SCAVENGER HUNT POST
Okay, on to the good stuff! Iâm hosting Sarvenaz Tash for the YA Scavenger Hunt! Sarvenaz Tash is the author of THE GEEKâS GUIDE TO UNREQUITED LOVE (an Amazon Best Book of the Year, YALSA Top Ten Quick Pick for Reluctant YA Readers), THREE DAY SUMMER and THE MAPMAKER AND THE GHOST. She was born in Tehran, Iran and grew up on Long Island, NY. She received her BFA in Film and Television from NYUâs Tisch School of the Arts, which means she got to spend most of college running around and making movies (it was a lot of fun). She has dabbled in all sorts of writing including screenwriting, Emmy-award winning copywriting, and professional tweeting for the likes of Bravo and MTV. Sarvenaz currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with her family.
A little about Sarvenazâs book THE GEEKâS GUIDE TO UNREQUITED LOVE: Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Archie and Veronica. Althena and Noth.âŚGraham and Roxy? Graham met his best friend, Roxy, when he moved into her neighborhood eight years ago and she asked him which Hogwarts house heâd be sorted into. Graham has been in love with her ever since. But now theyâre sixteen, still neighbors, still best friends. And Graham and Roxy share more than everâmoving on from their Harry Potter obsession to a serious love of comic books. When Graham learns that the creator of their favorite comic, The Chronicles of Althena, is making a rare appearance at this yearâs New York Comic Con, he knows he must score tickets. And the event inspires Graham to come up with the perfect plan to tell Roxy how he really feels about her. Heâs got three days to woo his best friend at the coolest, kookiest con full of superheroes and supervillains. But no one at a comic book convention is who they appear to beâŚeven Roxy. And Graham is starting to realize fictional love stories are way less complicated than real-life ones.â

Sarvenazâs Exclusive Content: Dream Casting The Geekâs Guide to Unrequited Love
When I first started writing The Geekâs Guide to Unrequited Love, I created a secret Pinterest board with these faces on it as inspiration. Of course, imagine teenaged versions of all of them! Shaun Evans as Graham (I was watching a lot of Endeavour at the time which is entirely why Graham looks the way he does). Sylvia Brindis as Roxy. Matt Bennett as Casey. Kimiko Glenn as Felicia. Sam Heughan as Devin. Keke Palmer as Amelia.
Thanks so much, Sarvenaz, for giving us a glimpse into your creative process! You can get your hands on Sarvenazâs book here! And thank you to all you hunters playing along. Remember, in order to enter to win a prize pack of team redâs books, including my newest YA thriller THE TELLING, you need to find the hidden number on each post. And oh yeah, 33 is my hidden number! Add up all the hidden numbers of the authors on the red team and youâll have the secret code to enter for the prize!
CONTINUE THE HUNT
To keep going on your quest, check out Michele Baconâs blog post here!
Iâm also giving away an additional copy of THE TELLING - open internationally. To enter, all you need to do is comment on this post below and tell me your favorite spooky book. Alternatively, you can tweet me your fav ghoulish story @AlexandraSirowy using #YASH and #THETELLING. Iâll announce the winner in the comments below and on Twitter! Good luck and happy hunting!!
I dont read many scary books, but when I was younger Iâd read R L Stine books and get so scared!

And NOW!!! The Hunt!!!!
I am your host, Aprilynne Pike.
I am the author of TWELVE YA novels (how did that happen?!?!) and today Iâm featuring EARTHBOUND which recently got a makeover!
Isnât it pretty?!?!?
I am hosting the lovely Erica Cameron!!
