for the first sixteen years of her life, corriene never felt up to the tasks and expectations her mother had upon her. her mother expected greatness from her, to be an influential role in the community like herself ― but corrine was never certain she wanted that for herself.  despite this pressure, corrine never wanted to leave prism falls. she felt a deep love for her home, for her community, even if she didn't want to serve it like her mother. until she met someone that made her realize there could be more out there then the valley. more to life that made it worth living. throughout two years of a fiery and passionate relationship and with encouragement from her love, corrine brought up running away every chance she got — the amazing life they could have together, seeing the world and discovering things she'd only read about in books. when she was finally eighteen and ready to break free; the young girl went to run away with her love. so confident and so full of light, corrine thought nothing of the storm that plagued the valley that night. they barely made it into the woods, before a horrible accident happened and caused him brutal harm; an accident in which her love had to be rushed to valley general. corrine has always blamed herself for the accident, citing that if she hadn’t insisted on running away from prism falls together, then he would’ve never gotten hurt. the accident caused her to realize everything she had thought was wrong; and she couldn’t put him through anything else. corrine ended the relationship, going back to her old ways of thinking prism falls had everything she needed. knowing she could never love another as she loved him and thus not having children of her own, corrine dedicated herself to following in her mother's footsteps, becoming a midwife and from there climbing the ranks to being the head midwife at valley general  — becoming a leader in the community just as her mother always wanted. responsible for training all of prism fall's midwives, providing care and expertise and simply being there for other women who needed her help  — corrine desperately tries to find fulfillment in her role, in a town she once had been so desperate to leave while constantly living with the sting of loneliness and the ache of a life and love she gave up.

☆ﾟ*·ﾟlooking down at the icy pond, allyson couldn't help bend down and try to look at the pond from a lower angle. perhaps then, she'd see some of the sparkles in the lake to find out how thick the ice actually was. "the ice could be really thick or it could not, one cannot tell from here 'cause the sparkle isn't as sparkly as it should be," she explained, not particularly even understanding it herself either. "a broken bone? i don't know that i've ever broken one," she started as she stood up, smoothing out her dress. "a bone should not be broken, but i imagine it's much like the snap of a pack of cards and it does not sound pleasant."

giggling, she nodded, "i've been waiting for winter, 'cause the adventures are more fun in the winter. you can play in the snow and create animals like a cheshire cat or a dodo bird in it!" lifting her head, she looked up at the leaves, holding her hands out, hoping one would still be stuck and fall in her hands. "didn't they just turn almost yesterday? or has it been weeks? i'm not really sure what time it is at all."

" you're right, the sparkle is not as sparkly as it should be. " corrine replied with a soft laugh and a slight shake of her head. what an odd way to phrase that the ice simply was not ready. " oh, i do not recommend it, little mouse. " corrine replied, watching as she smoothed out her dress. " it is much like the snap of a deck of cards, in some ways. though, i fear you would be far more concerned with the pain then the sound. "

corrine raised an eyebrow, listening to allyson's references of a fairytale she'd read. well, minus the dodo birds. they were simply extinct. " i have not played in the snow in years, but as a child, i liked to make snow ferrets. " she smiled, " you could make them as long as you wanted, and it was fanciful, imagining it coming to life. "

“What?” Flynn called back not hearing her at first. Realization struck and he let out a little laugh. “Oh, I appreciate your concern but I’m alright.” He smirked. “This is nothing!” He called back.

He shoved his hands in his pockets. He really needed to get a pair of gloves. Daniel shook his head. “No. I guess I’m sort of in denial.. Summer has always been my personal favorite. What about you? Fall your favorite?”

she raised an eyebrow at him, " suit yourself, falling in that ice would be quite a terrible fate. " corrine mused. cold, dark water is not the way she'd want to exit this world — then again, she tried not to dwell on such a subject too much.

" spring, actually. " corrine replied, reaching into her purse and pulling out a pair of woolen gloves, offering them out to him. she had noticed the way he shoved his hands so firmly into his pockets. " i love the rebirth of everything, the way the trees and flowers come back to life. the way color returns to where winter had drained it. "

"I would be more concerned with this guy escaping and knocking you down, M'am" Heathon explained, his eyes remaining on the wayward stallion as he tugged the reins for control. Unruly horses sure are a pain in the ass, especially when you have to chase them down to the next property line. "Now that's something I definitely couldn't do if you got hurt."

Heathon gently soothed the poll on the horse as he took in the landscape of silverbell farms. "And now the orchards are bare and the land is frozen solid. At least the pigs don't seem to mind, happy wherever you put them."

she wasn't afraid of the horse, but then again, so few animals struck terror into her heart. wild animals, such as the stallion before her, were often misunderstood. even still with knowing the animals were so seldom ever at fault, she had not been on horseback in three decades. corrine smiled at him, " i appreciate your concern, really. " she assured, " and you did a wonderful job soothing him. you must really have a way with horses. " corrine mused, eyes drifting from him, to the creature, then back again.

