Join my team in Illinois this Saturday (20 May) for an investigation at the legendary Ashmore Estates benefitting the Lost Limbs Foundation. If you’ve always wanted to go on an investigation, this is a great place to start!
Join my team on 20 May for an investigation at the legendary Ashmore Estates benefitting the Lost Limbs Foundation. If you don't have an audio recorder, use the voice recorder on your phone--especially while you're on the third floor. (Sadly, I will be MIA from this event due to my stroke at the end of January.) Location has bathrooms and electricity, but the cell phone service is a little sketchy. For more information, including the history of the building and property, please follow the link below. http://www.ashmoreestates.net
Last weekend’s a few members of my team led tours through a haunted location at the owner’s request. The house dates to the early 1900’s and is located in a small (200 residents) town in southern Indiana. This is my summary of the weekend.
The front room has shadow figures that can be seen and felt. The living room is fairly general, some activity but nothing much. Major activity on the first floor seems to occur along the path from the west (table room) door and the east (kitchen) door, through the pass through area. You can feel the increase in energy standing in this pathway, particularly in the kitchen. This increased activity is repeated upstairs, also on the north end of the house.
Activity is not limited to the house; we’ve experienced activity in other buildings, and while walking between those buildings, There is some conjecture that the whole town is haunted. You may be able to feel the house, or the town, before you round the curve entering the town limits.
Here is what occurred, and where, during the tours the weekend of 9 October 2015. I’m not including anything about the barn. There were some disembodied voices heard, and some people reported being touched, but we weren’t out there to experience anything directly.
Over the course of the weekend, we led eighty-some people through the house in groups of five to ten people. Friday night we had six groups; on Saturday we had four. Very few people had investigated before; most were locals who were curious. The plan, which was generally followed until the last two groups Saturday, was to give them the history of the location as they were waiting for the campfire, then fifteen minutes in the barn, fifteen minutes upstairs: five in the attic room doing thermal photography and going dark, five minutes in the yellow room talking about Ganzfeld and spirit boxes and doing a brief spirit box session, five minutes in the pink room introducing pendulums and dowsing rods, then downstairs where fifteen minutes was spent between laser grids in the front room and K2/digital thermometer in the kitchen. Finally, there was an equipment overview and Q/A in the Table Room.
Our experience prior to that weekend had made us aware of two primary entities on the property: a little girl, and a negative adult male energy that may or may not be human. They are rarely in the same space–the girl tries to avoid/escape from the negative presence– but they tend to be more active on the north end of the property., though the little girl avoids the attic room–that’s his space. She seems to more readily interact with women or with men with whom she’s familiar. No doubt there are other entities present, but those two are the ones most prevalent when we are there.
The girl seems to be related to the area, though maybe not a former resident of the house. I’m not sure if she’s a spirit, or if possibly some part of her memory is trapped/stuck in a place where something traumatic happened when she was a child. (The best I can describe that is that it’s like a Horcrux from Harry Potter, though no one seems to have died.) She can respond intelligently and does not seem to just be residual energy. The male, as I said, may or may not be human. He seems to be far more powerful than the girl, and far more adept at interfering in the physical world. He is also not residual energy. The dark energy enjoys being behind you, or being where you’re not looking. He is also not confined to the house, and is capable of leaving with you.
Some of the things that came out of sessions this weekend: the little girl is afraid of him, and afraid to leave because he’ll hurt her. She doesn’t have a safe space in the house, somewhere he can’t go. There’s no one in her family there with her. She doesn’t want toys because they’ll show him where she is.
Friday night started out fairly quietly. There was a palpable tension in the house, like the air vibrating, but nothing overt. The first group was uneventful, which wasn’t unexpected given how quickly we needed to move to get them through before the next group started. There was nothing in the attic room except some cold spots. The whole evening, almost nothing happened in the attic room other than cold spots and a few touches. I told them about our previous experiences with shadow figures that reached over the barrier to the attic, or sat in front of the barrier trying to envelope the person sitting with his back to them, and of the rapidly moving knee-high shadows that suddenly coalesced into a humanoid figure on our last visit. I could see head, shoulders, and torso down to the hip on one side and head and shoulders on the other, with light hitting the first side and breaking around the figure; my fellow investigator saw the figure but no light. Like I said, this weekend was mostly uneventful in that room–except for this: when I was alone in the room, I twice lost my vision entirely, each time only for a few seconds. (It wasn’t tunnel vision like when you pass out, everything just instantly went pitch black.) I took a break outside the house afterwards, and it didn’t happen again.