After a lifelong obsession with books, Erica Cameron spent her college years studying psychology and creative writing, basically getting credit for reading and learning how to make stories of her own. Now, sheâs the author of several series for young adults. Sheâs also a reader, asexuality advocate, dance fan, choreographer, singer, lover of musical theater, movie obsessed, sucker for romance, Florida resident, and quasi-recluse who loves the beach but hates the heat, has equal passion for the art of Salvador Dali and Venetian Carnival masks, has a penchant for unique jewelry and sun/moon dĂŠcor pieces, and a desire to travel the entire world on a cruise ship. Or a private yacht. You know, whatever works. Her debut novel, Sing Sweet Nightingale, released March 2014 and it was the first volume of The Dream War Saga. In May 2015, Erica and her co-author Lani Woodland launched the Laguna Tides series with Taken by Chance. Riptideâs new YA imprint Triton Books will release both books in the Assassins series, Discord and Nemesis, in 2016. The Ryogan Chronicles, a fantasy trilogy set to launch through Entangled Teen, began in 2017 with Island of Exiles. Next up, Erica will be working with Entangled Teen to create a young adult science fiction trilogy pitched as Star Trek: Voyager meets The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica; Pax Novis is set to fly in 2018.
On the hunt, Erica is featuring her novel ISLAND OF EXILES from Entangled Teen!
In Khyaâs world, every breath is a battle. On the isolated desert island of Shiara, dying young is inevitable. The clan comes before self, and protecting her home means Khya is a warrior above all else. But when following the clan and obeying their leaders could cost her brother his life, Khyaâs home becomes a deadly trap. The only person who can help is Tessen, her lifelong rival and the boy who challenges her at every turn. The council she hoped to join has betrayed her, and their secrets, hundreds of years deep, reach around a world sheâs never seen. To save her brotherâs life and her island home, her only choice is to trust Tessen, turn against her clan, and go on the runâa betrayal and a death sentence.
Awesome right?? You can find Erica at her website, and you can buy the book here! You can also follow her on Twitter at @ByEricaCameron or like her on Facebook here!
Ericaâs exclusive content is an except and several visual inspiration collages! (And they are gorgeous!) Please click to view them!!! (And to get the rest of the info you need for the hunt! I just donât want this to be two feet long on everyoneâs Tumblr. ;))

SCAVENGER HUNT POST Today, I am hosting author Lea Nolan!

She also pens smart, witty contemporary stories for adults filled with head-swooning, heart-throbbing, sweep-you-off your feet romance. With her heroically supportive husband and three clever children, she resides in Maryland where she scarfs down crab cakes and bakes ugly birthday cakes. ABOUT LEAâS BOOK
Things are not always as they appear⌠New school. Cross-country move. Broken heart. If only these were Emma Guthrieâs worst problems as the first day of her sophomore year dawns. Instead, she must battle a trio of enemiesâhuman and spectralâwho may or may not have joined forces against her. All while pretending to be over Cooper Beaumont, her ex-boyfriend and true love, to shield him from her arch-nemesisâs revenge. Worse, when the fight escalates, Emma is tempted to use the black magic sheâs always fought against, endangering her own soul. As her enemies close in, join forces, and fight with new and dark magic sheâs never seen before, Emma must finally harness the power within her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, defeat a centuries-old evil, save her family, and reclaim the only boy sheâs ever loved. EXCLUSIVE CONTENT
Take it away, Lea:
In Illusion, Emma Guthrie uses many hoodoo spells to protect her true love but now-ex boyfriend, Cooper Beaumont, and her twin brother Jack. Sheâs also called upon to break some of the jinxes laid by her enemies. To give you an idea of the kind of hoodoo charms Emma confronts, I thought Iâd share a few with you today. These come directly from my favorite and most informative hoodoo resources, the LuckyMojo.com.
Candle Spells
Many hoodoo practitioners use candles in their spells, and not just any candle will do. Each âlightâ is specifically selected for its individual color and the power associated with it. For example, white candles are thought to bring spiritual blessings; blue will bring peace and harmony, green are used in money spells, red for those involving love, pink for attraction, brown will bring luck in a court case, and black can repel dark thoughts, sorrow or bring freedom from evil. In Illusion, Emma works several powerful candle spells. One deals with love while the other is designed to send back evil to the witch who first performed it. I loved exploring this kind of magic and putting it in Emmaâs capable hand.
