My day in reading. Had three Tarzan issues by three publishers, so I thought I would see how they compare. Pretty favorably, I’d say. Walking Dead was one of those issues that reminded you why comics are always a great medium for storytelling. Also enjoyed the Legion issues. This was from the era I discovered them. Wonderful stuff.
In Warlord Worlds Episode 16 we cover Green Arrow #27-28 featuring a special crossover adventure with The Warlord plus Jon Sable #22-24 and the Legion of Super-Heroes #208-209 by Mike Grell with guests Martin Gray of Too Dangerous for a Girl and Jeff Messer of the Geek Brain Pop Cast. iTunes: http://apple.co/1Idtnmk Stitcher: http://bit.ly/1PLVVv7 Google Play: http://bit.ly/1RYcdfK YouTube: http://bit.ly/2g0hMmi
Detective Comics Annual #5
Writers: Alan Grant & John Wagner
Penciller: Tom Mandrake
Inkers: Tom Mandrake, Jan Duursema, & Rick Magyar
Editor: Dennis O’Neil
We open with Scarface and the Ventriloquist onstage at the grand opening of their club. They tell some jokes, and some of the crowd gets offended, ya know, the usual.
Batman at this time is busting up a robbery attempt. Things are getting a little crazy as we switch scenes one more time to Commissioner Gordon.
Back at our crime scene, Batman has stopped the crooks. As he is about to leave, Batman finds something on the ground. A piece of the Golden Head fell off. It’s a black diamond.
At the club, we realize that Scarface and the Ventriloquist are up to shenanigans. They set up this opening just to eavesdrop on their fellow criminals. They hear a juicy story about a heist the Joker tried to pull and decide they should see the clown themselves.
At the Batcave, Bruce is examining the black diamond. What he finds disturbs him.
Scarface and the gang head to Arkham to bust out the Joker. The gang, dressed with Batman masks, make short work of the Arkham guards. The Joker is free and meets up with Scarface.
Scarface doesn’t take kindly to the clown’s jokes. Under threats of removing his grin, Joker tells the boys where the money is stashed, at a toy factory.
Batman goes to see Gordon, and finds Gordons: Jim and Bruce. (Bruce Wayne + Jim Gordon = Bruce Gordon?) Anyhow, Bruce relates to Jim and Batman the story of Eclipso.
Joker takes the Scarface gang to the toy factory. The Joker proceeds to play with some wind-up toys and show the boys some Solar Lances (basically light sabers). I gotta tell you, Scarface shows remarkable patience here. The whole point of this escapade was to find the money, and the Joker is not being helpful.
Jim is sent to investigate the Golden Head. There are two more black diamonds on the statue. On his way back to Batman, he is told that the Joker has escaped. Which makes him angry. Anger and black diamonds are a bad mix.
Jim’s Eclipso monster proceeds to go on a rampage to find the Joker. The monster makes his way to the toy factory. Batman so far is ineffective, nothing can stop this brute. As the monster finally finds the Joker, Batman realizes that he has to save his arch nemesis. The police and Scarface’s gang are duking it out as Commissioner Gordon arrives and helps turn the tide. Scarface surrenders, and Batman has found those toy Solar Lances.
Jim crashes his car into the monster as Batman begins to stab it repeatedly with the Solar Lances. Thank goodness a solar based item happened to be lying around!
The monster disintegrates, and the day is saved! As the police are taking the Joker into custody, the clown pulls out a vial, breaks it, and disappears. To be continued in Robin Annual #1!

Well, that was something! There was a lot going on in this story. I haven’t read very many Scarface stories, so this was a nice change of pace for me. I like how they used the obvious hatred that Jim had for the Joker to create the Eclipso monster. The art this issue was pretty great and that Sam Keith cover was awesome.
I am not sure if the Eclipso story line was really progressed, but this was a very good side story. That said, it does make sense within the narrative, because in the Batman family, none of these characters have super powers, so who would Eclipso possess?
Good storytelling and good art, this is an issue that I would recommend, especially if you can find it on the cheap (which is how I prefer my comics).