The yellow bedroom had an SB-7 running audibly both nights, all night long. We didn’t get voices through the white noise during the tours, but we did several times get voices from it while I and/or B were standing in the hall by the stairs. Most of what I heard was female and young, and was warning me or us. “He’s watching you, He wants you, He’s right behind you.” Like I said, though, no voices while the groups were in there. The strangest thing that happened in the yellow bedroom all weekend was Saturday night, late. We were waiting in the pink bedroom for a group to come upstairs after they started late, when I noticed that I wasn’t hearing the white noise. B went into the yellow room and got the SB7, then said it was on but really quiet. When he handed it to me I could hear it, but it was really low. When I tried to turn the volume back up, I found that, despite making noise, it was actually no longer powered on. Then it went silent. We took it downstairs (after a few rounds of Holy Shit!), changed the batteries, and it functioned normally the rest of the evening.
The pink bedroom has always been particularly active. On B’s first visit, he found a cancelled check in the closet. When he picked it up, the K2 went to red. He dropped the check and it went back to green. This activity repeated a few times. I’ve been touched in the room before, seemingly by a child, and there are thermal pictures of my neck with cold spots on it. There’s also thermal video from August of my necklace going cold, then back to body temperature as soon as I touched it.
Last weekend, we used that room to demonstrate dowsing rods and pendulums. Dowsing rods were somewhat responsive for people, though more so for locating things than answering questions. The pendulum was far more responsive to questions. Most of what came through was consistent with the girl. At one point, responses were really strong–Ive never seen a pendulum swing like that. Then, several things happened simultaneously: the pendulum froze, there was a intense pain in my back from my left shoulder blade to my kidney, like I’d been kicked in the back, the group felt something small and cold run between them and out the door, and B, who was standing in the hallway, felt something cold run through him and felt both bannisters shake as if something was rushing down the stairs. After that group, we got more interference from the negative entity. Dowsing rods and pendulums wouldn’t work for anyone but me (though they had earlier in the evening) and when we asked about it we were told that he wouldn’t let anyone else use them.
Saturday night started out much the same as Friday, though the whole house had a stronger feeling of waiting and watching. In between groups I was able to do a solo session in the pink room, and got confirmation of the first name of the girl that another group had heard. Additionally, I heard a last name that was then repeated with the pendulum. (We found out later that night that the last name belonged to the family who had lived down the street for sixty-some years.) While going through the alphabet trying to get the name, the pendulum would vibrate in place until I said the right letter–the weight was still but the chain was shaking.
The second group upstairs though, was really intent on getting answers to their questions–not from us, from the house. They’d read the history before they started, so they kept asking if they were talking to specific men. (They also had two girls with them who they claimed were seventeen but later admitted they were fourteen–not good.) One woman was really keen on using the dowsing rods. I’ve seen lots of people use rods, but I’ve never seen them spin around and begin crossing and uncrossing while pointing in at the user. While she was highly satisfied with the answers she was getting (her line of questioning was bordering on flirtatious) the answers felt wrong. The answers were running counter to both what I was hearing in my head and what the pendulum was showing me. I was hearing that they were annoying whatever it was and so he was fucking with them. “You want answers, here’s an answer.” I stepped to my left so that B, in the doorway, could see my face and how the pendulum was reacting. Then, whatever it is got really annoyed. I get the sense that he (it?) felt that I was responsible for the annoying people being there. Something gripped my pendulum wrist really hard and started twisting it. At the same time, the previous night’s kick was repeated. I had to leave the room. I stood in the yellow room for a minute holding my wrist, then had to leave the house for a few minutes.
When I did come back in, and went back upstairs, I could hear in my head that that had been intended as a threat. “You’re not stronger than me, I can hurt you, you can’t make me leave.” As I sat there, trying to refocus, something that felt like a hand gripped the top of my head and started slowly turning it to my left. It stopped part way and then restarted. I kept wondering what I was going to see when it was done turning. About the time I was looking at my left shoulder I said NO out loud and shook it off.