Psychic Visions
In hoodoo, psychic vision spiritual supplies are said to enhance the userâs spiritual insights and induce prophetic dreams. They can be added to anointing oils, incense, in sachets, bath crystals, or in specially blended candles. The Psychic Vision spell is one of the only instances in which Iâve strayed from authentic hoodoo for the purposes of my books. In Illusion and the other books in the series, Conjure and Allure, Emma uses a psychic vision spell to watch events that occurred in the past. Because these events happen in a vision, she watches the events in real time as if she was watching a news program on television. This gives her, and the reader, a front seat to the action, some of which occurred up to three centuries ago. These have been some of my very favorite scenes to write, but as I said, they are not reflective of how hoodoo practitioners use psychic vision spiritual supplies in real life.
Bottle Spells
A bottle spell is just what it sounds like: a magical spell contained in a bottle, that is intended to work for oneâs desires. They are not limited to hoodoo and appear in many different kinds of folk magic traditions. Bottle spells are often buried under the threshold of a house or hidden in a chimney to keep witches or those whoâd do evil away from your home. This explains why theyâre often referred to as Witch Bottles. These bottles are often filled with commonly found and sharp items like pins, nails, glass shards, hair, and even urine. In Illusion, Emma works a Black Hen Feather Witch-Bottle spell that she buries beneath the front porch of one of her worst enemies. Itâs filled with black hen feathers which are thought to be useful for reversing jinxes.
I hope you enjoyed this introduction to hoodoo magic and some of its spells. Though these charms seem simple on their surface, many people believe in their power and rely on them to offer protection or grant their most fervent desires. For more information about hoodoo magic and more examples of spells, I highly recommend that you check out the Lucky Mojo Curio Company. Itâs owner, Catherine Yronwode, has painstakingly recorded the history of hoodoo, collected oral histories of spells, and is a well respected manufacturer of authentic charms.
Thanks so much for having me. This was a lot of fun! Best of luck to those who enter the #YASH giveaway!
~Lea

SCAVENGER HUNT POST
And now onto the good part. Today, Iâm thrilled to be hosting author Livia Blackburne and an exclusive deleted scene from her novel, Daughter of Dusk.
Livia Blackburne wrote her first novel while researching the neuroscience of reading at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Â Since then, sheâs switched to full time writing, which also involves getting into peopleâs heads but without the help of a three tesla MRI scanner. Â Her novel Midnight Thief debuted with Disney-Hyperion in July 2014, and its sequel Daughter of Dusk came out in August 2015.
After learning the truth about her bloodlines, Kyra canât help but feel like a monster. Though sheâs formed a tentative alliance with the Palace, Kyra must keep her identity a secret or risk being hunted like the rest of her Demon Rider kin. Tristam and the imprisoned assassin James are among the few who know about her heritage, but when Tristam reveals a heartbreaking secret of his own, Kyraâs not sure she can trust him. And with Jamesâs fate in the hands of the palace, Kyra fears that he will give her away to save himself. As tensions rise within Forgeâs Council, and vicious Demon Rider attacks continue in surrounding villages, Kyra knows she must do something to save her city. But she walks a dangerous line between opposing armies: will she be able to use her link to the Demon Riders for good, or will her Makvani blood prove to be deadly? In this spellbinding sequel to Midnight Thief, Kyra and Tristam face their biggest battle yet as they grapple with changing allegiances, shocking deceit, and vengeful opponents.
Visit Liviaâs website here or buy Daughter of Dusk here.
EXCLUSIVE CONTENT: DELETED SCENE FROM DAUGHTER OF DUSK
This is an early scene showing Flick as a bridge between the Demon Riders, the caravaners, and the people of Forge.
They arrived at the trader camp to the strange sight of Flick sitting around the campfire with what looked like five or six young demon riders. It was so unexpected that Kyra wondered if there were groups of traders that just happened to dress like the Makvani, but she came closer she definitely recognize Adele and her friend Mela. There were no weapons out, and the conversation seemed friendly. Flick was animatedly waving his hands as he spoke, and the other seemed to be listening. The rest of the caravaner is given a wide berth, and Kyra saw a few of the spearmen nervously watching the conversation.
