( i had intended to be around a bunch these past two days but apparently my health had other plans for me 😭 i spent most of my weekend in bed unfortunately and it’s back to work today. i will definitely get to replies as soon as i’m able! )
"Yes! Thank you!" Lalanna chirped, and took the seat beside her on the bench. "I've never been to the Steppe myself," she added sheepishly. "But my brother went there a few years ago to train with our cousins. Maybe you've seen him? His name is Malachi. He has my father's darker scales, though, so you probably couldn't tell he's half Thavnairian unless he speaks."
It had been years since she had seen him in person, but word had been sent that he was doing well. She tried not to think how much taller he must have gotten by now. The brat!
"May I ask how you came to Eorzea?"
❝You have never been? Oh, it is absolutely beautiful. There is no place like it.❞
She tapped her chin in thought. ❝Malachi… The name sounds familiar, yes.❞
Though she could unfortunately not offer much more than that. She hadn't exactly been close to other members of her tribe, unfortunate as she was.
❝Oh, I left of my own volition.❞ Her expression turned somewhat sheepish at the question. ❝Not permanently, but… Indefinitely.❞
The Viera gave a little amused snort.
"Aye, quite. He's my wee brother. Cannae ye see th'family resemblance?" she chuckled, and shook her head, eyes glancing in the direction he had gone off in. "We were adopted by th'same pair o'Lalafells in La Noscea. He speaks proper, aye, but that's him hidin' his accent. I've no th'patience for that."
"I've no met many Au Ra, 'side from my retainer. Though I guess that's funny, comin' from a Veira," she admitted. "How'd ye find yer way tae the Scions?"
Borte giggled at the other's humor, muffling the sound behind her hand. It helped lighten the mood a little. As someone who was also adopted, once Meiko called A'kihiko her brother Borte didn't even need to question it. She'd learned from a young age that family is more than just sharing the same blood.
❝Well, I like your accent.❞ She said. ❝It is charming. I think it adds character.❞
Borte took a moment to have a proper look at Meiko. She was… Tall, especially compared to the Xaela woman. The ears only made her seem taller. ❝I've never seen a viera before,❞ she said in return. ❝It really is as they say, viera are very beautiful.❞
She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, lips pursed in thought as she recalled her introduction to the Scions.
❝Well… When I came to Eorzea, I had been adventuring by myself for a while when I met Thancred...❞ She trailed off at the mention of him. His fate was unknown at the moment, and she couldn't help but worry. Her gaze lowered.
❝He, uh… He introduced me to Minfilia, and she asked if I would join them.❞
"Ah, no. Vell, not exactly," Lalanna laughed sheepishly. "My name is Lalanna Oronir! I vas raised in Thavnair, but my father is from the Steppe." She gave a little bow of her head. "I only just joined the Scions myself! And -- I thought it vould be nice to become acquainted."
❝Oh!❞
Borte visibly relaxed. So she wasn't in trouble, and was in fact being introduced to another who claims the name of Oronir! She smiled, bowing her head politely in return.
❝It's so nice to meet you. I didn't think I would meet another Oronir after leaving home.❞
She gestured towards the open space beside her on the bench.
❝Would you like to sit?❞
Holding Borte's hand was something that Hope could definitely do if it would make it easier for her to jump. In fact, it would probably be better that way, since he could pull her after him if she froze up.
He could hardly leave her here after all, their presence hadn't been noticed so far, but there was no guarantee that would last.
❝Alright, we'll jump together then.❞ He pried her hand from his sleeve, replacing it with his gloved fingers. ❝On the count of three, okay?❞
Once they had actually jumped, he was sue she would realize it wasn't that scary. In fact, it was rather fun. There was something special about feeling the wind blowing through your hair as you fell at a high speed. Or at least there was when you knew you would land safely.
Under perhaps any other circumstances, Borte would have been flustered to be holding the hand of such a handsome man — perhaps she would think about it later and blush. She gripped his gloved hand as tightly as she could muster, as if letting go meant certain death ( even when Hope himself had already assured her that this was far from the case ).
❝O-okay… One… Twooo-AH! WAIT!❞ She had taken a slight step closer to the edge, and a bit of rubble had fallen beneath her foot — nothing to be genuinely concerned about, but, well… Clearly she was not being very rational right now. Startled, she huddled a little closer to Hope.
❝Sorry! Sorry. For real this time. O-one… Two…❞
her surprise makes emet-selch chuckle, a gloved hand waving in blase dismissal. what a jumpy thing she was for the supposed warrior of light. he couldn't help but wonder if it were an act she put on to make people underestimate her, or if she truly startled at the slightest breeze.
he saunters around her in a slow half-circle, gazing across the trees that surround them.
❝ these lands are not so unfamiliar to me, no. ❞ he admits with a hum, lips quirking at her description. cool, void-y cloud thing. that was one way to describe his powers, certainly. he couldn't exactly say he disagreed. ❝ but you are so very far from home. ❞
the ascian glances over her, seems to look her up and down almost in an assessing manner. ❝ this is not my task to complete, nor am I here to hold your hand. so what will it be, hero? ❞ arms stretch wide out from his sides, gesturing. ❝ where shall we go from here? ❞
because he's inviting himself along, of course.

