After a long day of teaching rowdy middle schoolers, Ryland just wanted a peaceful rest of his afternoon. That’s what he thought he was getting.
As soon as he arrived to his apartment, he drew the curtains, illuminating the room in a soft glow. A record player turned a soft melody in the background, its notes adding to the calm atmosphere.
Ryland poured himself a cup of tea and headed straight for the couch to grade papers, the most peaceful afternoon, right?
Until a loud stomping came zooming down the hallway, stopping right at his door. You bursted through the doorway, just about breaking the door, and walked straight up to him.
“Uhm, hi…?” a hesitant, almost whisper slipped from his lips. “Why are you here?”
“My fucking boyfriend broke up with me.”
“Oh.” his voice could barely be heard, speaking in almost whisper-like tones. “I-I’m sorry?” he spoke louder this time, but Ryland was still unsure of what to say.
You were on the floor at that point, all of the emotions of your fresh break up and Ryland’s terrible attempt of comforting you. “That’s all you have to say?” You said in a sob, bringing your hands up to cover your eyes and sob into them instead, like that would make the tears go away.
“Wha-Oh, nonono-, I’m sorry that he broke up with you, that really sucks.” he cut himself of multiple times, before deciding to just come down and comfort you properly.
He set his laptop aside and crouched down to where you were sitting. He gently placed his hand on your shoulder, making small circular movements in an attempt to comfort you.
“I-uh…D’ya wanna watch a movie?” he cringed at his words, knowing that was probably not the best thing to say to a person who just got broken up with. But to his surprise, you lifted your head form your hands and nodded shakily.
He carefully took your hands to guide to a standing position, then he led you over to the couch.
You two decided to watch White Chicks, mostly decided for the fact that you needed something comedic after your breakup. Yeah, it was mostly your suggestion, so what? Ryland can suck it up and watch what you want, you just cried your eyes out over your stupid ex-boyfriend.
The two of you got comfortable on the couch, scooting close enough that your thighs brushed against his. The movie started, and your sorrows about your boyfriend slowly started to disappear.
Throughout the movie, Ryland gradually scooted closer to you. His arm wrapped around your shoulder at one point, his hand playing with your hair that flowed over your shoulder.
As the movie came to an end, you became aware of your closeness with him. You both stared at each to her, but made no attempt to move. In fact, you moved closer. You rested your head on his shoulder, and dragged your hand up to grab the front of his shirt to pull him closer.
Ryland didn’t seem to mind, he just continued playing with your hair.
“So,” he paused, “What should we do now?”
“Sleep?” you peered up at him through your lashes, eyes still holding a hint of red from crying earlier.
Who was he to deny you? Especially when you looked like a kicked puppy. “Yeah, okay.” He stood up and guided you to his bedroom.
When he pushed back the door to his bedroom, you glanced around. His room was definitely a reflection of him. It’s clear he wasn’t expecting visitors.
His bed was unmade, science pun shirts lying across it. His floor was mostly clean, thankfully, but socks without their missing twin were strewn about.
“I-uh, wasn’t expecting company.” he said embarrassed, a pink hue rising to his cheeks from under his collar.
“I don’t really care.” your tone held no emotion, you just wanted to rest.
“Ah, okay.” Ryland said under his breath. He then went digging through his dressers, looking for something you could change into. He found a pair of shorts and a sweater to wear, and wordlessly handed them to you.
You turned around and pulled off your jeans, then your shirt, and put on the clothes he gave you. You turned back around and saw Ryland already in his bed, with an empty spot right next to him, presumably for you.
You slipped into his bed next to him and made yourself comfortable. You turned to face him and whispered out a ‘thank you,’ before turning so your back was to him. You closed your eyes and tried to sleep, but the knowledge that Ryland was right next to you kept you awake. It wasn’t until Ryland threw his arm over your waist and brushed his fingers through your hair that you could finally rest.
The morning light shone through the curtains, gradually waking you up from your much deserved slumber. A weight on your waist kept you in place, and you turned to see Ryland was still asleep next to you. You tried to bask in the moment, but a harsh knock at the door pulled you from your thoughts and stirred Ryland awake from his rest.
“Morning.” his sleepy voice rung through the room, a syrupy sweet smile pulling on his face.
“Good morning.” you said in return, brushing your fingers through his wild hair. “You should probably go get the door.”
“I probably should.” He said reluctantly, slipping out of bed and pulling his glasses from the nightstand to put them on.
You heard parts of the conversation from his room, but you couldn’t make out who he was talking to, until the person at the door said your name.
Uh oh. Your boyfriend had showed up at Rylands apartment to try to win you back. Little did he know that you were in bed with another man only a few hours after he broke up with you.
You pulled yourself out of his bed, and padded into the front room to talk to your ex-boyfriend.
“Why are you here?” your voice conveyed no emotion, but under the mask of a blank face, you were furious. How dare your boyfriend show up to make things right after harshly breaking up with you not even 24 hours before?
“I could ask you the same thing.” he sounded so smug, you wanted to tear his voicebox right out of his throat.
“I break up with you, and not even a day after you’re sleeping with some other guy? I mean, that’s low, even for you.”
Is he serious? That’s what he has to say? Is your ex an idiot? Well, obviously. At this point, your eyebrows pulled up to form an incredulous look, utterly appalled with your boyfriend’s audacity.
You sputtered for an answer, but before you could, Ryland cut in.
“I-“ You didn’t let Ryland get a word in before you pushed him out of the way. This was between you and your boyfriend, it doesn’t involve him.
“First of all, I didn’t sleep with him, he’s my friend. And second of all, what kind of nerve do you have to show up to his place when you literally broke up with me?”
You thought that would get him to shut up, apparently, it didn’t.
“Well I was actually coming to apologize, to make it up to you. But since you’re out here being a slut, sleeping with other dudes-“ you didn’t let him finish his sentence before you punched him in the jaw.
The sound of your fist connecting with his jaw echoed through the room, shocking even yourself.
“Get the hell out of here, now.” you were firm, unrelenting. You wouldn’t let him say no. You wouldn’t even let him speak. You ushered your ex out the door and slammed it shut. Good riddance.
You breathed out a sign of relief, glad that your little confrontation was over. You turn your head to see how Rylands fairing over the situation.
His jaw hangs open in shock, gaping like a fish out of water. It looks like he’s trying to say something, but nothing comes out. He finally managed to sputter out a ‘Wow.’ and you laugh, shocked by the overall situation and the craziness of it all.
“That was hot.” you just barely managed to catch it, but it shocks you nonetheless.
“Pardon?” you try to get him to repeat it, but he acts like he said nothing.
“So are we done with him?” he inquires.
“Are you taking applications? I’d make a great new boyfriend.” he nudges you playfully, a smile pulling back on his face.
“Send me your resume and I’ll consider your application.” you quip back, grateful for the distraction of what just happened.
Ryland probably would make a good boyfriend. But it may be a little too soon for that.
For now, he makes the both of you coffee and settles on the couch, talking about what you guys are doing today.
You may not know if he would be a good boyfriend, but he sure is a damn good friend.
yeah idek this is shit and I still don’t know how to count so don’t ask me how many words there are
