Rayman and Joe returned to the spaceship and made their way back to the Robot Pirate planet. They decided to disguise themselves this time using leftover parts of Robot Pirates and also disguise Joe’s spaceship with leftover warship parts from their previous invasion.
As they got closer, they drove the spaceship at a slower pace as to not draw the attention of the Pirate’s warships. Agreeing with each other that they had gone undetected, they landed the ship in a rocky clearing away from as many Pirates as they could but close enough to where they last came across the Robot Pirate spirit.
They disembarked and quickly hid behind some broken infrastructure. The air was foul and the ground crunched beneath their feet.
“You sure about these disguises, Rayman?” said Joe, as he almost toppled over, clutching the weighty helmet on his head.
“Absolutely, I once fooled a Pirate dressed as a bush!” boasted Rayman, “Okay, so here’s the plan… I have this elixir for creating good dreams. If this Robot Pirate spirit guy is all about nightmares, I think we should make him drink this.” He showed Joe the bubbling elixir by playfully waggling the bottle by it’s neck side to side.
“Excellent, uh, but how do we… do that? The guy’s huge!” Joe stretched his arms out wide, “And not to mention all the Pirates around him, we’ll definitely get captured.”
“As long as they don’t see through our disguises, everything should be fine and we could sneak right up to him. We just need to get close enough to his head again. Perhaps if we come up with a diversion...”
Suddenly, a Robot with a large propeller on it’s head, hovered down from the sky and dropped down in front of them. It had floaty body parts, which were held up with little propellers on each part. It had large red glass eyes, sharp metal claw-like fingers and a large nose. It’s chest had a Robot Pirate emblem on the front.
Rayman, still in his Robot disguise, and the Robot that looked like Rayman pointed at each other.
“Rayman, that one looks just like you…” Joe whispered.
The Robot Rayman reacted to hearing the name Rayman, and lunged straight for them.
Rayman dove into Joe to protect him from the attack. Rayman yelled at Joe to run, while he fought the imposter by shooting power pellets at him. The pellets just ricocheted off the Robot. The armour Rayman was wearing was clunky and slowed him down somewhat, so he attempted to take parts of it off between each shot. Joe, shaking, whipped out his ray-gun from his pocket and started trying to shoot at the Robot Rayman.
Rayman found himself now having to dodge these bullets as well as his own that were bouncing back at him. In the chaos Rayman accidentally dropped the elixir. The glass bottle smashed onto the ground.
The shock of the smashed elixir distracted him for long enough that he got knocked out by the Robot Rayman kicking him in the head.
Everything went black.
Rayman came to while being dragged by his hair against a rough carpet along a winding wooden corridor. He was no longer wearing his disguise and was all bruised and beaten looking. His hands were tied in restraints with blue sparks coming off them, just like the ones Polokus and the other spirits were wearing. He felt weak and could feel his powers being hindered.
He was brought to a wide room, decorated with grotesque wallpaper and a large candle-lit chandelier, with a large window along the back wall and a few steps leading up to a giant telescope. The view from the window was so high up, you could see the curvature of the planet and the top of the giant cannon installed on the front of the planet. A large tv screen on a mechanical arm was hanging down from the ceiling in the middle of the room, which showed a live-stream of Razorbeard sitting in a chair from inside a different room, busy pushing buttons. At either side of this room stood guard a row of Pirates.
The Robot Rayman stopped in the middle of the room before the screen and held Rayman up by his hair. It made a beeping noise to get Razorbeard’s attention. Razorbeard looked back and laughed manically on screen.
“I didn’t expect you to be able to make it here Rayman, but since you are here, what do you think of Robo-Rayman? You inspired me, you see.” Razorbeard’s rough voice crackled through speakers, “Since my Buccaneer prison ship was destroyed, I had no choice but to return to this wretched world. I needed the energy to restore my army and go beyond. Now I wield the power to bring entire planets to their knees!”
Robo-Rayman, who still grasped onto Rayman’s hair tightly, strutted over towards the window and held him up to the telescope, so he could peek through the mechanism. The planet they were on was still slowing being pushed through space by the rockets, and was growing ever closer to the Glade of Dreams, with the giant cannon pointing straight for it. The screen showing Razorbeard turned to face them.
