"Captain Silvers, you have had one tankard too many. Retire to your ship, lest I carry you there."
make me choose - sansastark and witchofthekorcari asked: Victarion or Euron
{⚓} — Lord Theomore’s life work was building a castle. Do you remember him for more than that? It has never been said he was a great reaver. Harlaw is the largest and most peopled island. They have maintained their post, their prestige, but our history does not speak of many a great Harlaw as it does Greyiron, Hoare, or Greyjoy. He follows in the footsteps of his House. Old and dignified, yes, but glorious Ironborn they never claimed to be. And we both know that your words are just that, words, you enjoy showing him up and nothing is like to stop you from continuing to do so.
Maron is one foot into the boots of manhood as it is. The Lord Reaper will grant him the title unless another is in line for it with a stronger claim than his- which could only be had if you have an heir. I am certain you have noticed, Victarion, that your brother looks at his sons with one eye closed. Lord Rodrik is an angry drunkard and the lord reaper does nothing to correct the behavior. It will be ill news for the Iron Fleet if it passes into the hands of your nephew, and you know it.
It is not so difficult to find a woman. You hold a position of power, use it, pick one and take a rock wife- there are few on the Islands that would refuse your request. Have your heir. Else you go to the Watery Halls to meet your ancestors and your glories are looked over in light of you failing to keep your own line going. Your father and mother would be wholly disappointed if all that was left of their strongest son were tavern songs.
Say what you will, Captain Silvers, but it is my belief that the Harlaw of Grey Garden can be bettered. He carries Nightfall and walks with the Lord Reaper-to-be, and it is as much my duty as it is any of any other Ironborn to see that he is made worthy of both privileges.
You comment on that which you know little of. The Lord Reaper has much and more to do, he cannot be expected to guide each step that his children take. If anything, more responsibility should fall to me in seeing them become fine Ironborn. It is not as if their other uncles provide a suitable example. Wedding and bedding may seem a simple solution to you, Finnion, but grooming the boy for the position would suit just as well.
My mother and father would not discount my actions; my title and all I do with it is directed towards the benefit of the Isles, the Iron Fleet, and the Lord Reaper. It is a mantle I do not take lightly, and until otherwise ordered by Balon, it takes precedence over any self-centered desire for an heir.
-lays on-
"Do you tire so soon?" The question was not a criticism, but rather uncharacteristically curious. "The sun has not even touched the sea yet." Victarion reclined where he was seated, and rested a gloved hand upon her back.
{⚓} — And some are simply not meant for greatness. He has his knighthood, mayhaps that is enough for him. He is heir to Grey Garden, he needs not squabble with anyone over that, and it will earn him a pretty rock wife from any House of the same prestige. If he doesn’t want to risk scaring his pretty face or rending his fancy ship by reaving he does not need too, the choice is wholly his- regardless of what you think he should be.
Someone must chide you for it. The Lord Reaper has his wife and his sons. You have your ships. But the second born of Balon takes more after the crow than his own sire. Would you see your position given to him? Hand over the reigns of the Lord Captain to that nephew? I make no attempt to coerce you, Victarion, but you will not be young and strong forever. What good are the banners you capture and the reaving tales you hold so dear if you have no children to listen aptly and look upon with eyes keen for that same glory.
It does not sit well with me, and it ought not sit well with him either. Imagine what Lord Theomore would say if he could look up at his descendants: a book-lover, a bent old man and a dandy. Let him live his life then, it will earn him no renown.
Maron must needs grow up. Just like his brother must as well. Balon won't grant him the title if he is not deserving of it, and if Balon does name him the next Lord Captain, then I have no reason to disagree. If you are so intent on having me take a wife, who then will it be? The next one to make eyes at me, perhaps? I may not be young and strong forever, but, Drowned God willing, I will be dead before I am old. I can share my glory with my father, and his father before him.
Is it weird of me to want a Victarion - Maegor the Cruel BroTP?
Don't answer that.
Just indulge me.
Victarion "Thinks He's Hatched Clever Plans But Really Can Never Have Nice Things" Greyjoy
{⚓} — Unlike you I have no qualms with the Farwynds. However, I am one of your better Captain’s and sending me to oversee ship repairs instead of sailing with the fleet would seem a terrible waste of my skill. And whose going to affectionately bother you and save your behind from your own poor choices in my absence?
Perhaps you are right, and it would be wasteful. It would be best if you remain in the Lordsport, and took some of the younger Ironborn as oarsmen, that you might condition them to be as capable as yourself. The Botley's second son and my niece seem good candidates.
