Levi’s Dialogue in chapter 106
There is this one particular panel, that resulted 2 different translations.
Transcript:
…らしいな rashiina... = Well.../So it seems/Seems like it そいつは souitsu ha = That person/They/That 笑える waraeru = Funny/Laugh/Laughable
@momtaku pointed out that the 2 versions came from 2 different sources:
Amazon:
Mangastream:
The difference is how the sentence is read. If we choose to read the entire panel in one straight sentence, it will sound as following:
…らしいな。そいつは笑える
Well... That is funny.
I guess that is how the Amazon translator viewed the dialogue.
However, it seems that Mangastream translator used different approach in the translation. As you can see, those 3 words are separated into 3 speech bubbles: My guesses are they translated each word that resulted as below:
…らしいな。そういつは、笑える
Seems like it... That person, would laugh.
The speech bubble for the part “そういつは Souitsu ha” is closer to Levi, make it appear that he stressed on that word alone.
However, this perspective depends on the viewer’s judgement. It would have been easier to understand if we know how he said out that word.
As for Chinese translation, they went with:
…好像是呢。這實在、很可笑。(source: x)
Seems like it. This is really funny.
If I translate just by this panel alone it would have been “Seems like it... That person, would laugh”. However, given the context of from the previous panel after Yelena informed that the titans ironically protected the Paradis island from Marley. The word “そいつ Souitsu”, can also be attributed to “That fact” instead of “That person”, as the word itself is not exclusively used to refer a person but also noun/things.
In conclusion, both translations are technically correct. Levi could have found the entire situation is laughable as the titans were apparently protecting them, or the fact that the titans were protecting them would have been laughable for that person. From my perspective, I can only be sure if Isayama/SNK publishing team clarifies the matters or if we can hear the intonation of Levi’s speech.
My personal opinion is the word “そいつ Souitsu” is too ambiguous for this panel. Given the flow of the dialogue, I would have gone with “Well...that fact made me laugh”. If Levi is referring to one specific person, I think that the appropriate choice of word would have been “あの人/あいつ Ano hito/Aitsu”. As “そいつ Souitsu” normally refer to "that person/that thing” within the vision range. “あの人/あいつ Ano hito/Aitsu” refer to “that person/that thing” far from your proximity, most probably outside the vision range.
I appreciate that this simple dialogue resulted 2 different translations, that give us the chance to think about it. It is good to remind ourselves that Japanese is not a language with direct expression. Many times translators need to refer back to the context. I don’t think either side was bias, it’s just they view the dialogue from different perspectives.
Hello, i' m new to the snk fandom and i wonder what the smartpass actually is, could you help me out?
Hi, smartpass is a portal for a mobile phone provider in Japan, AU. The SNK smartpass stories are limited only for the AU mobile provider user. There are 2 other big mobile providers in Japan (NTT Docomo & Softbank) but the users of this mobile are not accessible to Smartpass content.
Because of the privacy of the contents’ nature, they are very difficult to be obtained outside Japan. There was also a debate wihtin the SNK official team as well, wondering the reliability of the smartpass contents because despite the contents are reviewed by Isayama, not so many people can access to the story.
AU smartpass stories are not written by Isayama, they are written by SNK publisher team, they try their best to make the story & characterization close to original manga. Some of the stories are even publicly published once in a while. I read it once that they were considering to publish the smartpass stories into a printed publication, however as of now I’ve never heard further news about it.
That’s all what I can explain to you about AU Smartpass. For more info, you might want to refer to @leviskinnyjeans detailed explanations, HERE.
SNK Smartpass: Erwin Smith and Sasha Braus - A Scene While Taking Shelter from Rain Reprise
[translation: @yusenki | editing: twitter@braunsofsteel ]
Disclaimer: Please do not re-post the translation elsewhere without permission.
Note: This story was published on December 27, 2016 (x).
Raindrops fall from the sky and spin short tales. Today as well, there is a new tale made by the rain, about a small bond formed somewhere below the sky. After the revolution within the wall, Trost district became the front line for humanity’s counterattack. Today, cold rain has been falling since early afternoon.
Erwin, accompanied by his horse, is sheltering from the cold rain drops on a backstreet, under the eaves of an empty house. His body, exhausted by daily hard work, bears the cold...old as he is, he sighs.
“Huh? Commander, do you take shelter from the rain in such a place?”
The owner of the familiar voice appears from the alleyway beside him.
She is a soldier from the Survey Corps, under Levi’s squad, who helped carry through the revolution...her name is for sure, Sasha Braus.
(1/2) "You don’t do that to your allies. You don’t take stock of your value, then throw yourself to the wolves so that your friends will participate in a battle they don’t want. Forget whether or not the intelligence of the strategy warrants it; you don’t do that to people you recognize as equals" is it because Eren lacks the rank of commander that he is seen in the wrong for doing so? Erwin has done this more than once in the past. and to quote Armin "he sacrificed 100 lives to save thousands"
(2/2) while I agree the decision is morally questionable, I can’t help but feel like all of his comrades have a double standard for Eren and Erwin. Erwin didn’t give the new scout recruits a choice, but decided he and they were to die at the hands of the beast titan. However, it was essential for bringing them closer to victory. With Eren’s actions and the world already declaring war, I find his options were limited as well, and he followed Levi’s advice. “Choose what helps you sleep at night”.
That morally questionable bit would be the linchpin of the drama.
(But really the short answer is yes, it is about rank.)
(The long answer goes under the cut.)