After that and the attack, we changed the plan. B did thermal in the pink room, and I did audio in the yellow room. No more pendulums with the groups. We did, however, do a final session in that room after everyone else had left. Our intent was to try to make a safe space for the little girl, as we didn’t think we could get her out at that point. I realized, though, that all that would accomplish would be to trap her in that confined space. Over the SB-7, her voice was frantic. “Go downstairs, Stop, No, Go away. He’ll kill you he’ll kill you he’ll kill you.”
We couldn’t get a response from her through any other means. The negative entity responded, and we saw some shadow movement behind John. Then I started getting hot. It felt like something hot was sitting on my feet and against my calves. Then my inner thighs got really hot, ALL the way up. (They’re almost white on the thermal.) It was in the lower forties outside, and there’s no physical reason that in just a pair of jeans my legs should get burning hot. When that happened I felt physically threatened so I decided we needed to call it a night.
Packing up was uneventful, though I was a bit shaky at points, and nothing followed us home.

This is audio caught during our investigation at the old Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana last weekend.
Nothing has been filtered or adjusted.
Also, the thermal cam shot used in the last EVP–the small figure on the right is me. The large really hot figure right in front of me? No idea, but I could see it while I was standing there.
Thermal cam shot from last night’s investigation at an old jail in Northern Indiana.
The first photo is me, in profile, standing between two cells that once held federal prisoners.
The second photo (wider angle shot) is also me, in the same spot–at least, the black arrow figure is me. I don’t know who/what the figure noted by the white arrow is; there was no one else at that end of the hall, though both Greg and I could see a shadowy figure standing there.
These gravestones are amazing. Cemetery fandom anyone ?
Audio from last night's investigation. Liz and I were the only ones there, and I'm fairly certain it's not us. This was pulled off the video camera that was sitting on stage.
Investigations and alcohol
Below is what I wish I could hand out to certain property owners who want to stay during an investigation: An investigation is no place for liquid courage. We know from experience that people who've been drinking are rarely able to follow directions, particularly when those directions involve staying still and quiet. Our team takes investigations seriously. We conduct them on our own time, and at our own cost. We have each devoted significant amounts of time and resources into training ourselves and obtaining high-quality equipment so we can reliably capture evidence. While we enjoy the excitement of an investigation, the evidence is what we're after, and that evidence can easily be trashed by someone who cannot stop talking, fidgeting, etc. Unlike what you see in the movies, paranormal evidence is often subtle and quiet. Evidence review is the most mind-numbingly boring task imaginable until that perfect moment when it's suddenly the most exciting thing in the world. Those moments, though, are few and far between. On an average investigation, we collect evidence from four video cameras and five audio recorders, most of which are in use the entire investigation. For a five hour investigation, that means there are potentially forty-five hours of evidence to review. Since most evidence goes through multiple reviews (some audio is only apparent on headphones, other audio is best heard through speakers, etc.) that means team members, individually or in groups, spend up to one hundred thirty-five hours going through evidence from a single investigation. (Now you know why Ghost Adventures has a six month lag from filming to air.) Of that one hundred thirty-five hours, we may end up with five to ten minutes of documented evidence to present. Given that ratio, the very last thing we want to hear three times over is your drunken ranting at the Ovilus X obscuring what would otherwise be a Class A EVP. (Be glad I'm a nice person, or I would totally swear that we heard the spirit saying, "I hid the money in the..." right before you started shouting over it.) If you choose to drink prior to the investigation and we feel that your behavior is potentially contaminating the evidence and/or interfering with the investigation, we will remind you once to stay still/quiet. If you continue the problem behavior, you will be asked to leave. If you choose not to do so, the team will immediately conclude the investigation, pack up and leave. If this occurs, we will not return for any future investigation. We will, however, be happy to send you the audio and video evidence documenting our rationale for leaving. (Repeat after me: four video cameras and five audio recorders.) If you absolutely must drink, either stay off-site until you're sober or save it for after the investigation, please. (Don't plan on hitting the bars after, though, we go past last call.) We're partial to pancakes and bacon at that hour, but to each his own.
