> ☠︎ it wasn’t until she got to new york that she learned about mutants, where she was from the news of mutants was not widely known. it was then she realized this was not a gift from the gods but a family of mutants.

Solomon recognizes the voice well before he can put a face to it, but as soon as his gaze settles on Vera he quirks a barely-there smile. The mousy medium. He’d heard a little about her business and would be thoroughly inclined to call it a load of bullshit, if not for the mutant ability he could sense on her; the potency of it always tasted like the thickness of ozone at the back of his throat. He assumed that had a little something to do with it, or she wouldn’t be in so frequently with items of unique interest to trade.

“For you? Absolutely.” Solomon’s demeanor shifts as he closes his books and stacks them aside, pulling an empty, velvety display board from under the counter to set out for her. “What eccentric little doo-dad have you brought me today?” His tone could be sarcastic, but it isn’t; he’s genuinely curious. Vera tends to bring him some of the most interesting artifacts.

Vera seems to breath a sigh of relief. She hardly wanted to be a burden to the man, a man who’d be so kind to her so far. She adores this little pawn shop despite it’s many whisperings, there’s always something in here that catches her eye. Of course she often leaves without buying such tempting items but she still browses nonetheless. Maybe one day she’ll splurge and by a little jewelry with some history. “Thank you. Things ran long today, I was planning to come by earlier.” The woman explains as she approaches the counter. “I feel like I’ve gotten something really nice. It’s an ancient family heirloom.” Vera is so careful with the object as she pulls it out. It’s an ornate music box, carved from cedar wood, designs of swirls and gems decorate the box. There’s a small little handle that looks to be incrusted with more gems that wind up the music box. “I haven’t played it yet, but I’m sure it’s a delightfully creepy tune. I was hoping that jewels were real. They claimed they were but... I rather take your word for it.”

Outgoing has always been the best adjective to describe Axel — always stepping into a situation with a fearless attitude. He didn’t have many people to rely on growing up and developing the thick skin was important for survival. He wonders how different life would have been if he hadn’t tried doing everything on his own. Axel could have been less stubborn — behaved the way all the visiting parents looking to adopt preferred and found a forever home. However, fate decided on a different path  for him and there were no regrets in how anything in his life panned out. It brought Vera into his life after all.

They live across from each other, so becoming friends happened quickly. Axel discovered that they were both Mutants, which felt nice to have another thing in common and didn’t have to hide when they were together. He liked using his abilities for day-to-day activities, embracing the fire within him. It’s always burning, keeping his skin warm. “I was just thinking about you. Work keeping you busy?” He understands and respects staying so productive. They’re both like that when you really think about it. “Let me hold those for you.” Axel reaches for the groceries, holding onto the bag to make it easier for Vera to find her keys. “We’re good —  taking everything one day at a time. You should come join us at the rink one of these days when you’re free. All she can talk about is getting you out there on the ice.”

They were opposites, truly. Axel outgoing and bright. Vera withdrawn and dark. It’s a wonder they worked at all but they did well. She supposed hot and cold meet somewhere in the middle, and they do too. It’s easy with Axel, something about him just so inviting and even Vera couldn’t fight that warmth off. So when it came to befriended Axel it was easy as breathing. To add on top of that goodness, he’s got an angel of a daughter that Vera has come to adore with all her heart. Mila wasn’t frighten of her as many are, instead they bonded over cold fingers and cheesy American movies. The whole Cuttler family has charmed their way into Vera’s heart. 

A smile spreads across her face easily when she’s around Axel, he’s infectious. Normally that short of thing tends to scare Vera off, too much frightens her. But not with him. “That’s sweet of you to be thinking about me...” She usually doesn’t think of herself as all the memorable. In fact she tends to purposely blend into the background. But... being noticed every once in awhile isn’t so bad. “Yes, works been so hectic lately. But things to be slowing down to their normal rate finally. I guess word spread about my little shop.” Vera laughs softly, a shy sort of embarrassed laugh. It’s always been a dream to help people but the sheer number of people coming is overwhelming. “Oh, thank you.” She breathes, letting the groceries go, it’s much easier to find her keys now. Turning the lock, she opens the door wide enough for Axel to come in too. “I’m happy to hear that.” It does bring real joy to Vera to know that little family is thriving across the hall from her. And soon laughter leaves her lips before she shakes her head. “I’ve never been ice skating in my life, I’m not sure you two want me out on the ice. I’ll just embarrass you. -- But I’m not opposed to visiting the rink. I think that could be a lot of fun.”