âWhatâs going on over there?â Tristam asked.
âI have no idea,â said Kyra.
âKyra!â Lettie ran toward them. She was bundled up in her winter cloak and several layers of wool winter tunics, and when she hugged Kyra it felt as if Kyra was hugging a ball. Lettie looked up at Tristam. âHo, Tristam,â she said, and was rewarded with a smile from him.
Kyra jerked her head toward Flick and the campfire. âWhatâs happening there?â
âThe demon riders like him. They think heâs interesting.â
Interesting? Well Flick certainly could be interesting when he wanted to be. âAnd the caravaners, theyâre all right with this?â
Lettie shrugged. âSome of them complained, but everyone listens to Jacobo.â
Kyra let the others closer. Flick caught sight of her and excused himself from the campfire. He looked her up and down, clearly noticing that she was more disheveled than usual, but not overly worried. Kyra had managed to clean herself up a bit since her adventure in the city. And he must not have heard news yet from the city, or else he wouldâve been much more agitated than he was now.
âKyra, Tristam,â Flick even managed to sound civil to Tristam. âHow are things?â
âWhatâs going on with the Demon Riders?â asked Kyra.
Flick looked back at them, and smiled sheepishly. âYour kinsfolk are not as intimidating as they first seemed. Well, some of them at least.â From the campfire, Adele looked up and saw Kyra and nodded solemnly in greeting. Kyra exchanged and uncertain glances Tristam, and then carefully made her way to the campfire.
âAdele, Mela. I hope you are well.â Flick also rejoined her at the campfire, and then a few moments later a hesitant Tristam.
The two clanswomen inclined their heads in greeting. âThis is [], [], and [],â said Adele, motioning to the others.
Kyra suppose the best way to deal with demon riders were to be as polite as possible. She gave a slight bow and what she hoped was a smile that was not too strained. "I didnât expect to see you here.â
âItâs new for us too,â said Adele, âmixing with the humans.â
âAnd what changes things now?â said Tristam.
Mela gave Tristam a sharp glance. âYou are the young Knight we captured,â she said.
Something twitched in Tristamâs expression. His capture and imprisonment at the hands of the Demon Riders, and the death of a soldier under his command, was not something that he wanted to be reminded of. Kyra worried for a moment that he would say something that would upset the balance, but all Tristam said was, "Yes.â
"Weâre far from home, and I tire of being constantly at odds with the humans,â said Adele.
Her words gave Kyra a spark of hope. "Really? Is it just you, or others as well? â Adele gestured toward the other demon riders around her. âSome of us feel this way, but most do not.â

Fall 2015 YA Scavenger Hunt
WELCOME YA SCAVENGERS! YOUâRE CURRENTLY HUNTING DOWN TEAM PURPLE!
For those of you who donât know me, my nameâs Courtney Alameda and I write YA horror, urban fantasy, science fiction. My debut novel, SHUTTER, hit last February from Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan, and is about a descendant of Abraham van Helsing who exorcises ghosts with a Nikon camera.Â
A few things about me:
- I just got back from Europe last week, having visited England, France, and Italy. It was exactly as awesome as it sounds.
- My favorite YA novel is Markus Zusakâs I AM THE MESSENGER.
- Iâm currently working on a novel called PITCH DARK, which is basically about tomb raiding in deep space. And aliens! Really, really violent aliens. Itâs coming from Macmillan in Fall 2016.
- My favorite television show is GAME OF THRONES, but X-FILES is a close second. ARCHER probably deserves the no. three slot. Danja zown!
- Iâm an avid (but discerning) gamer. I only play one or two games a year, and 2015 is all about FALLOUT 4. Lock and load, kiddies!
- I wrote the opening chapter for SHUTTER approximately 84 times. God, I wish I was kidding âŚ
JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED THAT: I WROTE SHUTTER CHAPTER ONE 84 TIMES.