Had the Ascian given voice to his curiosities, Borte would have argued that it was no mere breeze that had startled her, but the sudden appearance of a whole other person. Just about anyone would jump at that, surely.
… Then again, she wasn't supposed to be just anyone, was she?
❝You don't have to remind me,❞ Borte sighed wearily, lips pressing into the subtlest of pouts. ❝For a supposed reflection of my world, it feels so vastly different.❞
At least watching Emet-Selch served to take her eyes away from the overwhelming scenery, even if only for a moment. Even when he was taunting her like this, there was something so captivating about the way he carried himself that almost made her reluctant to silence him.
She stared at him in silent disappointment. Of course he wouldn't be helping her. As he'd stated on numerous occasions, he liked to watch. Nothing more. She had to fight back another sigh as her gaze returned to the forest.
She didn't say as much, but there was a part of her that was utterly pleased by his choice to tag along even if he wouldn't be helping. When it came to company, she believed she could certainly do worse ( though the Scions would likely be quick to disagree ).
❝… This way.❞ She nodded to herself in confirmation, stepping around Emet-Selch and heading off of the visible path.
She had no idea where she was going.
Lightning's eyes didn't leave the men until they were fully gone, her gaze lingering on the doorway for several minutes longer still after, just to make sure they didn't return.
She remained unsure as to whether or not they had actually managed to miss the girl, or if they just didn't dare go after her when she wasn't alone. Either way, the girl should probably be careful for a while.
Whether or not Lightning would give her anymore help with that was going to depend on the answer the girl gave her though. She didn't like bullies, if they were unfairly or maliciously pursuing the girl then she would give a hand, but she had no desire to be dragged into some foolish tiff.
Turning around to face the girl, Lightning crossed her arms in front of her, fingers tapping impatiently on her forearm.
❝Start talking.❞ She demanded, trying not to sound to harsh given the way the girl was collapse on the ground in relief. She didn't want the frighten her. ❝Who were those men, what did they want with you?❞
The woman didn't waste any time, it seemed. Borte shouldn't have been surprised; she certainly looked the sort. She gave herself a moment to get back up, brushing the dirt from her dress.
❝I have no idea who those men are,❞ she admitted quietly, nervous hands beginning to fidget with the hem of her gown. ❝But they claimed to know me. They kept following me, and when they cornered me I may have…❞
She looked away, wincing at the memory.
❝Kicked one of them in the groin really hard and ran away—❞
Yana's gaze was fixed on the way they came even as the woman wailed, making sure that there was no sign of the Banemite following them. It shouldn't she was fairly certain they were out of it's territory, but it was better to keep an eye out.
❝If it comes after me then I kill it.❞ She said matter of factly, in response to the woman's question. ❝I came here to hunt it in the first place.❞
She wasn't sure why the woman had come here though. Based off her fear, Yana was guessing that either she wasn't a fighter or wasn't a very experience one. The North Shroud was far from the most dangerous area around Gridania, but it wasn't the safest place for beginners either.
Of course, even most experienced people probably would be caught off guard by the appearance of a giant Banemite, it was an anomaly after all.
Still, she couldn't help but feel a bit frustrated. People wandering off the beaten path unprepared was how either they got killed, or other people got killed trying save them. Death might not be the end, but it was still a tragedy if a life got cut short.
❝You really have bad luck,❞ She commented, pushing her frustrations out of her mind. This was a time to be sympathetic, not harsh, the woman was clearly frightened. ❝That thing only recently showed up, any other time you'd have been fine.❞
If it comes after me then I kill it. It was such a simple statement that Borte immediately felt foolish for asking. If only she could have that sort of confidence when in the presence of a gross, oversized, deadly bug-thing.
❝What?❞ Borte had just stood upright and straightened her posture, but the revelation that this Banemite had only appeared recently caused her shoulders to droop. Of course this would happen. It was as if the Elementals themselves were plotting against her or something.
❝I swear I wasn't just wandering aimlessly,❞ Borte insisted, raising her hands defensively. ❝I was contracted by a member of the Botanists' Guild to gather some herbs that only grow around here when I—❞
She stopped abruptly, looking down. She looked this way and that, doing a full rotation. The despair was writ clear on her face:
She hadn't picked up her basket of herbs in all the commotion. It was probably still exactly where she'd abandoned it in her attempt to flee from the Banemite. She needed those herbs if she wanted to be paid for the job, and she really needed that gil…
❝… You said that you came here to hunt that thing, right?❞ She looked like she didn't even want to ask her next question, but she blurted it out nonetheless.
❝C-can I come with you?!❞
Oh, no. Not this lass crying. Now Meiko was going to start crying.
"--A-Aye. It is." She took a moment to look away, trying to compose herself. They couldn't have a proper conversation if both of them were a tearful mess.