“Take a long last look at your precious Glade of Dreams! And now that your Polokus is gone for good, there’ll no-one there to protect your world from attack! Very soon I’ll get my revenge! You can say goodbye to the Glade of Dreams, forever! I’m so glad you’re here to watch the destruction...”
In front of Razorbeard’s screen in the centre of the room, the floorboards opened up and a pedestal with a big red button on top emerged from underneath.
“Not long now... We’ll soon be close enough so I can fire my cannon straight at it! But since you’re here, maybe I should give you the honours…”
Rayman quickly looked around to see anything that could help him escape. He noticed a walking shell snoozing in the corner of the room inside it’s dog-house. Seeing this opportunity, he broke free as he span his hair really fast to break out of Robo-Rayman’s grasp and jumped away, kicking against the telescope. The telescope swung around and crashed into Robo-Rayman, smashing through the glass window which sent Robo-Rayman flying.
The room was full of chaos, as a strong wind outside blew around the room and the Pirates started shooting wildly. Rayman managed to dodge a wall of bullets and ran in the direction of the walking shell. On his way, he held his bound hands in the path of a Pirate's bullet- the impact broke off the device.
“You idiots!” yelled Razorbeard, punching the armrests of his seat in frustration on screen, “He’s getting away!”
Rayman, who was able to use his hands again, fired power-pellets back at the Robot Pirates on either side of the room, breaking a few of them apart. The screen with Razorbeard on it had been hit by stray bullets and smashed into pieces.
Rayman ran close enough to activate the walking shell’s motion sensors. The walking shell jerked awake and beelined straight for Rayman. Rayman who was still sore and injured from dealing with Robo-Rayman, braced himself to have to run circles around this shell before being able to ride it away. However, he was pleasantly surprised when it quickly screeched to a halt before him. It let Rayman climb on top without effort and it’s feet clicky-clacked against the floorboards as it carried him hastily out of the room.
“You can’t get away from me so easily here!” Razorbeard roared through the tannoy system as Rayman travelled down the corridors, “My soldiers are ‘round every corner!”
Robo-Rayman awkwardly flew back through the smashed window it fell out from, wobbled then collapsed on the ground. A few sparks hopped out of it’s broken body parts. A secret door opened in the side of the room and Razorbeard stepped out and hobbled on his pegleg over to Robo-Rayman.
Razorbeard demanded that the remaining Pirates in the room chase after Rayman, but not before insulting them all. The Robot Pirates quickly ran forward and accidentally bumped into each other, before scrambling back up again to leave the room.
Razorbeard whipped out a screwdriver to fix Robo-Rayman’s lose parts as he grumbled under his breath.
“Even if he gets away, he’s powerless to stop me this time.”
The walking shell ran down the spiralling corridors carrying Rayman. A claxon alarm went off, echoing around the tower and red strobe lights were activated. The shell was fast and did it’s best to outrun the Pirates following them. There were a few close encounters where the shell clipped the corners of walls but thankfully it didn’t explode.
This tower they were inside was gigantic but the walking shell knew where it was going and they eventually escaped to the outside in no time. Waiting outside to ambush him were more Pirates, including a couple of larger Barrel-Pirates, but once they saw Rayman literally riding on a bomb they jumped back in panic letting them pass. Up ahead was a giant lava-filled crevice that stretched wide. They out-manoeuvred the Pirates’ bullets and the shell ran safely across the lava. The shell continued running and ventured deep into a thick jungle on the other side.
“I’m glad you remember me friend, but where are you taking me?”, mumbled an exhausted Rayman, who was now crouched on top of the shell trying to duck from the overhead foliage.
Being confident they had lost the Pirates, they eventually entered a small clearing. Rayman limped off the walking shell and patted it on the head as a thank you. He stopped to pay attention to his new surroundings. The jungle around him was full of unfamiliar and alien-looking vegetation. Regardless, it looked obviously ill. This was probably some of the last plant life left on this planet, Rayman thought to himself. At one side of the clearing was a cliff side with a view. This world was covered in rivers of oil and sludge from factories and fire spread as lava broke through the crust. Large mechanical-looking monsters roamed around in the distance. The sky was dark, stormy and choked with pollution, but you could still make out the shapes of the other planets being dragged along behind.