Remember, there are EIGHT YA Scavenger Hunt teams out there! Check out the YA Scavenger Hunt homepage to get started on another team, or to see all the prizes up for grabs!
Somewhere out in YA Scavenger Hunt Land, an author is hosting a video in which I tell you a real life ghost story of something that happened to me while I was researching SHUTTER. Check it out if you dare! (Itâs actually like a three on the scary scale, youâll be fine.)
Also, check the bottom of this post for giveaway! Anyone want a signed copy of SHUTTER and my ::very last:: reaper necklace from Tatty Devine? Iâm not having any more of these made, folks! LAST CALL!Â
Without further ado, Iâm happy to be hosting YASH author Elizabeth Holloway, author of CALL ME GRIM (Month9Books 2014) and its sequel, DEATH BECOMES ME, coming this November!
Elizabeth Holloway is a writer of young adult fiction living in Southern Pennsylvania with her two teen children and their growing number of pets.
In addition to writing, she is a registered nurse, an avid reader, an out-of-practice artist, a karaoke singer, and music lover. She is still trying to decide what she wants to be when she grows up.
Elizabeth is showcasing her new novel, DEATH BECOMES ME, for the YA Scavenger Hunt this year. This is a never-before-seen cover, YA Scavengers!!
BEHOLD THE AWESOME:
DEATH BECOMES ME
Libbi and Aaron are Grim Reapers on the run. They may have escaped their hometown of Carroll Falls unscathed, and are together and alive (well, more or less), but theyâll soon find thereâs a price to pay. A deadly one.
By escaping Carroll Falls, Libbi and Aaron have broken the Reaperâs covenant with Abaddon, aka Death himself â and now theyâre right at the top of Abaddonâs Most Wanted list. Thereâs nowhere to hide, and not a single person, alive or dead, they can turn to for help.
But just as itâs looking like the end of the line, Libbi hears word of a Reaper in hiding â a Reaper who once escaped Abaddonâs wrath. Finding this mysterious Reaper might be the perfect solution⌠if Death doesnât find them first.
Sounds amazing, right!? I canât wait to get my hands on this one! You can buy CALL ME GRIM here, and follow her on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, or her blog!
WANT MORE YA SCAVENGER HUNT!? HEAD TO THE NEXT STOP!!
Finally, you patient souls, hereâs the promised Rafflecopter giveaway. I have one grand prize and two regular prizes to give away!Â
Thatâs my last Tatty Devine reaper necklace and my second-to-last Nikon camera USB drive down there! Go enter to win those suckers!
I donât really read horror YA novels...Â

If youâre here looking for my bonus content (a sneak peek into MAP OF FATES), youâll just have to keep hunting around Team Green. How this shindig works is that each author hosts a different author. Click from blog to blog, and youâll find my content! But here todayâŚ
Iâm excited to be hosting ERIN BOWMAN!
If youâve read Erinâs TAKEN series, you know her books are page-turners, and her newest, VENGEANCE ROAD, is a YA Western thatâll keep you on the edge of your seat.Â
Erin Bowman used to tell stories visually as a web designer. Now a full-time writer, she relies solely on words. She lives in New Hampshire with her family, and when not writing she can often be found hiking, commenting on good typography, and obsessing over all things Harry Potter. She is the author of the Taken trilogy (HarperTeen) and Vengeance Road (HMH). You can visit her online at embowman.com or on twitter @erin_bowman.
You can find more information about VENGEANCE ROAD, and figure out how to get the book for your very own (and obviously you want itâhow gorgeous is this cover??) right here.Â
When Kate Thompsonâs father is killed by the notorious Rose Riders for a mysterious journal that reveals the secret location of a gold mine, the eighteen-year-old disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers and justice. What she finds are devious strangers, dust storms, and a pair of brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, she gets closer to the truth about herself and must decide if thereâs room for love in a heart so full of hate.
In the spirit of True Grit, the cutthroat days of the Wild West come to life for a new generation.
