HE’S SEEN HER with his own two eyes ( held her in his arms, felt her heart beat against his chest ) but every time someone says ‘ice is back’, it’s like being plunged into ice water– a shock to his system. but like carol points out, not nearly as big of a shock as it probably is for tora. “disorienting… s’ a good word for it,” he pauses, chewing on his bottom lip for a second before clearing his throat, “it’s a lot ta take in.” 

‘ how is she faring? ’ though she assumes she would have heard if she wasn’t faring well. it would have been the talk of the superhero community, though to be fair it already damn near was. at least, in the circles carol populated. revival was never a thing to be taken lightly.

   “ you should come visit more, ” mera agrees, and there’s almost a laugh in there.  something lilting and light and so unlike her usual tone.  “ atlantis is…atlantis.  beautiful and inspiring, difficult and cold.  complicated is the best word, i suppose. ” 

carol closes the space between them just a hair more, a fraction of a small step, drawn in by the sound of light in mera’s voice. a siren’s song if there ever was one. ‘ i don’t think there’s anywhere living that isn’t complicated. ’

    “ more business, ” mera confides, “ arthur was needed in atlantis, so i’m here.  trying to gently explain to idiots that none of us actually talks to fish. ”  she tilts her head as she observes carol’s posture.  mera’s not the most standoffish person in the world, so she tries to ease whatever discomfort carol is feeling by drifting just a step closer.  “ i agree.  i should probably apologize for not keeping in contact more. ”

‘ is that why you’re...’ carol gestured loosely to the lake, where the waves still rippled in the aftermath of mera’s magic. she smiled a little as mera took a step closer, fingers sliding absently around the edge of her ring. a smile pulled just slightly wider at her cheeks. ‘ no. i’m just as at fault. i should... come visit more. how is atlantis? ’

   the stillness is unsettling, no doubt, because it is unnatural.  when mera is on land, she feels constantly poised for disaster.  which perhaps has something to do with the fact that she very rarely comes surface-side unless it is for a battle that must be fought.  but then there’s carol, who seems regal and beautiful and unflinching all at once, too.  but where mera is all edges, so sharp you could cut yourself, there’s something warmer and softer about carol.  not weak, but – perhaps more flexible.  it’s enviable.  

         the smile that flits across mera’s face, just barely pulling at the edge of her lips, is surprisingly fond.  “ no need for the formalities with me, your highness. ” 

‘ what brings you to the surface? ’ though she can guess, with the utter stillness that has encompassed the fluid beauty before her, that it isn’t enough to keep her attention or actually warrant her presence. she leans forward, catches herself and draws back. this is hardly the time to search through impulses of that capacity. a safe distance apart, she settles on a half-grin. ‘ it has been entirely too long. ’

barry was not known for being a ‘super chill and totally cool person’ (despite how often he tried to submit that he was). if anyone saw how he acted in front of carol ferris, they would not only agree with that statement, but perhaps suggest that maybe he was known for specifically not being ‘super chill and totally cool’. “hi carol,” he said, with a very real smile that melted into a very real awkward panic when the entire point of his visit suddenly fell out his head. there was a quick moment of silence before he cleared his throat “—uh, you do, actually,” he said, shaking off his minor stall. “we’re looking into the league of assassins and batman is uh, doing whatever batmans do in this situation, and superman is busy with metropolis so they sent, ah, me.” he pointed to himself, as if that hadn’t been clear by his presence and his subsequent explanation. “are you feeling alright?” he asked, because he wanted to make sure—not as a representative for the league but as someone who cared whether she was or not. 

of course. carol’s expression sours lightly, the reminder of her unfortunate case of damsel in distress unwelcome and uncalled for. barry was nice enough, a good man with good intentions, but he was also barry. and that made it doubly uncomfortable. carol’s fingers tightened around the pen in her hand, nails digging sharper and sharper into her skin until the pain was more distracting than the reminder of the previous month’s... grievances. ‘ i feel fine, mr. allen. thank you for your concern. ’ it seemed genuine, and she knew that perhaps the professional tone was unnecessary, but it was her defense mechanism. she gestured to the seat across from her openly. he might as well sit if they were going to talk. ‘ what do you want to know? ’

“ me? crash a plane? ” he feigns a look of innocence, because what’s the point in denying it? carol would have already seen the incident reports. hal’s good at what he does—if a plane went down, he did damn near the impossible to keep it afloat. he’s not the engineer here; its system failures aren’t his fault. “ you’re welcome, by the way, for you know. staying alive. anyway, get the client to pay for it, isn’t that their job? ” he offers her a sly grin, not unlike one he might’ve years and years ago. “ but i’ll forgive you for putting my life at risk if you take me out to lunch. ”

if anyone asked carol would deny it vehemently, but sometimes looking at hal is hard. there’s so much history. so much weight to his name and his existence. he is the life she once thought was guaranteed. he’s also her pilot--and her pilot who has found another malfunction in another plane that her investors will insist on testing again, costing her the life or another pilot and more money and--christ. the more she thinks about it, the more her head spins. carol cards her fingers through her hair. ‘ how kind of you. ’

‘ i hear ice is back. ’ for a moment, carol isn’t sure what else to say. should she congratulate him? leave it be? she settles for realism, turns her attention to the city below them and just thinks for a moment. ‘ i’m sure that’s disorienting for her. ’

‘ barry. hi. ’ recovering from the kind of surprise and awkwardness that slips between them takes a beat, maybe two, but in a matter of seconds she’s pulled a convincing mask onto her face and plastered on a smile that’s two parts convincing enough and one part genuine. pull it together, carol. it’s just barry. ‘ what brings you to this neck of the woods? ’

‘ you didn’t crash another one of my planes, did you? ’ carol looks up at him over the glasses perched on the end of her nose, brows quirked, a ghost of a smile on her lips. if she takes a moment to look him over, who can blame her? they were once best friends... once so much more. ‘ because i really can’t afford to keep replacing them. ’

there’s a stillness about her that’s unsettling. though, when carol considers how she feels when she’s stuck on land she guesses she can understand. there’s nothing like quite like being landlocked, stuck on your own two feet, when it’s so far from your comfort zone. and mera--god, even on land mera is a visible force to be reckoned with, beautiful and violent without moving a muscle. once, the star sapphire didn’t know that was possible. to be regal and violent and beautiful and terrifying all at once. she’d been so very wrong. 

‘ your highness. ’ a small curtsy, a teasing smile.
