nobody talks enough about the line “I’ll spend a few on you, cause the only room with a view is a room with you in it.” like. he just SAYS that. he says that to her so casually?? like it is so obvious to him. but the vulnerability in his voice too... the absolute romanticism of that line takes my breath away every time. like I have to pause to recalibrate a little every time I hear that & process it. imagine someone feeling that way about you... it is so beautiful it makes it hard to breathe to think about. the poeticism of it? the inherent reference to the plot of the book? the way it’s just slipped into his fast-moving verse so the song moves by quickly even though we’re all still reeling over the sucker punch of emotion we were just delivered? the thing about Usnavi is that he is not eloquent in front of Vanessa. when he talks to her he loses his easy wordplay, the smoothness of his rhythm, he is nervous and stumbles over his words and meanings, but in this line he manages for a moment to get across exactly what he means in an elegant, expressive turn of phrase and delivers it with so much casual reverence it catches me off guard every time. that line to me is his declaration of love. it is all of the poems and sonnets and symphonies to her inside his head expressed in one little sentence that he drops like it is the simplest thing in the world to him. god. I could write essays about that line
