Chameleon, an interactive installation from Sehsucht.
An installation that creates facial distortions through body movement. The key elements we’re paying attention to here are the manipulation of normal human features into something unsettling and creepy.
In order to add more interactivity to our installation, we’re hoping to incorporate a facial distorting feature to emphasize the dread/uneasy portion of our concept and its relationship to curiosity and that need for comprehend things we interact with.
Roughs: Brainstorming Sketches Part 2
More ideation sketches exploring the use of projections on screens as doorways to separate spaces.
Projection as a window.
Projection on a screen as a doorway/portal to a separate space.
More concept exploration
Fractals are patterns that are repeated at growing, shrinking scale. The ratio between the parent and child pattern is rigid. Moreover, the design of a fractal pattern can be repeated without end.
Our concept our surrealism, and the design of our Living Room installation have the same elements of these mathematical sets. The Living Room enters itself through the small box the same way the patterns above repeat themselves until the scale is unrenderable.
Form development
Our initial posts consist of architectural bodies that place emphasis on man made structures and participants function primarily as observers.
As we looked more into our stream - Spatialized Events - we began to focus more on the experience of participants. We want to have them be a part of the space - their presence is critical for the event. Hence our exploration of size shifting in narratives such as Alice in Wonderland because they affect the protagonist and audience’s perception of reality.
Diagrams of our precursor installation set up.
The Living Room consists of a cubic room. Within the cubic room is a box placed at eye-level. The box has a face sized hole in it, for participants to stick their noses into. A camera inside the box, captures their face and the face is projected onto a wall of the cubic room. In addition to the camera, the box has a screen opposite the face of the hole and the participant is able to view the contents of the room from this screen. The feed for this screen comes from another camera placed tactfully from an angle that would mimic the eyeline of the face on the screen.
Concept Exploration
Our stream is Spatialized Events. We chose to focus on the cognitive maps and the conception of imagined spatial worlds. Our proposed project will focus on people's perceptions of a space and play with their sense of scale.
The Living Room is a surrealist interpretation of the relationship between dread and curiosity. The feeling is most often accompanied in instances where a person feels their sense of reality might be shifting. An apprehension and fear of the unknown or unpredictable, but a need to find closure.

「阿弥殻断層の怪」
The Enigma of Amigara Falls by Juni Ito Adding to the mood board because it is a good example of what we’re trying to achieve with our concept. Surreal events attract people. Where inexplicable occurrences cause people to crave answers, and can be played up as horror - emphasizing unknowing and uncomfortable moments, dread. Spatialization that threatens preconceived notions of world.
Roughs: Brainstorming Sketches
Initial ideation process:
Projections/screens that act as windows and doorways to separate spaces. Implies are larger space than actually exists.
Projecting live feed of people onto wall as giants. Or projecting people into “windows of a house” to play with architectural side of Spatialized Events stream.
Projecting a large face onto a wall, similar to the Wizard of Oz. The person whose face is projected views a monitor showing live feed a room they’re in. Infinite room concept.
Pentagon - participants view self from a different angle down a hall. Live video taken from another angle.
Project Proposal: Frames of Reference
Sense of scale and context is important to consider and incorporate in spatialized events. We refer to existing narratives that create surreal or curious moments for audiences by manipulating size relationships in environments. Challenges pre-existing laws of reality in audience based on the scale and purpose of objects.
Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass has Alice enter the less than logical Wonderland and encounter problems with how she fits into her space.
The Wizard of Oz is less than what we were led to believe. The protagonists and audience spend time engaged with a large floating head only to find out it’s a projection and distorted voice throw of a feeble old man.
Room 8 (and similarly, DoodleBug), a room within a room concept. The implication of infinite parallel existences occupying an ostensibly finite space.
Audiences are left with the sense of apprehension and varying degrees of anxiety about the situation, but also seek understanding and closure to re-calibrate their sense of reality.
Floor projection titled Magic Carpet
I have recently discovered the astonishing art work created by Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan . His work is very creative and different in a way...
The work of Xia Xiaowan, creating a unique 3D effect by painting on multiple layers of glass
Turning the wall of an abandoned building inside-out creating a juxtaposition of the ordered geometric series of windows by turning it askew.
Creating three-dimensional forms via UV light and thread.
A portfolio of work based around creating forms by casting light and shadow
“A man is trying to catch some sort of bug running around his room.”
Another video that serves as inspiration for our installation. Similar to Room 8, it implies infinite adjacent existences that overlap in a way we would never expect from our own realities, similar to the ignorance of the character in the film.
