The project is inspired by the typology of the tower (literal translation of Kula, the name of the venue), which, as an architectural part of the built environment, often becomes a subject of debates. The emergence of a new city tower, or rather a skyscraper (to use the local examples: the ones in New Belgrade, the New Bridge or Belgrade Waterfront), usually leads to some public disagreements. Could it be, that this is because of the phallic, masculine shape of the tower, which, to an extent, presents as threatening to the rest of the urban context (coming out of the city panorama, solitarily standing on its own)?
Translating the symbolic dimensions of architecture to the issues of gender politics, as well as architecture as space and the space taken up by the body, the exhibition aims to “feminize” what we (Voždovačka galerija) see as the macho character of the Tower. By analogy, through the radical action of transformation, we are creating a contrasting environment to the city club life of Cetinjska 15 in Belgrade by bringing in some rural elements and motifs taken from fairytales. Some of these themes are already present in the Tower (Kula): conquering the height, climbing to the top, overcoming obstacles, the hidden attic: our goal is to activate them.
Through installation, sculpture, image and fabricated atmospheres, our contemporary fairytale (Bajka in Serbian) walks the line between “happily ever after” and a different, hauntological kind of ending; the one that could have been good but never happened, which emerges in most horror film plots, but which also illustrates the age of anxiety which has, perhaps, already passed and is now replaced with the age in which living in the moment is imperative.

Projekat je inspirisan kulom kao arhitektonskom tipologijom koja u kontekstu grada često dovodi do nesuglasica i debata. Gradska kula, odnosno soliter, bilo da je u pitanju Novi Beograd, novi most ili Beograd na vodi, u lokalnoj javnosti dovodi do sukoba mišljenja. Mogući odgovor na pitanje “zašto je to tako” je dominantni, falusni, odnosno maskulini oblik kule, koji je u izvesnoj meri preteći u odnosu na ostatak gradskog tkiva (ističe se, izlazi iz panorame, dok usamljeno stoji).
U prevođenju između simbola arhitekture i identiteta roda, kao i arhitekture prostora i prostora tela, izložba nastoji da “oženstveni” ono što mi (Voždovačka galerija) prepoznajemo kao mačo karakter Kule. Analogno radikalnim akcijama transformacije, pravimo kontrast uobičajenom ambijentu kompleksa Cetinjska 15 koji ima urbani karakter gradskog, klupskog života, uvodeći ruralne elemente i pojedine motive iz bajki. Neki od ovih motiva se već sami i nalaze u arhitekturi kule: visoki nedostižni deo “dvorca”, penjanje do vrha, prevazilaženje prepreka, skriveni tavan; naša ideja je da ih aktiviramo.
Kroz instalacije, skulpture, slike i različite ambijente, naša savremena Bajka balansira između “happily ever after” i drugačijeg, hauntološkog ever after; koji je mogao biti dobar al se nikada nije desio, koji se provlači kroz zaplete horor filmova, ali koji i verno oslikava vreme anksioznosti koje je možda i prošlo i postaje vreme u kom se beskrajno insistira na življenju u trenutku.
