“Unfortunate, cause it’s a really good skill to have, you know? Being able to take care of a magical creature, you never really know when one might need you. They can’t exactly wrap their own bandages. I know a fair amount about hippogriffs…”
“-- Yeah, I know, I talk to ‘em sometimes, they get curious about the weird magic dog about, y’know? Seriously, though, how d’you groom the feathers?”

Avalon laughed, still running a hand through the dog’s fur, part of the reason Avalon loved Ollie so much was because he was so muggle. It made her feel less self-conscious about her own upbringing, and she matched his grin with one of her own. “Sounds fake but okay. What, couldn’t resist joining in? You even know what you’re howling about?”
Ollie laughed, shook his head, and admitted, “-- Back when Zootopia came out I told him about the wolf howl stuff, since then, he keeps howling at me. It’s been a while since the last bout, s’ppose the wolves in the Forest just...reminded him, eh? Hence, the starting of the ceremonial howl.” As if on cue, Tom ‘awoo’d, and, with a fond grin, Ollie ‘awoo’d a response.

“Not Hufflepuff.” Lawrence nodded “Slytherin. And I assume you’re in Hufflepuff?” He did occasionally recognize people from his year, and even less, he recognized people from his house. He didn’t have very many friends.
“-- Oh, really?” Ollie raised an eyebrow, though it was more out of curiosity than anything else. “-- Yeah, that’s right, Hufflepuff through and through. Took me ages to stop calling it Jigglypuff. Hey, don’t you get cold in your dorms?”
benjiscott:
“Are you sure? Or do you have homework about it. You’re in Care of Magical Creatures and doing a bit on Hippogriffs, or something right now, that’s why you’re listening?”
“-- Nope! Er...yes, I’m sure, no, I’m not. I was gonna do it, but then I remembered it’d mean traipsing around and that, and by the time I was alright with that, it was too late to take it. Y’know, I’m starting to think you might be bluffing how much you know about hippogriffs.”

“I’m Lawrence.” he said “Lawrence McPherson. I’ve seen you around the castle a few times.”
“-- Oh, right.” They’d never really talked before, but he knew the name, he thought. Maybe. Then again, howling in corridors was somewhat of a rare experience for him. Ollie offered a crooked grin as he joked, “-- I wish I could say the same. You’re not a Hufflepuff, eh?”

“I swear, I don’t know how in Merlin’s name you made it up there,” Luke’s eyes narrowed towards where a small black cat was perched on an outcropping over his head. Crossing his arms, he raised an eyebrow, “Either you come down from there or so help me I will go get my broom and fly up myself.” In response he was given a small mew, causing him to let out a sigh. “God dammit, Iris.”
Ollie cocked his head, Tom wagging his tail at his side. “-- What’s happening?”

“I- I don’t think it’s weird.”
“-- Well, good. That’s settled, then. Tell me about hippogriffs, oh wise and glorious hippogriff-know-about-er. ...I know that might’ve sounded sarcastic but it seriously wasn’t.”
benjiscott:
“Wait. Do you really want to hear about hippogriffs?” Benji asked, half shocked that Ollie had even replied to his run off tangents..
“-- Well...yeah. Is that weird?”

“Wow man. Impressive.” Lawrence said “How long have you been dogging out?” the phrase came to him randomly, but it did seem a fitting name for what Ollie did. Much better than ‘Animagus’, which was a boring word, at least to Lawrence. He smirked a little, as was common for him.
“-- Officially? June twenty-sixth, two years ago. McGonagall taught me. ‘Fyou don’t mind me asking, mind...who exactly are you, again?”
benjiscott:
“Because, you know it takes about a year for a Hippogriff’s feathers to grow back, and that’s granting a good moult season. So if you’re grooming one, they love a gentle brushing. Who wouldn’t enjoy a gentle brushing? If you’re grooming one, you have to be careful of damaged feathers.” Benji was going on and on, half assuming that someone was listening. When he finally did look up, all he could do was wince. “Sorry. I mean… gosh, I hate homework?”
Ollie shrugged, massaging Tom’s fur with his fingers, the dog leaning against his leg as he sat, listening to the other. “-- Sounds fake, but okay. So, d’you need to groom the different parts of a Hippogriff differently?”