ERINâSÂ EXCLUSIVE CONTENT:
I always listen to music while writing. Not music with lyrics (too distracting!), but âepicâ music. (Think: Two Steps From Hell and Audiomachine.) This type of music helped me draft my Taken trilogy, but Vengeance Roadâmy standalone YA Western released last monthâwas different. My go-to composersâ create music that lends itself wonderfully to sci-fi and fantasy worlds, and that mood and tone made it impossible for me to get into the right mindset to draft a Western.
So I turned to my favorite Western movies and TV shows. The sounds we associate with the Wild West are very distinct, and in no time, Iâd pulled together the perfect western-writing playlist. Here are some of my favorites:
The entire Hell on Wheels, Season One soundtrack (Kevin Kiner & Gustavo Santaolalla) is incredible, but thereâs nothing quiet like the extended theme.
Another soundtrack I listened to on repeat was Marco Beltramiâs 3:10 to Yuma (2007). Iâm particularly fond of the tracks Bible Study and Who Let the Cows Out?
No list would be complete without Ennio Morriconeâs iconic work for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I love the stark, eerie quality to this film score, complete with whistles, yodels, and gunshots. The theme might be one of the most easily recognized in film history.
Iâm not a gamer, so a happy surprise for me was stumbling upon the scores for video games set in the Wild West. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (Pawel Blaszczak) is great, but my favorite is Red Dead Redemption (Billy Elm & Woody Jackson), which is reminiscent of Good/Bad/Ugly. I especially love The Shootist track.
Thatâs just the tip of the iceberg, but Iâll stop before things gets too long. If youâre curious about what else I listened to while drafting (and revising!) Vengeance Road, you can check out my compilation of instrumental Western writing music on Spotify.

On to the Hunt
I am very excited to be hosting two authors here: Leah & Kate Rooper!
Leah and Kate Rooper are sisters from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Growing up beside the Pacific Ocean and inside a temperate rainforest fed their sense of adventure as children, and nourished a curiosity for strange and distant lands. They fed this curiosity with booksâlots and lots of books. After experiencing the magic of Middle-earth, they began creating their own worlds. When theyâre not writing, Leah and Kate spend their time blogging and vlogging about their travel adventures and their writing journey.
The Book
Some tombs should never be openedâŚ
Mummification was not the kind of experiment teen scientist Jane thought sheâd be conducting-especially not when she winds up trapped in the Egyptian underworld. If thatâs not bad enough, the snarky (but outrageously handsome) god Anubis has sworn to devour her soul. Her only ticket out of the underworld? Go back in time and steal the heart of King Tutankhamen.
Time to test that hypothesis.
Between posing as a priestess, trying to murder the intriguing young pharaoh, and being stalked by Anubis-who canât seem to decide if heâs going to kiss her or kill her-Jane has to make a choice: do the logical thing and steal Tutâs heart, or find a way to save them bothâŚeven if it means rebelling against all the gods of Egypt.
Exclusive Content
Doesnât that sound a-mazing and oh-so-appropriate for this month?! Leah and Kate have chosen to share an exclusive sneak peek at a chapter from Jane Unwrapped! Check it out:
Anubis
The lanterns in the room burn to low red embers, but pale moonlight spreads like a silk curtain. Jane lies beside me, her breath unsteady.
âCanât sleep?â I murmur.
She rolls over to face me, her dark hair in tangles around her face. âIâm not very good at being alive.â
I have to smile. âFrom the sounds of it, you werenât much good at being alive even when you were alive.â
âWell, I wonât have to worry about it for much longer,â she says, brushing some sand off her arm.
Her words leave me cold. âDonâtâŚdonât say things like that.â
âWhy?â She shrugs. âMy soulâs evaporating quicker than acetone.â
I donât want to think about her soul anywhere except right here with me. I pull her against me so her head rests on my chest, and my arm curves around herâas if that could keep her soul together.
I have no idea how I kept her soul tethered here before but I do know one thing. If she starts disappearing again, Iâll use every bit of power I have to keep her with me.