ISAYAMA’S OITA 4PM RADIO INTERVIEW: ON SNK’S THEME
Translation: @yusenki, Editor: twitter@braunsofsteel
On Tuesday March 13th, 2018, Isayama gave a short interview on NHK’s Oita 4PM Radio program. A short segment of the show was transcribed by fans on twitter, where Isayama spoke about the current theme of the series:
Isayama on SNK’s theme:
SNK’s general theme: Liberation from Oppression
Isayama on the current theme:
“One without knowing, might become a perpetrator (attacker/aggressor). Because one thought one was a victim, one can become a perpetrator. It’s good to doubt yourself. Sometime it is good not to overly believe in oneself. Everyone has a side inside of them that is a cruel person.“

Translator’s Note: The OP also commented that Isayama wanted to convey to readers not to overly believe in oneself too much, like in a typical shonen manga style.

Isayama’s 2018 Oita Q&A and Autograph Event: Bertolt
[translation: @yusenki | editing: twitter@braunsofsteel ]
This is a compilation of the questions fans asked Isayama about Bertolt from the Q&A and autograph signing in Oita that occurred on March 3rd, 2018.
Update:
Isayama on Bertolt Appearing in the Manga
Q: I wished that I could see Bertolt’s adult appearance after the 4 years time skip T___T A: But I don’t think a character would die just like that. They might have died in the story, somehow…because they will still often make an appearance.
Source
Isayama on Chapter 84:
Q: Hmm, I wonder…but what were the 104th thinking at that time?
A: Well, they were like “Oh…” Whether Armin can be revived or not. Although Bertolt was confused and asked for help, they wished that he would just stop.
Source, 2
Isayama on Bertolt and Erwin:
Quote from Isayama: “I feel it is quite difficult to retrospect about Erwin (as a character/individual). I feel that he is already completed. As for Bertolt, not yet, I still have not finished (drawing him)…”
Source
Isayama on why Bertolt was chosen as the Colossal Titan:
General Summary: The reason Bertolt was chosen as the Colossal Titan wielder is because of his exceptionally high capabilities.
Translator’s Note: The rest of the tweet in the source is the user’s reaction towards Isayama’s answer, which will remain untranslated to respect their privacy.
Source
Quote from Isayama: “For (him) to be entrusted with the most important thing, there is something hidden inside of him—well, I think he could do anything. He will grow mentally later.
Source
Isayama on Bertolt’s family environment:
Bakku (Isayama’s editor): The official answer is “don’t expect any of it” Isayama: Our real feeling about it is that we never really think about it. Bakku: Then we can make that as the official answer. Isayama: No, but maybe…I’ll make them now. I feel he did it for the sake of his father after all.
Source
Isayama on Bertolt’s Family:
“Because it is quite difficult to create the setting for Bertolt’s parents, that’s why somehow they are already dead. That’s what happened.”

