The plan was simple; stop staring at that email that felt like it was burned into the pixels of his laptop screen, take his sketchbook to the library and finish up the last of his figure drawing. He grabbed his bag from where it was sitting slung across his desk chair, grabbed an eraser that wasn’t rock hard from disuse, and turned his headphones up loud enough so that the outside world was a distant hum.
It was working too, until the first call from that unidentified number. He answered it, ready to tell some telemarketer where they could get off, when he heard that voice. He hung up and continued his walk at a faster pace, hands balled into fists in the pockets of his jacket. It called again, this time he didn’t answer. The third time it called, he was through the doors of the library, and was distracted by a familiar voice calling to him.
“Oh yeah, I know you.” He said dumbly, pulling his earbuds out of his ears and letting them rest around his neck. “You’re one of the Vixens.”
He ran a finger down the worn leather edge of his sketchbook and sighed, gnawing on his bottom lip while he debated what he was going to say next. He had to get these drawings finished, and maybe it would be good to take his mind off of his phone for a while.
“Hey, this is going to sound weird, but would you mind if I drew you? For a class, not in a creepy sort of ‘gonna send you these in your mailbox a week later with a lock of hair way’.”
Violeta normally didn’t hang out with many people because she didn’t have much extra time on her hands. If she wasn’t studying, she was practicing. Her entire days seemed to be planned out for her. Occasionally, people were able to pull her away from her studies. Mostly a couple of the Vixens like Lukas were the main people able to pull her away from her books. It wasn’t that she was not very social – Violeta was social by nature. However, she also knew that her studies were important as well. Maybe one day, she could have more time on her hands. She just loved having every second planned out.
Hanging out with the Foxes wasn’t something she did often. She had a couple of people that she liked on the team and would hang out with, but other than those, she tended to just talk to them every so often. She wondered if any of them would actually let her hang with them over the holidays, or if she could ask one of the Vixens to tag along with them this holiday. Either way, it was nice to see a familiar face.
Violeta smiled at the boy in front of her. She turned her head at his question, and comment afterwards. Draw her? It was an awkward question, and comment, but maybe it would be fun. She wondered if he was actually talented or if he just pretended like he was. Violeta had no artistic talent in any way. She tried and every time she failed.
❝Yeah, I’m Violeta,❞ she smiled, formally introducing herself. ❝Draw me? Well, I don’t have anything to do, so I guess that would be alright. Are you an artist?❞ It was a stupid question, but if it was just for a class then maybe he was just taking the class for no reason other than the experience. It sounded like it might be fun. ❝Well, I would hope not. I think I’d probably Taser you before you got anywhere near my hair.❞ It was a joke…. Sort of. ❝That was a joke, but just so you know. I am not afraid to kick your ass if you try anything creepy.❞
