“There!” Evie exclaimed as she scribbled down her phone number and handed the post it note to Violet. “Call me but please don’t go changing your hair colour before, it’s really quite lovely.”

Violet pocketed the Post-It, reminding herself to put the number into her cell phone later. Biting back a giggle at Evie’s request, she nodded. “Of course not. I love my hair, so I’m not changing it anytime soon.”

“Oh, thanks,” Achilles said, shrugging the compliment off with practiced ease.  “It’s a bit of a mouthful, but what can you do?“ 

"Violet’s a great name though.”

On the tip of his tongue is the question, ‘do you attend the church?’, but this isn’t school. He isn’t the same person at the shelter as he is outside so he swallows it down. And he smiles.

“Who’s your favorite?” Achilles asks, indicating the puppies and dogs around them. The one he was paying attention whines a little. Slipping his fingers through the fence again, Achiles wiggles them at the puppy in a 'hello’.

Violet shrugged a shoulder, leaning down to fill a pug puppy’s bright red bowl with food and the matching bowl with water. Scratching affectionately at the pug’s ears, she responded, “It’s a decent name, I suppose. Yours is a lot better.”

“Who’s my friend? How can I choose?” She laughed, but it was completely true. All of the dogs were sweet and playful and adorable, and she adored them all equally. “Well, I like this little guy. He’s a sweetheart.” She gestured towards the pug that was licking gently at her hand. “What about you? Who’s your favorite?”

“Do you have a pen and some paper? I’ll write down my number and then you can call me when you’re available.” Evie suggested, smiling back at Violet. Her eyes never left the woman’s hair for as pretty as she was, it was really that particular feature that caught the eye.

Violet nodded before digging into her purse, digging out a blue ballpoint pen and some Post-It notes. Handing both over to Evie, she noticed the girl staring at her hair but didn’t bother to question why. It was eye-catching, that was all.

I wasn’t asking about the “normal” kids. I couldn’t care any less about the kids that go trick-or-treating and then go home to pray so Satan doesn’t think they’re converting. I’m asking about the others.

Wind Gap being the town that it is, I’m sure there’s some kids who chant spells or whatever on Halloween night, but I’ve never met any. Sorry.

“Thanks.” Evie said, then stepping aside a few steps she took two long drags from the lit cigarette, eyes closed in bliss. She knew just how those little habits of hers tended to put her parents on edge and she had taken to smoking and drinking in their vicinity out of pure spite but now that she lived in Wind Gap alone, now that they had taken their bags and hoped on back to whatever hellhole they’d crawled out of, she did so because it helped her relax. A few drops of whiskey and she felt loose and carefree, euphoric at time she had too much. They weren’t quite addictions but they did fuel her fire when nothing else could. “I don’t text but I can call you. I do have to warn you, portrait painting takes quite a bit of time and patience. You’re looking at spending hours with me here. Still tempted?” She asked, a smirk slowly blooming onto her lips.

“No problem,” she replied politely, toying with the edge of her shirt sleeve for a moment for her gaze met Evie’s once again. “Okay,” she said softly, nodding and then smiling nervously at Evie’s next comment. “Yeah - uh, that’d be fine. I’m a patient person.” She usually was, at least. Or she could be when she tried hard enough.

Good, I’m glad it’s safe with you. Michael Cera, I think. He’s a trippy looking dude, but funny. I’m sure in an animated world, that would be something they’d excel at, maybe even like intensify. 

Yeah, you got it right.

Hmm, I suppose he’s a bit funny. Yeah, probably. I’d want them to make me badass and all that, even thought that’s not even close to true in reality. But whatever.

Most of the kids have a normal Halloween - you know, candy, cute costumes, trick-or-treating, that kind of stuff - but most of the adults think it’s sinful or whatever.

Far too laid-back. That had never been a problem for Renata. In fact, some had encouraged her to have a little bit more of a childhood for her to remember when she was older, as she wanted the entire world HANDED to her on a silver platter. She had wanted to ensnare the mind and see others unravel at her fingertips; such things happened when she grew up watching from the sidelines, dying to be replacing those onstage with her own person and writing. “Nonsense. We all have a fire burning within us; it just takes a little coercion for it to get pulled out.”

She shook her head, long and slow and dramatic. “HUNDREDS of dollars. I remember those days. It was a few pounds - Euros -  here and there, but you could mostly borrow or share them with some classmates and get on just fine. I can’t believe the system here sometimes. It’s just appalling to me.” Her brows quirked upward, although just a little. “Alright, then, bear with me: if you had this money to yourself, not required to purchase the textbooks, what would you spend it on? Titles.”

Although Violet knew that she had no metaphorical fire burning within her, knew that she was gentle and soft, she still couldn’t help but love the way Renata put it. She really did have a way with words. 

