were creating disturbance.
Whom to meet first?
An unknown person at the rear door or open the main door?
"Manohar, I will look at the guy through the small window of the rear door. Don't open the main door until I come back," Nayana said.
She peeped out of the window and saw an old bald headed man wearing bright white lungi, designer tea-shirt with colored glasses and had a tilak on his forehead. He was sitting on his two-wheeler and busy with mobile. Nayana could not control her laugh, as he was none other than her own uncle Mangalamurthy. She called him to come inside. He was in a hurry just raised his hand and left.
When she came back, she had a big shock. Manohar was in a heated argument with two of his business partners. She became angry at the presence of Shashikant, one of the partners. She went to the bedroom and lay on the bed. Tears were flowing from her eyes. She remembers the events that took place just six months before she got married.
After completing her B.Com, she joined service in Paramount Computer Sales and Service as accounts in charge. She was busy with office work and hardly got time to speak with the owners of the firm Manohar, Prakash and Shashikant.
One day in the evening, Sashikant accidently met Nayana in front of the Sujatha Medical Store near the Pavanpur Gandhi Circle. Both talked freely for a while about general topics without feeling as boss and subordinate. Sashiikanth fell in love with her. His problem was how to express his desire. After some time, he went to Nayana's house and met her uncle Mangalamurthy and expressed his desire boldly in the presence of Nayana. Murthy was delighted that the right time had come for his daughter's marriage. He said shubhasya shighram. Nayana felt uneasy and left. Mangalamurthy was surprised to observe her strange attitude. Shashikant left with a hope. When she returned back, uncle asked why she left abruptly? She replied without knowing the background of a person, is it wise to make a hurried decision? Mangalmurthy felt something fishy. He thought of collecting more information about Shashikant.
Nayana had already met another boss Manohar in and out of office. She was very much impressed by his simplicity, the way he behaves, and the kindness he brings. She thought Manohar was the right person to be her husband. One day she expressed her desire to Manohar. He was surprised to know her intention. He too was liking her and agreed to the relationship. Nayana succeeded in convincing her uncle.
Just after a week, uncle appreciated her for rejecting Shashikant and decided to marry Manohar. Nayana got married to Manohar on one auspicious day. Shashikant and Prakash had been invited. Shashikanth was too angry and avoided attending the marriage. He also decided to sever relationships with Manohar and the firm. But Prakash was friendly and attended the marriage. His efforts to set things right failed. All the three were childhood friends and completed BE during the same year.
She stopped recollecting the memories, when the main door was shut. Nayana came out and saw everybody left. She thought they might have gone to approach a lawyer for dissolution of the partnership firm, 'Paramount Computer Sales & Service. Nayana was upset, when Manohar didn't return home even after three hours. She was ready to file a complaint with the police, a black cat passed in her way. It was a bad omen. She sat for a while and prayed to God. Her complaint was duly registered by the police.
The firm was growing every year from the first year to the third year. Only due to Nayana, Shashikant withdrew his share from the firm and stopped talking with Manohar.
It was the talk of the town that Shashikant had an illicit relationship with a lady, who was a sweeper in his office. He has a six month old baby boy. The credit for leaking this love affairs goes to Mangalmurthy.
Paramount Computer & Service was continued by the existing partners.
Nobody knew where Shashikant had gone. The complaint with the police was withdrawn.
Shashikant, despite having illegal relationships with the sweeper tried to marry Nayana keeping the whole story secret. Manohar, a nice gentleman and Nayana, a simple and cute girl became husband and wife. Their relationship was on solid ground and lived together forever.
The moral of the story is that a man with dubious character always suffers; whereas a man with a pure heart leads a happy life.
Behind Every Unsuccessful Man,
There Are Two
(A short story by Vaman Acharya)
On 25th July 2005 at 6 pm, the wind was blowing at a violent speed with a ferocious sound followed by heavy rains and a thunderstorm in Keshavpur village. The normal life of the villagers was very difficult during that time. Tall trees, electric poles, and towers were blown over uprooted. The roofs of the weak houses were blown away. The entire village was in the dark due to power failure.