{⚓} — It is the way of the younger folk, Lord Captain, most simply do not embrace the Old Way until they are older. Not all are as moved by the stories of Dalton and Dagon as you. I am certain his mother tells him all sorts of tales of the frippery of the Greenlands as well, as he did go off to chase a knighthood. Perhaps now he will be more inclined to be a warrior.
…You can resent them all you wish. You would do well to consider his methods as your lack of rock wife and, more importantly, heirs is quite a favored topic among the old reavers. A man as great as you with no son to teach, very disappointing. Harras would have no such issue….
If those born of the Isles do not aspire to the ideals of their forebears at an early age, then much of their potential will have been wasted when they become older. It is no accident that the greatest of us started pulling oars and reaving at a young age. Even the Reader could not dispute that. Harras will have to learn more than chivalry and conduct if he wishes to fight well aboard his new, extravagant ship.
I did not ask for your chiding on this matter, Finnion, and I do not need it. The Lord Reaper must needs a wife and sons, the Lord Captain needs only his ships. Harras can sire soft sons on soft wives, and teach them to be soft until he dies of old age, but I will not do so until I deem it necessary. And certainly not by the leave of your coercion.
"A captain who only gained prestige over the capture of an unarmed girl,” she countered blithely, tone at odds with the tension etched in the lines of her jaw. “It seems you owe a great deal of your power to me — does that not allow me a few privileges, as it clearly has not earned me respect?”
"You know nothing of the sum of my prestige."
It was less of a retort than it was a sour reminder to himself. Those outside the Iron Islands knew him only for his defeat in the waters of Fair Isle, if they knew his name at all. He glanced over his shoulder to see how close any of his crewmen were to the pair.
"If I were wiser," he said, somewhat hushed, "I would cast you and your damnable wyrms into the sea as an offering to the Drowned God. On wings or legs, dragons have only ever been the bane of the Ironborn." His crew had iterated the same feelings as well, but he did not want to feed their superstitious hatred of their chattel. It is not my decision to do away with them, he knew, but he would not allow her the satisfaction of knowing it as well.
"You overvalue yourself, Stormborn," he finished. "The only shore you will see is that of Pyke. You belong to me."
Petition to send a certain captain in the Iron Fleet to oversee ship repairs on the Lonely Light for the next year.
A corner of her mouth pulls up, yet the gesture is entirely barren of humor. Her own gaze is matched against his, unflinching beneath such a dark stare.
"It was not a request, captain. I am going to shore.”
Victarion's eyes bored into her defiance in that moment, wishing he could command silence with a glance in the way the Damphair was wont to do. He became aware of a rumbling sound, only to realize that it was his teeth grinding against each other.
"You are not the captain here," he finally told her, "you are the captive. You have no privileges aboard my ship, woman, save the ones I allow you."
Excuse you lady I'm as honest as the day is long
{⚓} — Now, Lord Captain, you held your own against the Ironmaker as a boy. Fought and defeated your brother in the training ring. Wielded steel against your sire, Drowned God rest his soul, and came out the victor. You are an example of all the greatness a Greyjoy can posses… There are few on these Islands whom could stand against you, and a half greenlander boy from the House of which the Reader hails is not among them. One might start to think you hold some jealousy towards him for how much you seek him out to teach him…… One might also begin to think you are trying to steal the attention of those very women. Show them what a true, virile, ironborn male you are. Hmmm?
Perhaps it is as you say. With a Harlaw sire and a greenlander mother, the manchild was sentenced to this fate. Still, it would not kill him to try to embrace the Old Way more than he does.
...
I resent your words, Captain Silvers. It is not I who capers about the isles to win the favor of those maidens. At any rate, if it is the Knight of Grey Garden that they prize so highly, I would want no part of their misplaced sensibilities.
The captain stood motionless for a long string of moments before he cast a gaze forth, heavy with distaste.
"No."
{⚓} — Out of his element I would agree, the Islands are no place for fanciful birds but.. I doubt his strength has much to do with it. He fares well against others his own age and size, it only seems to be when he fights against a certain kraken that he finds himself in the dirt. A kraken that derives a great deal of pleasure of putting him there- especially when Harlaw’s fawning womenfolk are about.
Again, I say he might not find himself there if he placed less import on his clothes. I cannot be faulted for trying to teach him this lesson often. Do not broach the subject of those women. Their heads are full of seafoam if they think of him as a true Ironborn.
