Breaking from my brand for a sec (or rather, expanding it, perhaps), I gotta give Fall Guy some love. That movie had no right to be that CLEVER. I was expecting a popcorn action romcom, not a thoughtful FILM 1. in which Ryan Gosling point-blank shames The Academy for not having a category for stuntpeople, 2. which reminds us that carbs are not the devil ("CARBS! Your brain runs on glucose, Tom. You NEED to eat CARBS!), 3. that pokes blatant fun at Tom Cruise (Tom Ry(i)der? come on...), and 4. that obviously and subtlely references / throws love at more '70s/'80s/'90s movies / tv shows than I can ever hope to completely identify (if somebody has compiled that list, I NEED to see it!!). And also goes so hard on showing us how action scenes are done and what they take (and film production overall, honestly). I'm just so surprised and impressed. What a neat film. This was a movie made by people who love making movies and so very much want to show us outsiders what it takes and why they love it so much, and I confess, I am convinced. I get it now. I will see movies differently now, because of this film. Damn right I wanna see the back of the crossstitch - I wanna KNOW what it took to make that! (Also, I think CARBS in RG's voice every time I prepare / eat a meal now, and boy does it make me smile.)
I also love that the key to the romance story is the male lead thinking about emotional vulnerability. It's so good!