Anuj was thinking of nature’s violent effect on human life and the recent blow in his life. His personal blow was more severe than nature's outburst. The more violent the storm, the quicker it passes. He thought, in his life also like a violent storm, he would come out soon from the terrible blow. He realized that the blunders committed were avoided.
His multi-storied house "Anugraha" was safe except for some minor damages. He was sitting on one corner and his wife Anagha was sitting opposite him on the other corner. Just after the heavy rain had started, they were silent. It was evident from their seriousness that they were in trouble. Power was restored after one hour.
Five years back after completing his MBA and taking over the management of more than one-hundred-year-old family business enterprise, 'Perfect Garments', married Anagha in the same year. But after five years, he was terribly upset due to the heavy loss incurred in the business. Their serious conversation continued on three issues.
How the well established business was derailed?
How to set the things right?
Whom do you blame for the mess?
"Anagha, I have to accept my mistakes for the present crisis. It is nothing but my unsuccessful business venture."
"Anuj, simply accepting the mistakes will not serve the purpose. You have to apply your mind in the right direction and set the things right. The person responsible for this mess is already behind the bars. You must be optimistic and plan to regain your status."
"Is it possible Anagha?"
"Everything is possible provided you have dedication and determination."
The conversation was inconclusive.

Keshavpur is a big village on Bengaluru- Chennai national highway. The village is also connected with the railway. The place is best suited for setting up business establishments and small scale industries due to the proximity to rail, road, and availability of land at a cheap rate. The villagers speak both Kannada and Tamil.
One hundred years ago, Anuj's grand-father Madanagopal started a ready-made garments business in Keshavpur with just one sewing machine and two workers. Anuj's father Venkataramana took over the business from his father after 25 years and improved the business to 50 sewing machines and 50 workers. When Anuj took the business, he expanded the business. At the end of four years due to hard work, the business enterprise grew with 1000 sewing machines and 1000 workers. Due to the superior quality of the garment products, the enterprise got theISI mark as export quality material. This was possible after modernization and skilled workers.

Five years back, when Anuj's final year MBA results were announced, he was happy that he got a distinction. At the same time, he received the sad news that his father passed away. He immediately rushed to Keshavpur from Bengaluru and completed all the religious rites and took the management of the garment business)He was in the process of taking the business affairs, his brother-in-law Suresh, who had just passed B.Com approached him for a job. Anuj wanted a reliable person to assist him. He appointed Suresh as an in-charge of the accounts department. Anuj was able to get control of the entire working of the business enterprise in one month. After six months, he appreciated Suresh for his efficient work and quick understanding of the work entrusted to him. Anagha, the elder sister of Suresh expressed thanks to her husband.
"Anuj, do not show any favors to Suresh being a brother-in-law. Duty is first and relationships are next."
"Your brother is sincere, hardworking, and honest. He will be proved as an asset to my business."
The garment business was running smoothly with an increase in the profits year after year. Likewise, four years passed with an excellent increase in sales turnover compared to the previous year. At the end of the fourth year, the business enterprise starts exporting the garments to foreign countries like the USA and UK. The business enterprise converted into a private limited company with a brand new name as "Venkataramana Garments Private Limited" with the emblem of 'Namaste' and moto as 'service with love'.
All of a sudden, at the beginning of the fifth year the decline of business started. Anuj failed to notice the substantial fall in the business as he was away on a business tour to London. Anagha also accompanied him. The number of complaints from the customers was pouring. The consignment of goods containing garments was not received by the customers even after one month. Few cheques of huge amounts were honored by the bank signed by Suresh ignoring another signature of a company chairman. Though he was one of the authorised signatories, Anuj's signature was required. Anuj sued the bank and demanded the refund of the amount.
On getting all the information, he canceled the meetings with the customers in London and returned by the next available flight. Anagha was very much disappointed as she could not visit tourist spots.
Anuj and Anagha reached Keshavpur after 40 hours. The flight was delayed for two hours at Heathrow airport due to a takeoff problem. Anuj without wasting time went to the office and enquired about the concerned staff. But to his astonishment, Suresh was absconding. Nobody knew where he had gone. Anuj went to a local police station and lodged a complaint against Suresh.