“I’ll keep that in mind if I ever attempt to be an animagus” Lawrence said “I don’t think it’s for me though.” He imagined being able to transform into an animal at will. It wasn’t really his greatest fantasy. “So, how many times have you fallen off a moving staircase by accident? I’ve done it about 94 times. 7 times on purpose.” Lawrence said things like that a lot. They didn’t seem odd to him, just true
“-- Hey, not bad,” grinned Ollie, shrugging. “-- Still got you beat, though, mate, I stopped counting at a hundred and ten. Haven’t done it since turning into a dog became part of my daily routine, mind, but the point still stands, right?” Was he being serious? Was he joking around? The world may never know.

Ollie’s head perked up, Tom’s ears twitching where he sat beside him on the ground near a window in a quiet corridor. Here he was, doing homework, quietly muttering to the quill to write what he said and what was that noise? He knew there were wolves in the Forbidden Forest, the spawn of werewolves, he thought the legend said, but he didn’t usually hear them howling. Next to him, Tom ‘awoo’d, and Ollie couldn’t help but mimic it (after grabbing the quill so it didn’t actually write the word ‘awooooooo’ in the middle of his Transfiguration essay. And so, Ollie and his dog ‘awoo’d to each other, sitting in the corridor. Because that was as good a starter as any.
Hearing someone howling in the hallway should have been weird, it wasn’t. It really really wasn’t because as it happened Avalon had been at the school when Ollie was going through the process of becoming an animagus. His paws had been huge. She laughed. So when she found him, howling, she simply smiled and pet Tom. “You two aren’t exactly a wolf pack you know.”
The number of people Ollie could recognise by the rhythm of their feet was, unsurprisingly, rather low. Avalon, however, had managed to make it into that category through the years the two had known each other. So, when they piped up, Ollie grinned in their general direction. “-- Bitch we might be.”

“Really? An animagus, at your year? Impressive.” Lawrence was genuinely impressed. He’d never actually met any animagi that were students. “I bet it was difficult. Bet you failed it a bit when you first began. Might’ve been funnier if you were a collie. Get it? Ollie, collie?” Lawrence laughed a little. He did have a habit of saying his mind.
“-- A collie, oh my god, can’t say I’ve heard that before,” Ollie laughed, goodnatured. “-- Yeah, McGonagall suggested it, she taught me to minimise chances of walking directly off the moving staircases and y’know, generally meeting my end as a result of not being able to see where I’m going. It was really hard, though, honestly, see the amount of times you nearly swallow the mandrake leaf? And waking up at the crack of dawn every day for the incantation? Zero out of ten, do not recommend.”

Lawrence was quite surprised when he got a coherent answer that would have made sense. That is, if he’d ever been to a Muggle movie, which he hadn’t. This Zootopia sounded like it would be really boring. People could be animals in the wizarding world, although he did admit that it took some time unless you got the ‘luck’ to be bitten by a werewolf. Heh. He would have chuckled, but he was 90% sure that the howling person wouldn’t understand why. “You do realize that the…movie? That’s what they’re called? Is for children, right? Wolves can stop howling whenever they want to.”
“-- Oh, I know,” grinned Ollie, pushing a hand through his hair and flicking his sunglasses up to hold it back, his grin making his eyes crinkle at the edges. “-- Yeah, it’s a movie, yep, it’s for children, yeah, I know wolves can stop howling whenever they want. It’s just funny ‘cause I turn into a husky, as in that one breed of dog notorious for howling instead of barking. Tom just likes poking fun at me, he does.”

Lawrence happened to be walking through the corridor, his arms full of books. He saw Ollie and his dog and immediately started to wonder what they were doing. Couldn’t he go a day without something weird happening? No? Oh well then. He looked at them, and in a cold, slightly curious tone said “What are you doing?” Lawrence couldn’t imagine a practical reason for why anyone would be sitting in a corridor with a dog, howling. (Hope this is okay lol)
Tom stopped howling and Ollie stopped a moment after, turning his head towards the sound of somebody asking a question, not really taken by surprise, but having not really expected to be questioned. This was a school where books literally flew around the library and the paintings on the walls talked, after all. As such, he shrugged and smiled amicably. “-- Making ‘awoo’ noises at each other. There were wolves howling outside. It’s sort of a running joke between me and Tom, since we saw Zootopia this summer. You mightn’t’ve heard of it, it’s a muggle movie about all these animals that act like humans and stuff, sort of like animagi only they’re actual animals? The wolves in it keep howling at each other, it’s like they can’t help but ‘awoo’. Decent flick, honestly.”