“It’s very irritating and troublesome,” the blue-haired girl agreed with a tiny smile, “but that’s just the way it is, I suppose. Nothing I can do about it.” Shrugging a slender shoulder, she tapped a manicured fingernail against her chin. “Hmm. I’ve never been a good actress - or even a mediocre one - but I love reading plays. Probably Stop Kiss and a few Shakespeare plays. I like Megan Abbott a lot, so The End of Everything. And I’ve been meaning to get the pretty new Harry Potter editions, so definitely those. What kind of books do you enjoy?” She looked at Renata curiously, waiting for her answer.

“Yeah, that’d be great. This fucking lighter might make me quit smoking out of pure aggravation.” Evie said, placing the cigarette between her lips and handing the lighter over to Violet. It was more than a little strange being this open with a complete stranger and her movements were uncertain, slow. The brunette was self deprived from touching, from simple human connection. She waited for the other to take the lighter from her hand and let out a chuckle at the other’s explanation. “Well it’s a lovely shade. I wonder how it would come out if I were to paint you. Maybe in watercolors.” She said, and really this was as good as a cope out as they came, if her interest in the blue haired beauty was purely artistic, it was a little easier to explain away than another kind of interest. God forbid she actually sought another person’s company.

Biting back a smile at Evie’s dramatic declaration, Violet lit the cigarette with careful precision, handing it back to Evie carefully as not to burn either of them. She was almost pleased that Evie laughed at her confession about why her hair was blue, running a hand through her hair and blushing as Evie complimented her again. “Yeah, uh, that would be pretty cool. Why don’t we trade numbers? You can text me whenever you’re feeling up to it.” A little bold, maybe, but she didn’t care for once.

“It sure suits me better than the name my parents picked for me.” Evie said, a grimace stretched over her lips just thinking of her birth name. Evelyn. So gaudy, so old fashioned and nothing like her. It was as if even on the day she was born her own parents weren’t able to muster enough of a connection to her to give her a worthy name. “It’s nice to meet you too.” She said pulling out a cigarette from her bag. “Why the blue hair?” she asked à propos of nothing, as she struggled to light the cigarette with her old lightener.

Noticing that Evie was having trouble with her cigarette lighter, she held out a hand to her. “Want me to try lighting it for you?” she questioned softly, barely even noticing the question about her hair until a few moments later. “Oh,” she said with a laugh. “I had a rebellious phase in junior year. I used to have this long, gorgeous brown hair, but my mom and I were arguing a lot - about what, I don’t remember - so I just chopped my hair off and dyed it blue to spite her.” A tiny smile tugged at the corners of her pink lips. “I was kind of a bitch back in junior year, but I like the blue hair a lot, and my mom eventually accepted it.”

“Yeah, they can be.” Especially here, loaded up with hormones and a point to prove. Other people were simply intimidating in their sheer perfection. Like Ariel. “Why would you even want any other houses?” A grin. “Oh shoot, I’m probably running late for biology. Do you have class?”

Violet bit back a smile before responding, “No - I’m actually not a student here anymore. I graduated a few years ago. I was just coming by to pick up some work for my little sister, since she has mono and is going to be out for at least two weeks.” She didn’t know why she felt the need to explain. “Have fun in bio, though. Who do you have?”

It was these honest and slight-blossoming moments that Renata lived for. She felt swollen in her chest, as though she had just been delivered the most beneficial news, as though she had just been given the copy of her first published screenplay all over again.

“Nonetheless, I do offer my apologies for it. Hopefully some enlightening conversation will be an adequate repayment. Ambition starts as little more than - what’s that Biblical phrase? - the planting of a mustard seed. And sometimes, that’s all it takes. Attending college is substantial in and of itself.” She buttoned the latch on the bag and rubbed her gloves across the top of it. “Entirely too true. This world wants us to be young, vibrant, educated - then doesn’t allow for the resources to be affordable. It was difficult enough for me; I can’t imagine how it is now.”

Violet enjoyed the brunette’s manner of speaking, although, at first, it was an adjustment from the more casual speech that her ears were used to. She sounded quite well-educated and intelligent, although one could never tell. “Yes, hopefully,” she replied with a small smile. “Well, I’m glad you think that. My parents think that I’m far too laid-back for my own good - it’s good to hear that someone thinks that I have at least a bit of ambition in me.”

Shifting the heavy bag from one shoulder to the other, she nodded in agreement. “Seriously! And it’s gotten worse - I mean, being expected to pay hundreds of dollars for one textbook that the professor rarely actually assigns work in is ridiculous. But I suppose that’s just how the school system works.” She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “And to think that I could be spending some of that money on books that I actually want to read.”

What are the odds, I guess I am a little psychic or something. Promise not to tell if I swear I’ll only use it for good? It does, it’s like a rock star name, something from Scott Pilgrim. You could be animated. Which would be killer.

Oh, I get what you’re saying - but I agree, we probably shouldn’t get into it, considering that Wind Gap is well, Wind Gap. 

Of course not. I would never reveal this wonderful secret of yours. Hmm, I’ve actually never read Scott Pilgrim or seen the movie - you know, the one with the weird-looking white guy. Michael Something. But I would love to be animated, as long as they made sure that my hair was just as blue as it actually is.