Isayama’s 2018 Oita Q&A and Autograph Event: Erwin
[translation: @yusenki | editing: twitter@braunsofsteel ]
This is a compilation of the questions fans asked Isayama about Erwin Smith from the Q&A and autograph signing in Oita that occurred on March 3rd, 2018.
Isayama on Erwin’s Role in the Manga
Q: What kind of existence does Erwin have in Shingeki?
A: It’s important for the protagonists to have a charismatic leader and that person is Erwin. I think he was never in a cold sweat. It will be different if he did. Should I try to draw it a bit on him then?
Left: Isayama’s expression when he asked whether he should draw the cold sweat on Erwin
Right: The result
Source
Isayama on Erwin’s Hair
Q: I like Erwin’s side parted (7:3 proportion) hair, but I think it was drawn differently in the middle (of series)?
A: There are a lot of horse-riding scenes and his hair wouldn’t look like this (perfectly side-parted). I became irritated and fixed it. I should have done it since beginning.
Source
Isayama on Erwin’s Mother
Isayama: I am thinking about it now Bakku: I need to take note on it.
Source
Isayama on Erwin and Levi’s Hand Touch
Q: When entrusted the serum, the commander’s and captain’s hands were touching, was there any intention (toward the gesture)? *laugh*
Bakku: Do you refer to Isayama, or Erwin and Levi?
Isayama: There was no special intention, but for those two, I think it is normal for their hands to touch…
Source
Full Direct Quote
Isayama: Because they were passing items, it is possible for their hands to touch, but intentionally? Bakku: Intentionally? You mean Isayama or Erwin & Levi? Q: Both Isayama: ah! I don’t know about that. There’s a possibility that their hands just moved on their own.

Editor’s Note: The first translation was completed before a fan completed transcript of several of the questions during the event was released. The source has video evidence of the wording and has transcribed Isayama’s words as best she could. Both translations are put down for record keeping purposes and for comparison to give fans a more complete understanding.
Isayama on Erwin Appearing in the Manga
Q: Is there any chance that Erwin will make his appearance again in the manga, even it is just one panel?
A: I think there will be. Like a flashback.
Source
Isayama on Erwin’s remains
Q: What happened to Erwin’s remains?
A: Although at that time he couldn’t go immediately, at a later date, Levi brought back Erwin’s skeletal remains and buried them. Although a lot of people died, it seems that only Erwin received special burial.
Source
Full Direction Quote
Q: Did the captain have a burial for Erwin’s body?
A: Yeah, it was special only for the commander…That day, Levi went back once, but it was impossible to do it, because so many people died. When he managed to, Erwin was pretty much skeletonized. I think he was pretty much skeletonized when he was buried.

Isayama on Erwin and Levi’s First Meeting in ACWNR
A: However, the basic settings where Erwin set his eyes on thug Levi in the underground and drew him in (to the SC), was my own design.

Isayama’s 2018 Oita Q&A and Autograph Event: Flock
[translation: @yusenki | editing: twitter@braunsofsteel ]
This is a compilation of the questions fans asked Isayama about Flock from the Q&A and autograph signing in Oita that occurred on March 3rd, 2018.
Isayama on Flock’s role in the manga:
Q: Do you aim to have a prepared role for Flock? A: Do you mean his name’s meaning? Q: Oh no, the meaning of his existence… A: Oh, yes a very important role Q: That’s!!! You mean in a underhanded** way? A: Yes.
Source
Translator note: The interviewer used the term 飛び道具 (missile) for guessing Flock’s future role. The term is slang, generally used to mean in a “cowardly/unethical way”. In the past, combat involved hands or swords only. Using a gun/missile would then be considered a cowardly move

[translation: @yusenki | editing: twitter@braunsofsteel ]
This is a compilation of the questions fans asked Isayama about Mike Zacharius from the Q&A and autograph signing in Oita that occurred on March 3rd, 2018.
Surrounding people’s reaction toward Mike’s death:
Q: How did Erwin and Levi react toward Mike’s death (any portrayal/description about), it was necessary, right?
Bakku-san smiled bitterly.
Isayama: We must have been in a hurry and didn’t manage to draw it properly.
Bakku-san: We lost good people pretty early
Source
Isayama on Mike’s last moment:
Quote from Isayama: I aimed for grimness and as the result, either he was cornered until his dignity was trampled or he was forcefully exposed to the side of him that he didn’t want to show. I thought whether that was the cruelest thing and somehow I did it to him.

Isayama on Thomas after Mike’s Squad Perished
Q: Is the fast horse, Thomas, doing fine after the annihilation of Mike’s squad?
A: Thomas died in the middle of series. The Survey Corps only has 9 surviving members.
Source
Translator’s Note: There are various characters named “Thomas” in this series. This Thomas is the soldier who rode on horseback for several hours to bring back news of Wall Rose’s breach to Erwin.