Audio from our investigation at a local business in March. The business owners and their staff essentially took over the investigation. There's not much evidence because of the constant chatter and, on more than one occasion, yelling.
This audio seems to capture the long dead wife's voice, and before they ask for her. It ends quickly, though, because after they ask for Elizabeth and she answers, they don't ask any more questions. It was captured on a digital voice recorder, using an SB-7 spirit box. The Ovilus X was on in the background.

Caught on audio in the Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery South on Kelly Street, around 2:30 in the afternoon. I was alone in the cemetery. The first few seconds is me fumbling with the recorder. As that ends, a voice can be heard briefly singing or chanting.
Enhancing your kit
I think most of us envy two things on paranormal shows: locations and equipment. Affording such, when you don't have a television show funding it, is not something most of us can easily do. That said, I think I've put together a pretty decent kit, and most of it was stuff I already owned or could acquire inexpensively.
When it comes to containers, I prefer tool boxes. They're easy to carry, sturdy, and can be set down on wet or dirty ground. I started with one I already owned from art school, but recently traded up to a 28" Stanley FatMax with a water-resistant seal (dry cameras are happy cameras). If you have a choice of boxes with full or half trays, go for the half--it leaves room for your taller items.
There are a ton of websites that go over equipment, and most of them are far more equipped to talk about cameras and lighting than I am. I'm going to assume that you've already tackled the big three (flashlights, cameras, voice recorders) or have a plan to do so. [I'm lucky enough to be on a team where others have EMF detectors and digital thermometers, so I haven't had to invest in those yet.] Unless you're highly devoted to traveling light, you'll inevitably want to add to those key tools, though. Here are five (relatively inexpensive) things to keep in mind.
1. Velcro strapping is the most useful thing ever.
It comes in a twelve foot roll and you cut it to length. Not only will this keep your cords together, you can use it to fasten flashlights to cameras for extra illumination, or fix down trigger-style on/off switches. In a pinch, I've even attached a camera with a broken mounting mechanism to a tripod with velcro strapping.
2. Thrift stores are your friends.
Tool boxes or suitcases for your kit. Tripods. Trigger objects. Microphone stands (which are great for holding lights or grid lasers). Check out thrift stores and pawn shops for items that are still in good condition and won't break the bank.
3. Hit up the hardware store.
Things break, or don't work, or get left at home by accident. On any given investigation, you may need to rig something. MacGyver may have been able to manage with just chewing gum and a ball point pen, but give yourself a few more options. At least one person on your team should have a rudimentary tool kit. Things such as a multi-tip screwdriver, a utility knife, duct tape and masking tape, cable ties, clamps/clips, a tape measure, and a level will come in handy. If you'll be outdoors or in damp conditions, a disposable plastic drop cloth may be useful.
4. Bring a first-aid kit.
Even if it's just a little one from the dollar store, pack it. You're going to be walking around in the dark, sometimes in questionable places. Accidents happen. If you're prepared, you can get back to your investigation pretty quickly.
5. Clean up yo' shit.
There is nothing worse than going to a location and finding that a team investigating before you has left baby powder everywhere. Trust me, other teams will curse you but good if they have to sit and clean their equipment with q-tips because you didn't sweep up. At the very least, bring trash bags. If you're going to use flour or the like, bring a broom and dustpan, and use it. Also, bring unscented baby wipes for your hands afterwards.
Here's a link to the video presentation I put together regarding some of our evidence gathered at Black Moon Manor. We're going to use it during the class we're teaching on Saturday.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5sVoqpVdY8&feature=youtu.be
Another bit of audio from Black Moon Manor.
This is from the Toy Room camera again. There is a discussion going on in the Pink Room about the Pink Room camera, whose IR light had stopped working. When we mention the red (IR) flashlight, a voice whispers "scared" into the Toy Room camera (ten seconds into the clip). At twenty-seven seconds in, something else is said. I don't think it's us--the voice is breathy like the "scared" whisper--but it very well could be. I haven't yet deciphered what is being said.
Note: I ran this clip through Audacity's Normalize filter, which does help tremendously with clarity. It removes the audible distance, though. In the original file it's clear that we're a room away. This one sounds like it's all one big happy room. (If you're interested in hearing the unfiltered version, let me know).
