프뤼당스는 기대고 있는 나무 밑동에 손을 대보았다. 오래되고 거칠어진 나무가 느껴졌다. 비와 외로움으로 그렇게 되었겠지(잘려서 죽은 다음 버려진 나무보다 더 외롭고 슬픈 것이 어디 있을까? 아무짝에도 쓸모없어진 나무,불을 지필 수도, 집을 지을 수도, 연인들을 위한 벤치도 될 수 없는 나무가 되었으니). 나무를 만져보니 애처로움, 애정 같은 게 느껴졌다. 그리고 놀랍게도 눈에 눈물이 고였다. 나무를 살펴보았다. 눈으로 구별하기 아주 힘들었지만 나뭇결을 자세히 들여다보았다. 나무도 이미 회색과 흰색을 띠는데 그 결도 회색과 거의 흰색으로 퇴색되어 있었다(마치 노인들의 혈관 같다는 생각이 들었다. 피가 흐르느 게 보이지 않는 혈관, 피가 흐르는 줄은 알지만 들리지도 않고 보이지도 않는 혈관 같았다). 이 나무에게도 사정은 비슷했다. 수액이 전혀 없었다. 수액, 충동, 열, '하고 싶다'는 열망. 바보 같은 짓, 사랑, 일, 행동하고 싶다는 열망••••••. 프랑수아즈 사강 '길 모퉁이 카페' p.241 고독의 늪 중
