Claranet Buys UK Cloud Computing Star

Claranet has acquired UK cloud computing firm Star for £55 million to expand its core businesses. According to Claranet, the purchase of STH Limited, and its subsidiary Star, will result in Claranet being able to offer a wider product portfolio that ranges from the data center to the desktop. Star customers will be able to use Claranet's pan-European Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering, Virtual Data Center, as well as managed application hosting services. The purchase will see 700 staff serve over 4,500 customers in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

SAP Selects Equinix for Australian Cloud

SAP selects Equinix to host its first cloud solutions for Australian customers in Sydney's Equinix data center. Second data center option will be selected by the end of the year. SAP begins offering SaaS solutions to Australian customers from a caged within Equinix data center in October, 2012. Globally, SAP is looking to consolidate its multi-tenant cloud solutions into two data centers per region.

Interoute Expands its Cloud Services

Interoute Communications is building out its European data centers as demand increases for its cloud services. Interoute's Virtual Data Center enables organizations to create highly dynamic scalable cloud computing services, allowing customers to provision new computing resources in minutes and to select from any of Interoute's VDC enabled data centers in Amsterdam, Berlin, Geneva and London via a fully automated online portal. In Q3 2012, Interoute extended its Virtual Data Center platform into its Berlin facility and prepared its Paris data center for the launch of its innovative solution in Q4. Interoute is also investing in a new state of the art data center in Ghent, Belgium, which will be fully operational in January 2013.

Curenci Selects Visi for Cloud Computing

Minnesota-based online payment platform, Curenci, has selected VISI's ReliaCloud for its cloud computing services. With a need to respond rapidly to demands for services, Curenci was looking for a cloud computing provider that guarantees reliability, security, and provides an overall robust infrastructure. They chose VISI, also of Minnesota, and entered into a three-year agreement. VISI is Minnesota’s leading managed services, cloud computing, and data center services provider. VISI's TIER 3 data center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota has newly installed Cisco, EMC and VMware equipment. The Eden Praire data center is also connected to TDS HMS data centers in Iowa and Wisconsin. Swiftpage has selected ViaWest's KINECTed Cloud computing solutions to manage ongoing hardware upgrades and infrastructure maintenance. Egnyte Announced New Hybrid Cloud File Sharing

Egnyte recently released EgnytePlus, a platform and partnership program aimed at allowing users to create their own cloud-based file sharing infrastructure that integrates with existing IT investments. According to Egnyte, EgnytePlus platform is being released in response to the wave of consumerization sweeping across the business IT world. File sharing is at the forefront of the consumerization trend in business IT, but while many companies have simply adopted one-off consumer file sharing solutions for use by certain end users, the IT department wants a scalable, secure cloud-based platform that can serve the whole enterprise and also integrate with existing on-premises solutions. EgnytePlus lets users add cloud-based tiers including data sharing, replicating and archiving to traditional on-premises storage solutions. In addition, users can perform cloud-based tasks such as real-time online collaboration, file backup and sync and accessing of files from any on-premises or mobile device, from any location.

Walmart Uses OpenStack and Rackspace

Walmart is reportedly consolidating its disparate data analytic systems into one global system and bringing in OpenStack with Rackspace Hosting to help develop the platform. It's expected portion of Walmart's global platform will use OpenStack in private and public cloud configurations. For the public cloud, Rackspace is being used. The consolidation will allow data scientists from Walmart's various web properties to analyze petabytes of real-time customer data and generate insights.

Colt Technology Services Offers VMware vCloud Suite

Colt Technology Services announced the availability of the new VMware vCloud Suite 5.1 data center estate. It is the first service provider to implement VWware vCloud and the most extensive vCloud data center service in Europe. Colt Technology Services is also building on these extended vCloud capabilities by launching complementary backup and disaster recovery services for vCloud, designed specifically to address the needs of its channel partners. The company has also developed a number of complementary services which will enable resellers to build and manage business continuity solutions for their customers. These services will allow Colt’s reseller community to manage backup and restore and disaster recovery for vCloud services.