Vera had always been a timid soul, often times it was easier that way. She had grown up in a large family and it was like she had built in friends... so she never needed any until she moved to New York. It was hard here in New York, so she kept to herself most of the time. It was easier that way she wouldn’t have to divulge her secrets to anyone and risk being outed.  But things don’t always turn out the way she planned. Vera had befriended the neighbor across from her and his daughter, a cute little family. They turned out to be mutants just like her and that made things so much easier on her, not having to worry about her neighbors and making two friends while she was at it. She hadn’t seen them lately, getting home later than usual because her little shop has been booming with business but tonight she was able to get off at her usual time and pick up the groceries. Luck would have it she comes across her dear friend... well.. yes, friend. “It’s nice to see you, it’s been awhile.” She finally says, balancing her many groceries in her arms as she digs around for her keys. “How have you and Mila been? I’ve’ missed seeing you two.”

“We’re closed.” Solomon’s tone carried easily from the back wall of the shop without him having to raise his voice, following the soft tinkle of the front door’s bell. “Read the sign?” He often flipped the aged piece of cardboard to ‘closed’ but forgot to lock the door, which his uncle had always chastised him for when it invited after-hours customers. Obviously, he hadn’t learned, and still, Solomon didn’t make any moves to remedy it. He continued to pore over the day’s books on the counter, not looking up as he expected to hear the bell signifying the person’s exit.

Vera feels a red flush creeping up her cheeks. She’s already upset with herself with not reading the sign, because of course she’d walk into the business when it’s closed. While she frequents the shop often she’s usually in at an earlier hour but her reading ran much longer than expected. And well Vera takes all sorts of payments, a sort of bartering system if people don’t have the money for a reading. She’ll take items instead and often comes to sell them at the pawn shop to receive cash instead. “I’m so sorry.” Vera breathes, voice softer than she anticipates. So she repeats again “Sorry.” A little louder this time hopefully she’s heard. There’s a minor dilemma, she needs this money from this heirloom to pay her rent. So now she’s at a standstill, of what she should do. She doesn’t want to be that annoying customer that keeps the employee late but the money is needed. “Do you think you could spare just a few minutes?”

simon’s world was small. such a big city, such a small world. if it weren’t for the blessing and curse of his ability, the likelihood that he would’ve been able to explore the city as far as he just had ? minimal. but there he sat, outside of the bijou – heard of before, apparently the most boujee movie theater one could attend ( probably preferred the spelling of ‘theatre’ ). but there he was… staring at a marquee with the name of a movie he did not recognize, nor could he pronounce for the life of him. 

nonetheless, he turned his head to the nearest person – whether they were planning to enter or not – and nodded towards it. “ aaaaaany clue what the hell… ‘la haine’ is ? ” he did not expect a ‘yes’… unless they were heading in to watch this odd indie french ( ? ) film. “ smaller town, these guys would’ve gone out of business ages ago. ”

Vera walks with her head down, she swears it blocks out the noise of the city that rumbles endlessly in her ears. There’s enough noise in this world as it is, with voices constantly whispering, begging and pleading to be heard. It’s something she’s learned to tune out in her day to day life but often become so overwhelming that they all coming screaming to the surface. Today is a good day though, things are quiet and easily quelled into just a small murmur. It’s truly a wonder that she had heard the stranger call out to her.  

Vera looks around, eyes darting quickly around like some wild animal being cornered. She’s going to make sure she’s being spoken to so she doesn’t embarrass herself. There are a few timid steps forward towards the stranger with a shake of her head. “Never heard of it.” Her eyes dart up to the theatre’s showings, she’s never heard of any of these films. Some in languages she cannot even read. “Must be an underground market for it here.” It’s a surprise how many businesses stay a float here. “You may have to just take a chance on it. It could be good.”

how old were they when they first discovered their abilities? how did it happen?

vera was born into a mutant family and from a young age she could speak to people that weren’t there. her grandmother had similar capabilities and bestowed upon her a love to help people -- to provide closure. after her grandmother’s death she moved to new york to open her own medium business to help others.

so, what can your mutant do with their abilities?

communication with the dead

temporary raising of the dead in a corporeal form

has visions of death in her dreams (of those who have already passed)

what’s one thing they hope to learn or are currently trying to learn with their abilities?

vera is currently trying to learn how to control the dead once she’s raised them. she so far hasn’t been able to have them under her control. 

what is the most powerful thing your mutant can do with their abilities? do you think they would actually do it?

raise the dead. she’s did it because of curiosity mostly and has not intention of doing anything ill willed with them.

Robots and Mechanical Beings are immune to necromancy as they have no souls or life force.

do they use their abilities in their day-to-day life? in what ways?

she uses them to bring closure. she runs a little shop where people can come in and communicate with their loved ones,

as a mutant, do they have any goals? dreams?

she opens one day that mutants and humans can live in harmony but for now she’ll settle with the little bit of peace she has in her shop

vera just wants to help people mourn and get closure

how do they feel about the last 30+ years of mutant history? notably, THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS OF 1983 AND THE ESSEX HOUSE?

vera feels as it was full of empty promises. she hasn’t seen a change in anything expect the notion of mutants existing.
