After reading Attack on Titan! Junior High, somehow I can relate this event to the SnK universe.
Before meeting Eren, Erwin will do any means to find out more about titans, by any means including sacrificing his comrades and killing his own humanity.
Mike, Hange and Levi clearly supported him because they are sure that Erwin will be able to lead them to the answer.
I can relate that the scar on Erwin’s body (in AoTJH) represent his emotional scar in SnK for defying titans over the years.
Then after meeting Eren, he realizes that he has been way too ruthless in achieving his dream. Although he formed such a strong team with the veterans, the puzzle about titans was not even close to be solved.
As we can see starting from SnK chapter 62 onwards, he has been showing more remorse towards his past actions.
“Yes Eren, it seems I must change as well”
SnK Erwin slowly changed his way of doing in chapter 67, he told the soldier not to get to close to turkey titan otherwise they will get burned. Old!Erwin might have get someone to be tested whether they will be burned or not. Also, he shows remorse while discussing with Garrison squad that Olbd district will act as decoy for turkey titan.
In my opinion, Erwin is not getting weaker, but in fact he is stronger at heart. He is not afraid to show a glimpse of his true nature, he has been hiding inside his shell all this time and now he has developed himself to be true to himself and everyone.
His changed way of doing might be one of the key to save the SnK world, combined together with titan’s command on Eren, super warrior Levi & Mikasa, intelligence team Armin & Hanji and other amazing characters in SnK. Even those who already died were also part of the surviving character’s development so they can reach toward their goal, which is a life outside the wall.
So nobody would have died in vain, their life was meaningful to teach their successor what kind of world they are living in and they must find a way to solve the puzzle.
Also would like to say that Erwin does not hate Eren, in both universe, jn fact he value Eren’s existence. In chapter 50 page 21, when he almost got eaten by titan, he asked them to prioritize Eren and told them that he himself can be replaced. In chapter 67, when he saw Eren and Historia were alive and safe, he told Levi that he did a good job. He really appreciates of what the whole team has done under Levi’s command.
Anyway, it’s not like I try to convince EruRen or anything but I am quite sad with the shipping war and mischaracterization. Eren and Erwin are both amazing character but because of the shipping war, they were insulted by sheer of emotion from their protective fans. Even Mikasa, I used to not really like her but I think her development is amazing, if I have time to do another one I will make one for her and Petra.
