Wolfgang von Trips Diaries
School has long since started again, and I've had a tiring but wonderful time. Lately, I've been terribly forgetful and generally quite "down." There's not much point in keeping this diary. I should really keep two books: one with events, weather, things accomplished, important matters, including political ones, and a completely private one with my thoughts, which don't really come across here. Lately, school has been neglected again. My probation period runs until October 1st.

Back home for three days. It was still nice on Juist. I'm not at all okay with myself again, but I'll tell you about that another time. The weather is quite good now; we're harvesting wheat. Otherwise, things aren't looking good at the farm. It's not profitable. The Maybach is mechanically sound and running. Now at the body shop

...but then, unfortunately, we had to move because it's a nature reserve and a farmer reported us. Now we're in the yard of a house in a housing development. Camp life is incredibly cozy. We're getting along well with each other. The waves have been wonderful the last few days.

We've been here for four days. Bob, Dirk, Udo, Reinhard, Flitzi, and I. First, we camped in the dunes; it was wonderful. Without a soul...

Loss of wallet with about 27.00 DM. Of Dad's 50.00 DM, 18.00 are left.

Wolfgang von Trips Diaries
Didn't go to school, was at a medical ball yesterday. I met the person I met at Carnival in 1947.
A letter from Mother. She was here and isn't happy with me. She says I'm not modest, pale to the core, not fresh and cheerful, and have no respect for my age... Yes, that's given me pause for thought, and I haven't been happy with myself for a long time. I've lost a lot of my energy, my fresh naturalness, etc., here. But I don't want to believe what Mother says about my bland selfishness. I resist it. I have to change. I need to become more self-important. I look bad, she's been saying almost constantly lately. I'm also kind of strange. Sometimes I don't feel quite well. Right now, I'm okay. So, this letter. I've been reading it all day, a picture is emerging... if that's how I am... well, thanks a lot. A lot of things may seem that way to the outside world, but they're not really like that at all. Some things are just Mother's doing.

It didn't rain yesterday, for once. It's raining again today, it's been raining for weeks. On July 3, I lost my wallet at Godesberg station with 25 DM, passport, driver's license, francs, pictures, and stamps. I noticed it right after the train left and already reported it in Bonn. Grandma got very old.

Tons of rain and cold, that's how July begins, chemistry test.
Didn't have a clue. Another fiasco.

Was a bit strange for a few days, terribly weak, I think heart.
Cart on generator, but it'll soon be broken. I made 12 DM selling 80 empty bottles I got from Mrs. Spaus!!! Great.
My cash balance looks good

It was freezing cold for a few days, but it's a bit warmer now. I gave my presentation on Hans Sachs today. Nick thought it was very good and said I have a real talent for it as he believes he can see from the lecture, but I wouldn't exploit them. He asked the class what the difference was between me and Hans Sachs. He answered himself:
Hans Sachs exploited his talent!

I'm on another roll; the currency reform has reawakened me. I'm racking my brains for ways to make money. The days of small, opportunistic deals are over. I'm feeling somewhat enterprising.

Currency reform yesterday!!! Everyone received 40 DM. The outlook is bleak. I don't know how things will turn out. I can't afford anything anymore. I don't know if I'll be able to pay my hours. I hope the shop does well enough for us to be profitable. I'm feeling a bit pessimistic and depressed at the moment. But there are also some positive aspects: We were at the tournament in Bedburg. I have a bit of a cough.

We have a new religion teacher, he comes from a posting in East Prussia. He's had a lot of experience with Russians, he's fresh and interesting. He also enjoys nature and is a hunter. He's cooled down. I have pain in my wisdom tooth

The weather was beautiful and very warm until Monday. I spent all of last week and the weekend on and in the Rhine. But I apparently caught a cold one night, since I was lying on the bed naked. Mother was here yesterday. The car is still running on gasoline. Everyone's talking about the currency reform; it's supposed to come now.

Very warm, went swimming. My tooth still hurts. Swallowing Treupel. Not up for discussion. I'm listening to a discussion on the radio about the pros and cons of socialization in the Ruhr area between politicians from the CDU, the Centre Party, the FDP, and the KPD. It's very interesting. They're arguing stupidly. One talks about people's freedom, the other wants to destroy those responsible for armaments. They're talking about war criminals and "corporate bosses." Stupid hatred of the little man. Short-sighted fanatics.

Thursday: Car home. Parents back from Munich. Currency reform isn't far off now, they'll certainly lose a lot.
Friday: Tooth finally pulled, the second one in my life. Freezing cold outside, freezing in my apartment.
Sunday: Home.
