Ankh is an Egyptian hieroglyph, symbol of long life. The pharaohs received an amulet in the form of an ankh at birth, the symbol of eternal life. Also the ankh was used for protection against evil spirits. Some theories claim that the ankh represented the sunrise. The loop symbolizing the sun, the horizontal line symbolizing the horizon, and the vertical line symbolizing the trajectory of the sun (the union between Heaven and Earth). The Ankh not only symbolizes Eternal Life (both material and spiritual life), but also represents the power to give and sustain life. It is generally associated with material things such as water (which the Egyptians considered capable of regenerating life), air, sun and gods. Over time, the Ankh has become the symbol of Life and Immortality, of the Universe, of power, of water and of life.