Joe was also in the clearing, waiting inside his disguised spaceship. When Robo-Rayman flew away with Rayman earlier, he had made his way here to keep watch of the tower. He was still dressed as a Pirate. Joe excitedly ran out of the ship and over to Rayman, arms outstretched for a hug.
“Boy am I glad to see you! I got worried when I heard the alarms going off in that tower. Are you okay? You don’t look so good...”
Rayman stepped back, his face dropped.
“I lost the elixir. And Razorbeard is getting ready to fire the weapon. That tower must be where the main controls for everything are, but it’s the size of a city and there must have been a million Pirates patrolling the corridors. I was lucky I got out.”
They both sat on the dusty ground, feeling a little defeated. Joe started to remove his clunky disguise while Rayman fell backwards to lie down.
“You’re not alone, Rayman. I’m sure we can think of something.”
Rayman was lying on the ground, his hands on his chest and his head tilted back so everything was upside down. He let out a sigh as he watched the shell run around in circles. It continued to make commotion and would nudge at something on the ground. He thought this behaviour was strange and funny at first but then his face turned quizzical. He got up to investigate.
As he got up and walked over, the shell stopped in it’s tracks and looked up at Rayman. Then it nudged at the ground again. Rayman knelt down and felt the earth. That’s when he noticed the ground was painted. He stood back up to get a better look and then called Joe to come over.
“As much as I hate the Pirates” snorted Rayman, “there’s one thing I love about them: their subtlety”. There was a huge X painted on the ground beneath their feet. Rayman and Joe quickly grabbed some shovels from the spaceship and dug at the X on the ground until they came across a treasure chest.
They heaved the chest out of the hole in the ground and opened it’s heavy lid together. Inside were fragments of broken pieces of masks. They looked similar to the ones Rayman collected before to awaken Polokus back home.
“Masks! But… they’re broken? Why…”
Rayman held up two half-pieces of a mask and upon connecting them together, he was suddenly teleported away.
As much as I love all the appreciation this fic has for Joe, for a second there during the infiltration my mind really wanted to see Ed from Tonic Trouble there in his shoes. For... reasons. 😅
The action bits in this one were such a nice read, the fast pace really suits this chapter. And lovely art as always! It really captures the dynamic well.
And I'm really curious what's up with those other masks. 👀
Hey guys, so I finally managed to draw something after months of nothing- yay✨️
Been looking at Legends Retold and tbh, it got me inspired to draw this suddenly since I haven't drawn anything in months. This is basically this Ashlen design I once did for fun but I gave her some reddish-brown eyes and other tweaks. It was experimental but I thought it looked nice.
Quinn is just trying to warn Ashlen about potential monsters but all Ash wanted was to have some soda.
I think having at least playable Razoff-inspired skin would be already awesome, (although having actual Razoff in game would have even more awesome, but whatever)
either king Teensie or Rayman or Globox might have one (Teensie because NOSE, Globox because t a l l and Rayman because of the funny contrast between the two)
so turns out that my theory that rabbids are not from Rayman's planet is correct?
i don't why, but something in me tells me this is where Aeropolis(or at least re-visioned version of it) gonna be, but i might be wrong. that building kinda reminds me of Aeropolian architecture.
Carmen's real? and maybe even Ssssam?
Knaarens are still thing? That gives a lot of plot opportunities, i would love to see fully grown up king Gumsi
does this mean Jano is real? that would be interesting
If there is The Bog Of Murk... Then...
PLEASE Ubisoft, PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE COUNT RAZOFF REAL AGAIN.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT HE IS ALRIGHT AND NOTHING CATASTROPHIC HAPPENED TO HIM!
LOOK AT HIM. DON'T YOU WANNA GET HIM BACK IN THE SERIES?
if Globox has hoodlum variant(probably bc he and hoodlums both love plum juice), King teensie has electoon variant(probably bc they both been in cages), what Rayman and Barbara will have?
i think Barbara might have knaaren or fairy variant
“What’s going on?” Clark and Rayman exclaimed. Everyone nearby started to panic and those who could started to fight off the nightmares.
