Sometime soon, it's a bit up in the air as to when, I will return to doing what I love, with a few more responsibilities, and with a much larger paycheck. When that happens I will transition from a good job to a great job, and make literally double on each paycheck than I do now in part because the company will cover my insurance as well. I also won some tickets to a show tonight that I'm very excited about, and found out that I received $100 more on my paycheck from my part time job than I thought I was going to get meaning I can buy groceries for next week. And it's Friday. Today is a good day for me and I wish everyone many many days like this.
Did I mention they also spent a portion of the trip listening to the most smug one read Beowulf aloud? I'm imagining that under their turtleneck sweaters, I kid you not, they lead really vanilla lives.
It took SEVEN hours to get from NYC to Boston. SEVEN. traffic crawled all the way to just outside Boston city limits. And of course I'm on a bus where the outlets don't work. And my phone is dying. And the college students in front of me become fast friends in an instant and decide to hold the most pretentious discourse on Nietzsche and freedom and the struggle of freedom, but what is freedom really, and oh my goodness will you please shove a bag of dicks in your collective mouth so I don't have to convulse from proximity to your fuckwit babble and smugness? I am entirely grateful for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay , which is a delightful and riveting read, and the fact that my Broadway playlist lasts for more than seven hours. Yes, yes it does, and I'm proud of the fact.
love-and-radiation The system forces you to choose one whether you want to or not. It can be Dr, Madam, Admiral, Mrs, or whatever. It's so that when you're doing a big mailing it will provide you with: Dr. Casey Whatsmygender if Casey is in the system with Dr as the prefix. It will also provide Dr. Whatsmygender if you want to say it that way.
Is there a nongendered polite salutation in writing? I mean, instead of choosing between Mr. Ms. or Mrs. is there something I can use? I get very agitated when I have to assign someone a gender in our donor database and must choose one of the above. And I usually default to guessing off of their name, which also irks me because I don't want to rely on stereotypical binary deductions. I will not enforce gender identification on an individual!
The Pushcart War had a profound impact on me; when I was a kid I devoured it several times, and I’ve carried it deep inside me ever since. The book gave me a point of entrance—my first, I imagine—into the world of resistance to political and economic injustice and chicanery. It made opposition, even non-violent civil disobedience, seem fun and right and necessary and heroic, and something even someone as powerless as a kid could and should undertake.

The New York Review Children’s Collection 50th Anniversary edition of Jean Merrill’s classic The Pushcart War, illustrated by Ronni Solbert, hits bookstore shelves this week!
I got chastised today for using the word "sublime" in an email to the Chairs of our Board (as in, "hope your summer has been restful and sublime.")
A couple beers and some homemade cookies in me and rain so heavy it's obscuring the view across the bay and the sound of it on the roof...multiple factors helping me to really relax for today.
The Google trend for the search query “quadratic formula”.
It repeats in the same pattern every year. Down in summer, up in September, down again in December and up again in spring time before going down again in the summer. And so it goes on forever.

You're not anti-social, you're selectively social.

I've been doing some freelance work for a circus nonprofit and so far have hit several home runs. Hoping that this continues.
fell asleep on the train and woke up when I accidentally toppled into some kid sitting next to me. Been up since 6am and working trapeze since 7:30 so it's not uncommon for me to nap on the train these days. But then the kid poked his mother and out of the corner of my eye I saw him pointing to me and whisper something derisive. I went back to sleep.
Had the choice to either do laundry or get a haircut this morning before work. Decided on the latter but when I got to the barber there was an hour and a half wait and I didn't have that long before work so no haircut. So I walked through the west village where a bunch of Pride things were happening. I've never felt very prideful, particularly on Pride. Instead I felt down and kinda lonely (my boyfriend is at a funeral today). So all this is to say that I wasted my morning on the wrong choice, meaning I accomplished neither task, and then felt bad about myself all before noon. It's been ridiculously productive don't you think?
We are at a world cup viewing party and I cannot help but practice math skills with the host's young daughter.
When I was a kid I thought your 20s were supposed to be fun, not filled with perpetual anxiety about financial stability and constantly feeling like an unaccomplished piece of shit.
Sometimes it's nice to take your headphones out of your ears and listen to the world as you walk down the streets. Particularly when it's Friday, the rain is slowly falling and you get to experience some wonderful things. For example a group of nude bicyclists riding along screaming "more ass, less gas" and "love your body" or a couple on a date walking quickly through the rain sharing a cloak that's definitely too small for two but hearing her go, "it's cool, I feel like we're in Harry Potter." Makes you happy to be alive and well, and reminds you that the small things in life can give you joy even when the big things are getting you down.
