VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: PRESENT

"Longing for the blinding chaos to be extinguished in stifled apprehension."

For our presentation, we decided to take an approach to show someone letting go of the chaos that is causing the stifled apprehension. The sun played the role of the "blinding" aspect of our sentence to interpret the effects of the chaos that was present in their life. The object that was written on was used to basically write down and diminish the negativity that was causing anxiety. The wind blowing it away was a great interpretation of the getting thrown in the opposite direction and the actress walking away from it in order to move on.

This is the documentation I took of our piece. We ended up having our public intervention at a shopping center. Our intention was to show to how consumers and the public how being more introspective plays a role in making change in their lives.

For the documentation of the process, I came up with some drawings combined with photo. I intended for the two drawings to flow sequentially. I think that each piece shows how we ‘unraveled’ this idea like yarn from our brains. In the next photo, showing our group creating the project. We settled on the idea of a paneled screen to evoke change from the public. We specifically chose to emphasize the words ‘blinding change’ to highlight our mission statement.

Comment: The power within Barbara Krueger’s work lies within its simplicity. This artist has a strong way with simple text and words, her messages are straight to the point. That power only fuels a conversation of discourse, which could even be seen as a rebellion. Within public space, most people don’t expect to be confronted with such strong statements. Learning about Krueger’s work has helped me to see the necessity of artists who create this conversation. Simple words that confront a status quo can be the instigator of change.

Question: My question would be “How much freedom does the artist have to choose her own sentences?” “How might sites differ with the types of questions?” (ex: making art for a public bus versus a gallery setting?)

The following examples are a mixed media approach for a final project in 3d design. I suggested my group create a large artwork collaboratively and even invite the public to create it. In the right image, rather than writing down the sentence, I chose to create a work representing the sentence. In the left image, I opted for a more digital vision for our mixed media piece. I chose an image I took in a car, and flipped it to represent the ‘blinding chaos’ in our sentence. I also chose to edit the text, by changing the opacity and distance between the letters to emphasize its meaning.