Superman Annual #3 (1992)
Writer: Dan Vado
Penciller: Scott Benefiel
Inker: Trevor Scott
Editor: Mike Carlin
Superman is zipping through the city of Metropolis with Eclipso on his mind. He overhears that someone has a gun and races to the scene. A man is holding a woman at gunpoint, screaming that he has to get to off the planet before the demon takes him over again.
Superman is able to get the gun away from the man. Bruce Gordon (the original Eclipso) arrives while the police are apprehending the gunman. It turns out the man has a black diamond in his back pocket. An unwitting cop touches it and is engulfed in some kind or armor. The armor begins to attack Superman. Luckily Gordon is on the scene with a solar flashlight and is able to zap the Eclipso armor. As we leave Metropolis the gunman tells Bruce and Superman that he was first possessed in Crater Bay.
Lois is on her way to Crater Bay. She has a lead on some shady hotel developers. Lois arrives in the sleepy hamlet to a very rude innkeeper. Luckily, the man she came to see, Mr. Cross is on the scene as well. Lois tells Mr. Cross that she’ll talk to him after she gets settled in.
As she is going to her room, the innkeeper gives her a necklace that he claims will protect her from demons.
It turns out the innkeeper is eclipsed, and has Mr. Cross’ wife. Mr. Cross must make Lois angry while she has possession of the black diamond, or Eclipso will hurt the wife and Mr. Cross.
We now go to the throne room of Eclipso on the moon. He reveals that he has been scheming for years to make the Man of Steel his, and he is ready for his plan to come to fruition.
Back on Earth, our Eclipso hunters, Bruce and Mona, are driving when their Eclipso detector goes off. A giant monster begins to attack their car. Luckily, Superman swoops in on the scene and begins to fend the monster off. He is holding his own, but he needs help from Gordon and his solar flashlight.
Superman tosses the beast into the solar collectors (conveniently located on this stretch of road) and the monster disintegrates. With all of their equipment broken, Mona and Gordon climb into their car, as Superman flies them into town.
Back in Crater Bay, Mr. Cross is taking Lois to the local diner to do their interview. In an effort to make her angry, Cross pushes hot coffee into her lap and tries to clean it up. Lois, while not having it, keeps her cool. When Cross sees Superman flying into town, he realizes that his time is running out.
So, what to do but throw another cup of coffee in Lois’ lap. That does it. Lois is out.
Lois has a headache, and no Tylenol. Superman picks this horrible moment to try to tell Lois to get out of town. Lois doesn’t take well to being told what to do. She has a headache, a lap full of coffee, and a black diamond. Eclipso time! Eclipsed Lois proceeds to open up a can on the Man of Steel as she tells him why Lois is angry.
While Supes is having his keister handed to him, Bruce is attacked by the Eclipso as well. Mona, seeing that Superman has his hands full, grabs the black diamond, and transforms. She fends off Eclipso long enough for Bruce to help Superman.
Bruce zaps the townspeople with the now repaired solar flashlight. This distracts them long enough for Superman to break free and fly Bruce and himself to safety. Superman’s goal now is to keep Lois busy until sunrise.
So the issue ends with Lois free, but Mona and the town of Crater Bay still in the thrall of Eclipso. Superman is going to have to come up with a plan to save them. To be continued in Justice League America Annual #6 and Action Comics Annual #4.
——
This is by far my favorite of the Eclipso annuals which I have covered. The creepy innkeeper, the crazed gunman, the repeated coffee throwing, there was a lot of interesting moments in this one. I also really like that Lois got her time to shine in this issue. I always say, the best Superman stories highlight the rest of the cast, and Lois held up at least half of the story.
Some nice cliffhangers here as well. Mona and the town of Crater Bay are still possessed, so even though the Lois part of the story has been resolved, their is still work for Superman to do.
All said, I would definitely recommend this issue. I might even say pay cover price ($2.50), just don’t tell Professor Alan of the Quarter Bin Podcast that I said that (I’ll deny it).
