Diary of a Stage Manager #...??

Hey there, it’s been a crazy few months so let’s catch up. I hope to be able to post some more detailed entries once my show is over. One month till I’m free 🤞🏻😉.

College theatre is nuts. No one wants to tell you that because everyone wants you to join, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Nuts doesn’t necessarily equal bad, as long as you can handle what’s thrown at you. As long as what’s being thrown is....handlable. But in this semesters case, nuts = living torment.

And by torment I mean classes 9-2, homework, and rehearsals from 6-11. Oh and don’t forget to sleep, work, and eat. I once saw a triangle that at its three points held Money, Sleep, and Happiness, and inside it said “choose two”. There is not a better explanation for the culture of college theatre. The inability to handle all three things at once is alarming. What would any sane person choose to lose? Sleep? Lack of sleep can not coexist with happiness. But to lack money is to lack stability. To lack stability is to lack happiness. And happiness? I can only speak personally but to lack happiness is to struggle to keep going.

So yeah, college theatre is akin to drowning in water but somehow being in the exactly right ocean.

But like I said, there are good seeds. Good days where you don’t go home aching and praying to have to take the next day off. Good people who make your bad days better by shining a little bit of their light on you and helping you breathe deep again. And even good moments, where when you’ve forgotten what good days and people look like, you see someone happy with their work, hold back laughter at an inappropriate time, or share a look with you. You quickly learn to cherish those moments that remind you that rehearsals don’t last forever and tech week is just in fact a long but bearable week.

Next semester should be easier. That’s what I’ve been told. I’m praying they’re right. There isn’t a day I don’t think “what am I doing”, but I guarantee you that every night I go to bed confident that I’m in the right place.

Diary of a Stage Manager #....6?

Hi! The last month of my life has been absolutely crazy! Closing a show, moving away from home, starting at Uni. I just got placed as a PA (Production Assistant) for one of my school’s upcoming shows later this year. I’m super nervous because I don’t really know how Theatre runs outside of Community Theatre but I’m also super excited for this opportunity! I’m not sure when the next update may be, I may just end up writing about my theatre school experience in general. Idk I’ve got time to decide. Just really wanted to pop on here and update because I want to be able to look back and remember this. ☺️

Diary of a Stage Manager, #5 (July 27th, 2019)

Long story short, life’s been nuts. Welcome to theatre lol.

So I’m currently on day...14? Of tech week because I decided to help backstage for the teen show, which was the weekend right before my show. And this week has been nothing short of hectic with my show. So of course I’ve overworked myself and I’m tired as tired could be, but I still love it. I can’t even say I get a break because I roll right into assisting with auditions for the company’s fall show and then move in for my university.

I may never get a break since my major is theatre and honestly....call me crazy but I’m loving it. If you’d ask my ankles they’d probably have a different opinion though. They hurt and I need ice and elevation STAT.

This is me popping back in to say it may be a while before I post again because of how busy I’ll be, but I will be sure to write my final thoughts down about the show and post them when I get the chance :)

Diary of a Stage Manager, #4 (July 1st, 2019)

This entry comes less from a stage managers perspective and more from a theatre kid’s.

Having close friends in the theatre world is priceless. Especially when it’s a small enough community that you’re all pretty much apart of the same show for the same company. The amount of love you can give the show through such a big and strong bond is amazing to see in action.

Imagine about two dozen people all being a part of the same show, and then imagine how strong the cast must be. My theatre company was lucky enough to have such talented people happen to be close enough in age to form such a bond. Spanning over six different local high schools and one college, we have been beyond lucky to have found each other. This next year will be even tougher because we’re now growing (or shrinking?) to three high schools and four colleges.

This entry is different from most others, I guess it’s just important for me to note that this CAN happen. It’s rare but when it does, it’s worth cherishing with all you’ve got. I realize how lucky I am to have all of these people in my life and I wouldn’t trade a single one of them ❤️.

Diary of a Stage Manager, #3 (June 23rd, 2019)

Wrangling five kids is work. Wrangling fifteen is a headache. Wrangling 20? A stress fest. My town has a showcase/festival/thing where local artists can show off anything pertaining to the arts. Dancing, painting, jewelry, acting, welding, singing, you name it we probably have a booth for it. As a part of a main stage block, the kids from my current show performed a song. Our director had to be out of town exactly when the kids took stage so being the confident person I am (HA) when she asked me to be in charge I said “sure, I can handle it, why not?”.

Believe me when I say that kids are the hardest to handle. And I mean that in the fact that even teens could handle going on without their director but 20 kids, under the age of 12? I was NOT made for this job. I applaud, no, I admire anyone who has tackled directing children. It’s a brave job because you’re tackling with a lot of loud personalities who are still coming into who they are. I am not built for it, and I recognize the talent and heart it takes.

what are three musicals you should listen to before you die ?

Next to Normal- stellar vocals & a phenomenal cast. One of the most “real” musicals I’ve heard and with such powerful messages it should be at the top of more people’s lists.

Hamilton- A classic. Not even a decade old but the show is already so popular and beloved. It’s a “basic” pick but everyone should give it a listen at least once in their life.

Big Fish- Powerful message of love and life. There’s some wackiness thrown in between, not unlike everything else Tim Burton has touched. Streong songs with beautiful themes of life, love, and death. Also an underrated musical that I wish got more love.
