Robot in place, at Crown Hall.
Mechanism working
Pieces laser cut to assemble the robot body
Mechanism to open the structure by 3 arms that rotate 145 degrees with a servo motor that responds to a light sensor on the back of the robot body.
Open Form
Closed Form
Final Prototype
Prototype in action, open and close structure sensible to light.
Structure and mechanism built.
Based on the Hoberman structure for a sphere, one ring of it has the same 2D effect
Hoberman Structure for Sphere, just a 2D part of it.
Test 1, screws and nuts made the structure too heavy. Better try with smaller or plastic parts.
Test for the foldable paper textile.
Using elastic threads for a structure that wants to be retracted. In this case the robot would push the corners to expand it.
Best material tested was yupo.
Expanding Circle
Hoberman Circle Structure Possible solution to open and close folding structure in a uniform way according to the light sensor input data.
Breathing Structure - paper folding
Test 2 - Square folding pattern.
Harder to assemble but greater expansion and compression.
Test 1 - Triangular folding pattern.
