In which Nick Carraway develops a parasocial codependency with Gatsby—an aspiring couturier with a fabricated identity— until control shifts within New York’s criminal underworld and a deadly, reignited obsession with a former starlet shakes Gatsby’s grip on reality, thus threatening Nick’s ideal American muse.

Were you inspired by the interpretation (one I noticed/formed after reading the book 8 times in a row. I wish I was kidding.) of Jay Gatsby being a poc (possibly white passing) in your design of him in your retelling?

Nah- I mentioned in a previous ask I don’t really read or look at other Gatsby retellings. In general I know people have floated him being Native American or Black/mixed. Not many SouthEast Asian or of Arabic descent Gatsbys that I know of

To me, I just always thought of him as not being 100% White (whether that be White passing or a man of color in some way or another particularly given his struggle to get to where he ended up and it being an migrant boom time period) despite growing up with Leo!2013 Gatsby and drawing him a lot.

My design was based off Dev Patel at first but later was influenced by Tamino Amir and Sendhil Ramamurthy til I morphed them kinda and made him lowkey a bear lol (He’s fit but also he can actually EAT for once in his life without worry and he seems like an over indulger)

It was an over the course of 5ish years labor of love to settle on his look

Dev>Tamino>Sendhil (Sendhil is like very spot on to who I imagine Gatsby as but just thinner. The Sendhil smile IS Gatsby’s smile to me)

This whole project is really cool and I can’t wait to read it!! What are your opinions on other retellings or versions of The Great Gatsby like Self Made Boys and The Great Gatsby Musical? Do you have a favorite?

Tbh I dont keep up with other Gatsby retelling stuff. Im aware book retellings exist and do get shown/recommended them by others but nah I never look into any.

Half because I dont want someone else’s ideas to influence my own and the other half cause I honestly dont care to seek any out (Except the Gatsby Musical- I do want to see that at some point! Im the type of person that wont listen to the soundtrack til after Ive seen the show so I really know nothing about it aside from like tiktok sounds Ive come across)