I pull her tighter against myself. I wonder if she can hear my useless heart beneath my chestâbeating for her. If she had one, would it beat for me?
A god can always feel when a human worships themâ their prayers pulse around their soul like a beating heart. Mortals always want something with their prayers. Theyâd pray to me in the presence of death, wanting comfort, protection, peace⌠I am used to providing all these things.
But Jane, as always, is different. Her worship doesnât feel like a prayerâin fact, itâs like nothing Iâve ever felt before. All of Egyptâfrom the pharaohs to the farmersâhave worshipped me. But not like this.
Jane moves slightly, reaching for my hand, until she intertwines our fingers.
The touch is like an electric strike to my senses. My body hums.
âYou canât fade away tonight, Ez,â I say.
âWhy not?â
I look down at her, my mouth curving slightly. âBecause this is your last night before I devour you.â
She trembles but shifts closer to me. Itâs not fear, then. âNoâŚyou wonât.â
âIs that so?â A smile tugs at my lip. She must hear the tease in my voice. Her nose brushes my chin as she looks up at me.
I move quickly, so she falls to the pillows in a fluster and Iâm above her. I take her wrist to my mouth. âIt really wouldnât be that hard. A quick bite hereâŚâ My lips slide over her skin, up her arm until I reach her shoulder.
I sense her holding her breath tight in her chest. I let my lips rest on her shoulder for a moment. Then I kiss her skin. âA quick bite here.â
All the breath sheâd been holding comes out in a quick gasp. I look up at her through my lashes.
Sheâs so beautiful, I feel compelled to take her face in my hands. My chest presses down on hers, and I can feel the heat of her skin through her silk nightdress.
Her worship is so strong, pulsing in my ears. The world fades away. My only focus is her face: eyes closed, chin tilted up, her lips slightly parted. Iâm overcome by intoxicating want, and as every moment passes, I give in to it. My fingers slide into her hair, my other hand trailing across the soft curves of her body.
Her worship is not for comfort, protection, or peace. Itâs for me.
She wants me. And I am terrified, knowing how much I want her back.
âAnd then,â I say, finding my voice again, âIâd just open my mouth and devour you.â
I lean down toward her. I want to kiss her. I want to be with her, without any barriers between us. What harm ever came from a god loving a mortal?
My heart slams against my chest like a mallet, and I shoot away from her, rolling as far to the edge of the pillows as I can manage.
There are more reasons than the stars why I cannot have her. But even if I were to ignore all the dangers, I canât ignore her feelings. I donât understand them, but I do know a god can get drunk on that sort of love.
This palace was built on that worshipâand both the king and god went mad from it.
I turn my head to look at Jane. Sheâs talking, in that fast way she does, face flushed and words flustered.
I finally steady my breath and turn to her, almost laughing. âCome on, Ez, Iâm not your pharaoh.â
She turns to me, face falling as if I offended her. âNo, of course.â
I bite my lip. Even a hapless, whiny pharaoh like Tutankhamen is better for her to love than me. I shouldnât have let it get that far.
Hesitantly, I whisper, âYou should go to your body tonight.â
Her soul is weak, and itâs probably my fault.
She looks up at me with a half-lidded gaze. âWill you stay with me?â
In all the eons I have lived, amid the most beautiful queens and courtesans to grace the earth, never did I imagine the pinnacle of my existence being asked this question by a firefly of a girl. A flicker, and sheâs gone.
âAnd here I thought you knew the answer to everything.â
She turns away, and I pull her against my chest. I can be selfish in the dark. But I canât help but think: if a king went mad from the light of the sun, the stars only know what horror could befall loving a god of darkness.
Mortals and gods and pharaohs and romanceâŚisnât that deliciously unique?
So nowâs the part where you can go on to win a copy of Jane Unwrapped along with 159 other books (including my Three Day Summer). To do so, you need to know that my favorite number is 8. Add up all of Team Orangeâs favorite numbers to get the code to enter our leg of the contest here.
