Emma Kisiel holds a bachelor of fine arts with an emphasis in photography from the University of Colorado Denver. “At Rest” is a photographic series depicting roadkill on American highways and addressing our human fear of confronting death and viewing the dead. Kisiel’s images draw attention to the fact that, while man has a vast impact on animal and natural life, dominant American religions insist that animals do not have a place in Heaven and are, therefore, of little value in our society. To cause the viewer to feel struck by this truth, Kisiel photographs memorials she builds surrounding roadkill at the location at which its life was taken. “At Rest” expresses the sacredness to the bodies of animals accidentally hit by vehicles while crossing the road.

The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.

That's not even a joke. Developing a kink scenario so elaborate and so excruciatingly particular that it can only properly be contemplated in the frame of a world created specifically to contain it is genuinely closer to Tolkien's actual creative process than 99% of the stuff that plays at being heir to his legacy.

The Old Parrish Place is the Swamp God

So I'm reading through the Incryptid series, and I decided to squeeze in the Ghost Roads books after Spelunking Through Hell. I most recently finished The Girl in the Green Silk Gown, and I've read many of the short stories. For this post, the most relevant ones are the Alice and Thomas stories. Because I'm not 100% caught up, I've been avoiding the tag, so apologies if this is something that gets revealed later or is already a common fandom theory.

So the story of the Old Parrish Place is that some time ago, a man murdered his family for the favor of a swamp god. Whether the swamp god was ever real is considered ambiguous and speculative by most of the main cast. he residents of Buckley treat the building as cursed; but we are told in no uncertain terms by the family ghosts that it is not haunted, and that ghosts actively avoid the place. As Thomas Price lives there, the Parrish place seems to have a mind and physics of it's own, something I'd compare to the intelligence of the knowes in the Toby Day series. With just that, I would have been content to be curious to see what more gets revealed about this sentient location (the Galway woods are also treated as intelligent) as the books continued.

But then, to my surprise, I think I stumbled into an answer while reading the ghost roads spinoff series. These books take a very animistic approach. Anything loved- animals, places, cars, dolls- can develop a spirit and leave a ghost behind. One prominent force is the Ocean Lady, a goddess built from the history and collective belief in the old Atlantic Highway. Despite being connected to the Twilight and the Ghost Roads, The Ocean Lady is not a ghost, and in fact, there is made special mention of the fact that she does not tend to like/allow ghosts on her road, and protects her living routewitches from them.

I think the Parrish place is the swamp god the same way the Atlantic Highway is the Ocean Lady. A god/dess manifest in a physical location. That's the source of the Old Parish Place's intelligence and unusual magic. It's even noted that no matter how the walls get painted, everything reverts to swamp green. Whether by intent or accident, the Parrish patriarch made his home into a vessel/body for the god he worshiped.

Ask the Brindled

No'u Revilla 

Ask the Brindled, selected by Rick Barot as a winner of the 2021 National Poetry Series, bares everything that breaks between "seed" and "summit" of a life-the body, a people, their language. It is an intergenerational reclamation of the narratives foisted upon Indigenous and queer Hawaiians--and it does not let readers look away.

In this debut collection, No'u Revilla crafts a lyric landscape brimming with shed skin, water, mo'o, ma'i. She grips language like a fistful of wet guts and inks the page red--for desire, for love, for generations of blood spilled by colonizers. She hides knives in her hair "the way my grandmother--not god-- / the way my grandmother intended," and we heed; before her, "we stunned insects dangle." Wedding the history of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi with contemporary experiences of queer love and queer grief, Revilla writes toward sovereignty: linguistic, erotic, civic. Through the medium of formal dynamism and the material of ʻŌiwi culture and mythos, this living decolonial text both condemns and creates.

Ask the Brindled is a song from the shattered throat that refuses to be silenced. It is a testament to queer Indigenous women who carry baskets of names and stories, "still sacred." It is a vow to those yet to come: "the ea of enough is our daughters / our daughters need to believe they are enough."