Anuj and Anagha could not sleep the whole night for the unexpected development in their absence. He arranged an audit of the company's accounts by chartered accountants from Bengaluru. The auditors arrived at Keshavpur on the following day. The audit was over after a week. While going through the audit report, Anuj was terribly shocked. Suresh is one of the authorized signatories, siphoned off huge amounts from the bank. The bank did not suspect him, when a huge amount was withdrawn from the company's accounts. Anuj Sued the bank in court.
During the absence of Anuj, the production of garments was completely stopped for one reason or the other. The workers got their salary on the first of every month. The total loss was running in several lakhs of rupees. As a result of this, the company's office door locked, and the production of garments stopped indefinitely. The customers, who had already paid in advance, threatened to approach the court.
It was a fact that the contribution of Suresh towards the progress of the company was laudable. Anuj also appreciated Suresh on a number of occasions. But suddenly, Anuj's attitude changed during 5th year maybe because of the tremendous progress in the business. Arrogance developed in him. Arrogance is a creature. It does not have senses. It has only a sharp tongue and a pointing finger. Anuj insulted him several times before the workers, even for his silly mistakes. Anuj calls Suresh and fires him. Suresh fed up with the rude behavior of Anuj and decided to teach him a lesson. He was waiting for the right time to strike. Suresh knew very well that by indulging in such unlawful activity one day he would be behind the bars and lose respect, dignity in society. He succeeded in his attempt, when Anuj was abroad.
Behind every unsuccessful man, there are two. Suresh was one and another person was none other than Anuj himself. Anuj paid a heavy penalty for his arrogance and rude behavior.

Amusing Old Couple In The Park
(A Short story By Vaman Acharya)
"Aunty and uncle, why are you fighting? Is it a funny conversation?" asked a young walker.
"My dear young man, who said we are fighting? We always feel happy spending time in amusing conversation," replied the old man.
It was six in the evening. Walkers were busy making rounds in the Maruti park, Pavanpur. The other walkers joined with the old couple.
The old couple Vasu and Vimla after the walk relaxing on the bench enjoying the pleasant climate. The bench had a space for three persons. A small bag was kept only to prevent another person from occupying the seat. They were in conversation before the arrival of the young man.
"Vasu, I wonder how our next door boy Avinash got a job abroad being an undergraduate, whereas our daughter Vanita is BE (Computer Science) with distinction unable to get a job abroad,” asked Vimala.
"Darling, I don't like your habit of criticising others without knowing about him. Do you know his qualifications and nature of job abroad? Why do you compare him with our daughter?"
" Vasu, you always find fault with me without any reason. My friend Saroja told me about Avinash."
“You believed your friend. Such matters should be discussed only after knowing the real facts. If you think positively, you would not have asked me such a question. He might have special skill and ability to handle certain types of work. Qualification is different from the skill. We must wish him all the best for his future career."
“ Vasu, why do you take everything as a serious issue? If somebody revealed me about your nature at the time of marriage, I would have rejected you. Now I am repenting I did a great blunder in my life. I just raised the topic not with bad intentions. I too wish him best. Let us stop further argument. Because there is no point in continuing the argument. Let the people around us think whatever they want," said Vimala with a humour in her mind.
"Vimala, there is no point in raising the issues of the past. Once we become life partners, you have to manage for the remaining life."
" Vasu, let them think that old couples are enthusiastic and funny even at an advanced age."
They were arguing as if they were serious on the topic, which was irrelevant and useless. Some of the walkers observe the amusement of the old couple. Many walkers joined them. One of them a youngman told,
"I remember my parents, who fight daily for one reason or the other."
“Thank you Youngman. If you are unmarried keep quiet. We try to find fault with one of us and make it a topic for argument. In this unique game, there is no winner or loser. At the end we get happiness,” replied Vimala smilingly.
"Youngman, if you are married, ask your wife the secret of remaining a jolly forever. Do you know her role in life is most important? If you neglect her, you have to face the music like me," said Vasu smilingly.
" Uncle, is it your personal experience?" asked another walker.
"Yes, you are one hundred percent
right."
After cutting a few jokes, the old couple left the place by raising their hands towards the walkers.
All the walkers were clapping continuously till the old couples exit.
