Adding led light strips within the stairs would create an amazing lighting effect at night that you wouldnāt notice during the daytime when you donāt need it. If I set up a sensor with a timer it would only come on during a certain time of day and if i walk by. Super efficient. design that would look great
User testing organised
I have organised a user testing with my girlfriendās niece and nephew next weekend to test out my prototypes and to get feedback on how the app should work in terms of targets or gameifying etc. I will take my blue foam prototypes and a fully working model with screen for them to test out. This will give me a good idea of size and form.
Meeting with Jan Vorstius
After the meeting with Sarah, I messaged Jan to ask for his help. Speaking to him, there isnāt a lot that he can offer that would help make the technology any smaller or work any faster. He did offer some advice about making the screen work from the raspberry pi than a plug in the wall.
Meeting with Sarah
Today we had a meeting with Sarah, and she seemed more positive than ever! She recommended I speak to Jan Vorstius, an electrical engineer in the fulton building. He might be able to help condense the circuit boards down to make the whole thing smaller. We agreed that by next Thursday I would have a first full prototype of the form and the same for a working app.
Technology update!
I have finally found a way to get the technology to work. I have managed to run the first prototype of the app on the raspberry pi without the use of the internet and after many emails back and forth, I have managed to get the barcode scanner to recognise different products! But after testing the app without Wi-Fi, it is just as slow as with it. I emailed Axure to ask for different ways to make the app and any other solutions and they provided me with a few alternatives. After around 2 days, I was able to get this system to work. So now I am ready to get the technology going and start designing the app.
New Screen has Arrived!
Finally, my new screen has arrived! Luckily this time, it is touchscreen. I have it up and running and the pi works really well on the 5 inch screen. Progress is finally being made in terms of technology!
Meeting with Chris
Chris came over to speak to me today about my progress and to see how I am getting on. I informed him on where I was and explained how I was struggling to decide on what technology to use. He advised me to explore the avenues of each and see what worked best.
I also discussed with him about the scanner being built in or detachable. I am going to prototype each and test them with my user next week. Overall Chris seemed happy with my progress.
Meeting with Classmates
This morning, a few of my classmates and I had a discussion about our projects and gave each other feedback. The feedback was in depth but also gave different perspectives than the lecturers. This was good because it was a more personal discussion with our peers than a more formal talk with the lecturers. I was advised to keep the technology down to a minimum and to make a separate product on the side like a basket that they could carry the products around the shop. While this is a good idea, I think it would complicate the idea and take away from the actual concept. Other feedback was to make the actual āappā more fun for kids and have targets or goals to work towards. The session proved to be useful and I have more ideas to work with.
Device Prototyping
Today I spent the day making quick blue foam and card models of different forms that my device could take. This allowed me to make simple shapes in a very quick time. Touching them up with a bit of sandpaper and you get an idea what they would feel like.

Sketching forms
Today I spent my time sketching different forms that the device could take. I will colour it later, as Iāve ordered 36 Pro Markers. Tomorrow I will begin to prototype these ideas from card, blue foam and wood. This will give me an idea of what shapes work and feel comfortable and allow me to progress.
Testing the 5ā touchscreen!
Unpacking the touchscreen and plugging it in, I set up the rest of the electronics. Plugging in the HDMI cable, the mouse and the keyboard I turned on the raspberry pi. The screen displayed the log in of the pi and then eventually the desktop! After configuring the screen with the buttons provided, I tested the screen with my finger. But nothing happenedā¦ What a disaster! I checked the amazon page where I bought it and copied the model number. I pasted it into the website of the seller and it came up with the same screen but in the description it says āno touchscreenā. What a stressful time to have the wrong product. I phoned amazon to let them know that this product description is wrong and they arranged a refund and to send it back. But now I had to locate the one I needed. Trawling the web, I looked everywhere for companies in the UK that sell it and none could be found. Eventually I had to order one from the US site and pay a lot more for express delivery. Such an important part and it has let me down. Now I need to wait for the right one to be delivered.
My Screen has arrived!
I ordered a 5ā touchscreen from amazon, as the previous 2.8ā touchscreen was simply too small and after a few days, stopped working. With the larger screen, I will be able to fit the whole āappā onto it and use the whole interface. With the smaller screen, the raspberry pi operating system (raspbian) did not completely fit on the display ā it was crushed to fit the 2.8ā screen meaning most of the applications and tools on the OS were unusable.
Mark 1 Presentation
Today was our presentations to show what we have made so far and get feedback and advice on where to go next. I showed Chris and the group what I had made so far ā the app I had made in Axure and some sketches of forms for the device. Unfortunately for the presentation, the 2.8ā screen stopped working so I placed an order for a larger 5ā touchscreen. The advice I was given was to make it more fun and gameify it to make it more interactive for children. Going back to work from this, I intend to start 3D prototyping the shell and finding a focus group to discuss the idea with.
Building my Mark 1 Prototype
Today I started building my mark 1 prototype on a program called Axure. It uses the detail of coding but in a much simpler format. For example, if you want a button to join two pages, you can simply draw a button, link it to the two corresponding pages, and it does the rest for you. So it is a much simpler and faster way of coding what is essentially an app. Working on it for the day, I am almost finished the basic structure with linking pages and buttons, now all I need to do is play around with the graphics and information on the separate pages.