Rayman knew something was wrong. He told Clark to hold them off as best he could to protect the people in the town below and charged straight towards the marshes. He stood at the entrance of the Cave of Bad Dreams to confront Jano, the guardian. Rayman cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled out into the caves, his voice carried through echoes, demanding Jano to show himself and explain the nightmares that were appearing.
Jano appeared before him slowly: his long, bony arms pulled his large green bulbous body out of the ground. His ominous presence filled the cave. A top this head sat a large purple top hat, decorated with yellow stars and swirls, identical to the one Polokus wears. One large yellow eye with a slit pupil stared back at Rayman.
Somewhat annoyed by this intrusion, Jano snapped back that he did not appreciate this rude awakening. He bared his sharp pointed teeth at him.
“There are nightmares breaking out of the ground!” Rayman responded, “Are you not in charge of keeping them contained?”
“I can’t help it if Polokus creates new nightmares and I would never release nightmares on purpose! Polokus and I are a team. If that wasn’t the case, then-”
They were interrupted by the ground shaking and the earth started to crumble off the walls of the cave entrance. Jano scratched at the crumbling wall with a long pointed finger. Stone flaked off the wall like crumbly old cement.
“I am containing the nightmares as best as I can, but it’ll be hard to keep up if Polokus isn’t around.”
“What do you mean? Should I go collect the four masks again to awaken him?”
Jano pulled out his skull staff and transported the two of them to a magical realm where stands the podium where Polokus can be summoned. The podium already had the four masks installed.
“Thankfully the masks are still intact” Jano’s voice whispered, “but Polokus is not here communicating to us through dreams. This is concerning.”
Jano tells Rayman that he must travel to the place where all the God’s of all the world’s meet. That was the last place Polokus had travelled to.
“Something must have gone wrong and the world is beginning to fall out of balance. The dream connection to Polokus has been broken, but I know he’s still out there as he is creating new nightmares.”
Rayman recalled the weird dream he had and decided it was best to bring this up to Jano.
“Perhaps that was a message Polokus sent me as a warning? Is this the Robot Pirates doing again?”
Jano scratched at his chin, thinking to himself. He transported them back to the cave entrance and handed Rayman a glass bottle, filled with a glowing effervescent liquid, sealed with a cork.
“Take this. It is a powerful elixir that grants you good dreams. Polokus might need it.”
“Thanks.”
“Unfortunately, I cannot get you to the place where all the God’s of all the world’s meet. To open that portal requires immense energy and it’s best I use that to keep my realm intact. Perhaps the fairies can get you there. They can create silver lums and were entrusted with the knowledge of how to awaken Polokus, after all.”
Rayman returned to the stone circle to try and find Ly again. The ground formed cracks under each footstep and the sky grew dim. Rayman stopped in his tracks. A mysterious flying object plummeted through the sky. It carelessly bumped and crash landed through the trees, just missing Rayman. The glass hatch cracked open and Joe the alien was inside.
“Rayman!” yelled Joe in a panicked voice, “I need to show you something!”
“Joe, this is no time for catching up, something bad is happening...”
Hey! Today is the 4th Anniversary of the Dream Catcher Series! :D
(dA)
I never would have dreamed how big this project would wind up being when I first decided that I could maybe tackle this old story idea I had first wrung up all the way back in 2009.
If you haven't heard about this yet ever, or it's been on your radar and you'd put it away for a later date and then possibly maybe forgot (no shame, it happens to me all the time :'D ) maybe now is the time to take a look at this story! <3
Dream Catcher focuses on one of Rayman's often overshadowed antagonists: Jano, known better to some as "the Guardian of the Cave of Bad Dreams" or "the First Nightmare" with a couple of wild theories and headcanons that put into question what makes a Nightmare and if truly all of them are enemies.
The Series can be read on ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2867737
And tumblr has a Masterpost on it: https://levy120.tumblr.com/post/701247560472494080/dream-catcher-masterpost
…with a couple of extras like Fanart, Playlists or Oneshots within the lore for extra world-building that could not find a place in the series narrative. ;)
I hope you'll enjoy this ride and don't hesitate to let me know what you think!
