Into the Woods
After a magical day in the Keys, our best bet financially was to take yet another overnight adventure to arrive in Tampa. However, our ventures would not be the smoothest. Night construction led us astray and the GPS detour decided to take us straight through a swampy forest in the darkest hour of the blackest night. There was no guiding star burning bright, just an eerie road filled with gator tourist spots. Seeing this, Nova at the helm asked "what do I do if I see a gator in the road?" Roadtrip expert, Fern, immediately answered "you run it down!" We laughed about it and continued along into the starless night. The roads were empty nigh for us so we used our brights to venture along. As a lovely verse of "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" came to a close, happiness filled the air. Lo, an oncoming car! We kill the brights and darkness encompasses the road ahead again with swamps on both our sides. As the car comes our way, a shadowy figure emmerges in the road. This log stretched from over the double yellow lines into the shoulder. But log it was not. This monstrous gator lay still. Now, my eyes were on the side of the road, hand stretched out the window so I saw not what happened next but a thud broke my trance and I see Fern's hand gripped on the wheel and Nova was in shock. I learn we struck a gator and it's head had just flew past my arm, missing it by inches. Having not seen the action, I picture it in my head and crack up. My laughter was stopped shortly by the panic of Nova, stricken with guilt having taken the life of a creature. Tru had awoken and slept again within an instant so it was up to Fern and I to calm the shaken Nova. Fern went for consoling by saying it essly and instantly in a decapitated flurry. My first instinct was to tell her the gator she just struck was a beast that would have eaten thousand of babies including Prince George and Princess Ackles. All in all, the incident has become a story to remember and almost no scars have been left. Just a remarkable tale for all of us to blog about. - Strik
