❤ Solar blessings abound in this subtly powerful herbal oil pulsating with a garnet glow ❤
With its deep solar affinity, the St. John's Wort (hypericum perforatum) was in full flower and at peak medicinal potency when it was gathered by my daughter, my sister, and myself on the Summer Solstice 2012 in Nevada City, California.
Perhaps you have heard of taking this plant in pill or tincture form to help with depression; its bright & happy sunshine medicine is just as strong in oil form. It is true Sunshine In A Bottle, whether you're taking it internally or applying it externally :-)
Oiling the body is the quickest, most powerful way to bring on full body relaxation (barring strong pharmaceuticals, of course), and that is how I tend to use this oil. My nervous system gets overwhelmed by day-to-day life, and my body holds all of that stress as muscular tension. Every few nights I oil my entire body with St. John's Wort oil, and it immediately drops me into a peaceful, alpha-brain-wave state of being. I also love to rub into onto my young daughter's feet or back when she is wound up after a long day.
Specific to the nervous system, this oil deeply penetrates to warm and relax the nerves and their surrounding tissues. According to herbalist Kylie Loynd, "It strengthens and nourishes nerves, penetrating swiftly to bring nearly instant relief. St. John's wort is also a great treatment for long-carried nerve damage from old wounds and surgeries."
Called by some herbalists "the chiropractor's herb", it is an aid to yoga, massage, and general relaxation/body resetting techniques. The warming properties (which you can feel immediately) of this medicine are especially helpful on cold winter nights.
It can also be used as one would use Arnica oil or gel- on bumps, bruises, sprains, etc. I always carry a bottle around with me for first aid. Another important use for St. John's Wort oil is for surface burns. You don't want to oil a deep burn, but a small kitchen burn benefits immensely from application of this oil. It is also fabulous to use after a long day in the sun to replenish the skin and to temper any sunburn. Some folks even apply it BEFORE a day in the sun, preferring it to commercial sunscreen. There is no scientific evidence that I know of supporting its use as a sunblock, but it is a traditional use of this medicine that I have also enjoyed.
The plant was steeped in organic olive oil from the June new moon (which just happened to fall on the Solstice this year) to the July new moon. Each bottle contains 4oz of oil.
