“Oh, yes, most definitely,” Jenna said, nursing her tea. “I, uhm, don’t know if I’m an expert on that, but maybe try erm, switching gears? Getting your mind off the problem. Oh, wait, that’s called procrastination, isn’t it…” Unfortunately, she was speaking seriously.

“Unfortunately,” she chuckled.  “Though it’s not really that I don’t want to do things.  I just don’t have the motivation to get it done.  Both work related and non-work related.”  She had a stack of essays left to grade still for her one of her intro courses and a mother breathing down her neck about finalizing the guest list for the wedding.

“Do you ever have one of those days where you just can’t motivate yourself?  That’s me today,” she sighed before sipping her coffee.  “Any suggestions for how to get over it?”

“Because you think I’m secretly into you?  Is that it?  You’re just waiting for me to jump your bones and begin our torrid affair?”

“I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone call this creative,” he admitted, “perhaps you should start taking better breaks.”

“You’re probably right,” she half chuckled.  “Usually my breaks are coffee and a few texts to the fiancé.”

She chuckled.  “Even still...it’s more creative than most of my breaks ever are.”

“I know, V. I just…part of me wonders if my not so friendly ghost is right, you know? Time isn’t a guaranteed thing and what if I miss my window of opportunity? What if something happens to this man before I can meet him too?” She had a million different worries going through her mind right now.

Veronica sighed as she smiled sadly at her.  “You know...if there’s one thing being with Max has taught me it’s that even if you think you missed your window, there is always a shot for a second chance.  You will regret if if you don’t try someday.”

“Actually, I was just trying to get out of doing paperwork,” Devon said, tossing the ball back to the pair of them, “I suppose it’s a valid point, but I’m not an educator.” There’d been a stint where he had to be a peer tutor but that had been an entirely different story. How to pass an Arcanology class was a little different. 

“You’re using soccer to get out of paperwork?” Veronica asked.  “That’s not a procrastination tactic I’ve heard before.”

“Ah yes the ‘Fiance’. Shame that I’ve never met him.”

“Are you doubting my engagement?” she scoffed with a laugh.  “His name is Max.  He’s the broom racing coach.”

“It’s soccer, you’re kicking a ball into a goal, there’s no point in being nervous,” Devon said, tossing the ball to the professor instead, “here, you kick it.”

Veronica caught the ball then rolled her eyes.  To think she was just looking for her fiancé and ended up with this.  “Alright,” she said.  Dropping the ball to the ground, Veronica kicked it into the goal.  “Not hard.  Is that the point you’re trying to prove?”

“Or perhaps, now that there’s no longer a Chancellor you’re related to, you’re ready to admit that you think I’m hot.”

“Even if my mother isn’t the chancellor that doesn’t change the fact that I’m still very much engaged,” Veronica replied while rolling her eyes.  There was nothing wrong with harmless flirting, but he seemed to be flirting more than she expected.

“Something with gravy. Definitely craving gravy. What about you? Any good cravings?”

“I didn’t have any but now that you said that I could go for mashed potatoes and gravy.”

Declan raised an eyebrow but picked it up and handed it to her. “Now I don’t see why you couldn’t have grabbed that yourself. Unless of course you just wanted me to walk over closer to you.”

She rolled her eyes.  “I’d have to lean over the table to reach it,” she told him.  “Or be a show off.” Of course, Veronica probably could have used telepathy but she had completely forgotten that until she’d already asked.  “Thanks.  Maybe I just didn’t want to show off my fancy telekinetic skills,” Veronica teased him.  Regardless, with the pen in hand she started filling out the paper she’d needed to.

“If this is scary I’m pretty sure soccer’s not his future career,” Devon said, “that or he’s never been to the World Cup–have you been to the World Cup?” he questioned the boy, “seen a dead body?”

When the boy shook his head, Veronica sighed.  “Is there a point ot asking him about that?”  She didn’t know what he was getting at, but Veronica didn’t like the way the little freshman seemed incredibly nervous.

“I’m…there’s a ghost and she’s spiteful and annoying while I’m trying to work up the nerve to call my dad,” she explained. “I didn’t meant to yell. “Just trying to actually make some waves here and yet I chickened out. And Cecilia here decided to make it known to me.”

Veronica frowned.  She never was fond of the occult and the idea of ghosts always made her nervous, but she brushed that off.  “It’s okay.  You have every right to take your time to do this, Nina.  Ghosts can learn to mind their own business.  There is no reason you have to rush if you don’t want to.”

“Do you want to try that again?” Devon inquired, miraculously managing to keep most of the sarcasm out of his voice. Apparently he was that desperate to get out of his office and the increasing level of paperwork. “some advice? Try aiming for the goal this time.”

From off to the side, Veronica chuckled while the freshman blanched.  “I’m sure he’s sorry,” she told him with a slight smile.  “Don’t go scaring the kid too much of he’ll never play again.”

Nina had been calling her father and chickening out on speaking to him on and off for a few days. This time, however, the phone got stuck and she couldn’t hang up, so she profusely pressed the button and eve threw it down on the table. Sad, sad as hell. I thought you were, Miss Big Bad Ryback. Can’t even make a call, Cecilia the ghost bane of her existence said. Nina didn’t think before she snapped. “Shut up. Shut the fuck up. I’m so tired of you! Why are you here?!” she yelled. Not realizing that she was the only person that could see and hear this ghost and this could have been a moment when people thought she was crazy.

Veronica frowned when Nina snapped at nothing.  “Nina?” she asked, the worry obvious in her tone.  Something was definitely up, but V had never been the type to jump to conclusions before she had all of the facts.  That was especially true with Nina.  She was family and Veronica always gave her family the benefit of the doubt, even when she probably shouldn’t.  “What’s wrong?”
