In Civilisation and its Discontents (1930), an essay in which Freud sought to explain the “oceanic feeling” of limitlessness, he makes an analogy between the mind and the history of Rome, the Eternal City. Our memories are stratified in layers, he wrote, which coexist with the present in a palimpsest, despite our attempts at repression, much as “the remains of ancient Rome are found dovetailed into the jumble of a great metropolis”.