Intel Unveiled Cloud-enabled NAS Platform

Intel recently introduced two new network-attached storage (NAS) controllers for home and small business users. The NAS platforms can support from two to six drives and can be used to share content in a home or be accessed remotely by mobile devices. It also supports high-speed video processing on up to six hard drives. The Intel NAS platform supports multiple operating systems, including Linux, but typically runs Windows Home Server 2008 R2. The Web-enabled access allows the NAS boxes to act as a personal cloud, letting users access files remotely using a variety of connected devices, including ultrabook computers, smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Hostway Launches Public Cloud in Canada

Hostway announced the launch of its new Vancouver Cloud hosting environment, expanding the company’s public cloud environment for complete coast-to-coast access in North America. The Vancouver, British Columbia facility is the third North American Hostway's data center to come online in less than two years since the company launched its hosted cloud solution in 2010. Vancouver location provides a Canadian cloud option for companies looking to tap into the power of the cloud to save money, enhance performance, scale rapidly and achieve mission-critical disaster preparedness and recovery solutions. Loughborough University Builds Hybrid Cloud

Loughborough University selected hybrid cloud platform as a cost-effective alternative to its legacy data center infrastructure. The hybrid cloud infrastructure, visualized using VMware’s platform, connects into VMware-based cloud infrastructure hosted by IT services partner Logicalis, via the UK’s higher education network JANET. The new hybrid cloud set-up allows Loughborough to scale up its visualized infrastructure when needed, and provides the possibility of migrating entirely to the Logicalis data center in the case of a disaster. The university’s use of cloud services is not limited to the Logicalis platform. It already uses Google Apps, thanks to the web giant’s offer of free services to university students, and cloud-hosted IT service management tool ServiceNow.

National Australia Bank Selects IBM Private Cloud Services

National Australia Bank has selected IBM to develop private cloud service that is aimed at giving improving the company’s flexibility with its IT services. The service would operate on a pay-as-you-go model which will see NAB purchase cloud service on demand from IBM, rather than pay a set ongoing fee for the service.IBM cloud service would host NAB’s collaboration tools, application hosting and system development and testing facilities.

Oracle Builds On-demand Cloud Computing

Oracle announced three new features for its cloud service. The company will add infrastructure as a service to the Oracle Public Cloud, putting the enterprise software company in competition with pioneers Amazon.com Inc. With the announcements, Oracle plunges deeper into cloud computing, now offering computing on demand like utilities deliver electricity. Oracle's cloud will deliver raw computing power, storage and applications for business processes such as human-resources management.

Adobe Launches Cloud Based Mobile Apps

Adobe has rolled out Adobe PhoneGap Build, a service designed for development of cloud based mobile apps. PhoneGap Build features Adobe's Hydration, which is designed to speed up debug and build cycles and automatically notify testers when new versions are available. PhoneGap will also feature a share function that allows group reviews of app prototypes via QR code. It leverages major mobile operating systems such as iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Bada, webOS and Symbian.

Skyscape Cloud Services Wins Goverment Digital Service Contract

Skyscape Cloud Services has signed a contract with Government Digital Service (GDS) as primary contractor for hosting 'gov.uk' websites. The Infrastructure as a Service contract was awarded via the G-Cloud Framework, which enables the rapid sourcing and deployment of secure, low cost utility services to the UK public sector. GDS feels that moving departmental websites on to GOV.UK will also realize significant savings for the taxpayer.

Amazon Web Services Expanding in Japan

Amazon Web Services is opening new availability zone in Japan. The move means that AWS will most likely be adding more data centers to keep up with the steady demand in service it has had since it first began offering its service in Tokyo 18 months ago. Each availability zone can encompass multiple data centers. It is likely AWS could be building new data centers in Japan for its new availability zone, as well as the two it opened since early 2011.