The Viera took a shaky breath. Then she went on, clearing her throat, "I know we should expect this sorta thing, opposin' th'Garleans an' all. S'naive tae imagine we'd never be hit at home. Still..."
Mei had seen her fair share of corpses back in Wadewick, but it was rare they were anyone she'd known well. She hadn't acquainted herself with everyone who worked in the Scions, but they had all shared a roof under the Waking Sands. It felt almost violating, seeing their headquarters invaded so.
"...We just... have tae mourn, but not stop, aye?" she muttered finally, looking back down at her. "Hiko said th'others were taken. We have tae do what we can tae prevent more of...this."
She paused, then shook her head at herself.
"Sorry. I dinnae think we've ever properly been acquainted. The name's Meiko," she paused, and then added weakly, "Though it's a shite time fer introductions, I suppose."
The woman had a point. Dark as it was, associating with the Scions was practically putting a target on your head — any moment could be your last, even if Borte did everything in her power not to think about that. But knowing the dangers and the possibility did not make this any less heartbreaking. So many lives, so many people with their own dreams and goals, so much promise, just… Cut short.
Borte reached up to wipe at her eyes, nodding her head.
❝You're right. We have to keep going, For them.❞ Her voice wavered as she spoke, but she tried to ignore it. Sniveling like this over fallen comrades would have gotten her laughed at on the Steppe. She really hadn't changed at all, had she…?
Ah. Now was not the time for self-deprecation. Not when there was so much to be done.
❝Meiko…❞ Borte repeated the name softly, and despite her eyes still wet with tears, she smiled. ❝I am Borte. Would that we could have met under lighter circumstances… But it is lovely to meet you nonetheless. You are a… Friend of A'kihiko's?❞
Borte was… Aware of the miqo'te, at least, though she hadn't yet had the opportunity to properly acquaint herself. Meiko seemed to be quite familiar, however.

Finding the Scions had not unfolded the way she had anticipated. Not as far as timeliness or reception or even how she had made it there. Almost two years had come and gone since she unwittingly found herself arrested by the Brass Blades merely for associating with them, and then...
Everything else.
Lalanna had found her resolve once more, despite everything. The Scions, although burdened with tasks far beyond her, were mostly kind and understanding. She had the opportunity to carve a place out for herself here if she wanted, at least until it was safe enough to travel back to Thavnair and bury her head in the sand.
She knew she wouldn't, though. Although this journey had upended her life, to throw all the lessons she'd learned from it felt like a waste. If she could not rid herself of the Echo, she would have to learn to live with it -- and maybe control it in some manner, if possible. Regardless, she was tired of feeling like a leaf at the mercy of the wind.
Krile had mentioned that there was another Oronir among them, but Lalanna had been too overwhelmed to seek her out. Now that she had taken a few days to collect herself, she took the initiative to find her. Borte, her name was, and Tataru said she had been assisting some of the Doman refugees with errands around Mor Dhona. It didn't take her long to find one of the few Au Ra in town; fortunately, she didn't appear to be currently preoccupied.
"Excuse me," she approached the other, seemingly taking a break on a bench. "Do you happen to be Borte of the Oronir tribe...?"
The Rising Stones felt very different from the Waking Sands. Larger, busier — especially now, with the Scions' plans for the future all but certain. Though nothing seemed to be set in stone just yet, she had already heard whispers of the worsening situation in Gyr Abania. It only felt natural that their Hero would find themselves heading that way to offer aid… She wondered if there was anything she could do to assist? Should she accompany them? Would she merely hold them back? The Garleans were a force to be reckoned with…
Such thoughts swirled about in her mind as she took a brief rest on a nearby bench. She'd been running a few small errands here and there, and so it was nice to be off of her feet for a moment.
❝Eh?❞ Borte lifted her head to acknowledge the woman who had approached her. A fellow au ra, though she appeared to be Raen. Borte didn't recognize her, and so it was surprising to hear her own name fall from the stranger's lips.
Had she done something? Was she in trouble? She nodded hesitantly.
❝Y… Yes, I am she.❞ Borte answered. ❝Is there something I can do for you?❞
( i have been under the impression that i was relatively normal about emet-selch. i don't think that's actually the case. )
i took these a few months ago but i was thinking about them recently and figured i'd post. i think borte and sarnai would have a very nanahachi-like dynamic if they adventured together
"I feel as if , if I don't watch them for all hours as I can. the giant float will burn in fire."
The other tribes were helping, for sure but the namazu were a different breed of annoyance that filtered into rage and despair. Something this close to feeling despair should not be allowed to exist, but it does.
"They need more training, but ..."
A sigh.
"They are just tiring."
Borte allowed Ilberd to air his grievances, gaze sympathetic. Though she had not witnessed them with her own eyes, the Oronir woman had heard plenty about the Namazu and how… Troublesome, they could be.
❝It sounds like you definitely need a break, then.❞ She concluded, clasping her hands together.
❝Allow the Xaela to keep watch over them for a time,❞ she suggested, placing a gentle hand against the man's arm. ❝When was the last time you had a proper meal?❞