" the pigs don't mind? really? " she asked, " i suppose they're lucky, then. i'd love not to mind it as much as i do. "

the small mercy she granted him was not one he took for granted. there were plenty of other sitting areas he could enjoy his book at but the magnetic draw was undeniable — logan needed to be in her presence or he'd ache otherwise. it was why he'd been so certain she'd been avoiding him all this time, slipping through his fingertips whenever he had some inkling that she was near. it was unbecoming of him to still sense her like this. he barely had the same skills to sense his own wife.

"thank you," he says, taking a seat in the armchair parallel to the one corrine sat on. he rests his cane to the side of him, shifting slightly in his spot to get more comfortable. "i promise i won't distract you from your own reading." and if this were years ago, the promise would be fruitless. he'd have done anything to keep corrine's attention on him than the book in her hands. now, he feared, any droplet of recognition would have corrine withdrawing from him, and he'd much rather settle for the stiff silence than the lack of her presence at all.

she tried not to watch him, not to let her gaze linger as he moved to sit in the armchair far too close to her — but her efforts were fruitless. corrine, much to her embarrassment, was unable to look away. it had been years since she let him get so close. " i'm afraid you've already done just that. it's only pointless reading, anyway. " corrine remarked, though the light smile on her face gave way to how soft her words really were. it was impossible to be cold, no matter how badly she wanted to continue to push him away. this was exactly why she had to avoid him completely.

corrine let a silence hang in the air, before she spoke up with something that had been on her mind for ages. " you should try a liniment with camphor in it. " she said suddenly, " it won't feel great, but . . . " it could help and gods, she wished she could help — but nothing she could say or do would change anything.

roni beams. that was one of the things about miss corrine that made her one of roni's favourite people — she never once shamed her for her outrageous and otherworldly thoughts. she knows, logically, the seasons changing was by nature. but there was no harm in thinking with whimsy! she imagines it's how roni's mother would indulge her too if she hadn't lost her so young. "exactly. only if it were truly something out of a fairytale, i wouldn't have to wait another week for the ice to properly freeze over." and if there was a huff that escaped her, she didn't notice.

roni tilts her head to the side, glancing curiously at the older woman. maybe she was seeing things, but miss corrine looked almost... melancholic. and that was rarely a word she'd use to describe her. "hm, i see what you mean. spring and summer are such lively seasons, but i don't think winter should be written off so drearily! sure, it makes it much harder to find the little stones and pieces broken off from carriages and whatnot, but the world looks so much more... calm this way. prettier, before all the horses and carriages and mud get in the way, too. it's almost like... the sky is sprinkling crystals when it snows, you know?"

corrine laughed softly, her head nodding along to the younger's words — oh, if only all of this were something out of a fairytale, things truly would be different. very different. the brunette hummed as her head tilted, looking at the ice, " better wait two weeks, little dove. just to be safe. " the words were said as guidance, but they were insistent all the same.

veronica's fascination with trinkets and bobbles never ceased to amuse corrine, to the point where when she found something of that nature, she kept it until she could give it to the younger girl. " it does appear calmer, " she could agree on that much, even though past experiences told her otherwise. appearances could be deceived. corrine couldn't help how her gaze aimed up towards the sky, though no snow was falling in the moment. " it is beautiful, that snow that's untouched by man and creature. the way it sparkles in the sunlight. it used to be my favorite. " the older one conceded, a sigh passing her lips.

the library this early in the morning was the last place he'd think to stumble across her. a foolish thought, really, if he truly considered it ( it was one of the most likely places she'd be ). and yet, when his gaze cast upon her sitting comfortably in an armchair, he couldn't help the surprise in his expression. it had been ... so long since he'd seen her like this. in truth, it'd been years since he'd caught sight of her at all — she always seemed to disappear before he could have a chance to look. he's looking now — drinking in the sight of her. god, she was as beautiful as he remembered. possibly even more beautiful, if he was honest. the way the morning sun leaked in, casting a glow of warmth over her ... wow.

it was easy to forget the heartbreak that resurfaced at the thought of her when she was this close.

"good morning, miss phan," he says, clearing his throat. he'd definitely been ogling for too long. he steps forward as smoothly as his right leg would allow, his weight shifting heavily to the cane in his right hand. "i see we have similar morning plans." he offers a light, tentative smile as he raised the book he was holding in his left hand. "do you mind if i...?"

shit, she had hoped by some strange stroke of luck, he wouldn't have noticed her. foolish of her to hope for such a thing, but she purposefully tried to remain so aloof — leaving before he could arrive somewhere, darting down the nearest alleyway at merely the sight of him or his wife. corrine knew she looked the fool, she had to.

" good morning, " the brunette's voice was soft as her gaze looked up, over the book — and oh, it was completely out of her control how her features softened at the sight of him. so long since she'd let herself so much as glance in his direction, let alone allow her gaze linger and truly drink him in. the years had only made him more handsome — so much time, yet he still was the same somehow.

except he wasn't the same and it was her fault. her throat felt tight as her eyes flickered to the cane for only a second, enough to make her heart wrench with the ache she fell asleep with every single night. a soft sigh escaped her — but she nodded. " of course you can. " corrine answered, sitting up straight, more properly. her nerves were on alert now, hardly able to relax with him so close.

it was like corrine was in roni's head. the temptation of pointing a toe out on the ice to check its strength and how slippery it was ( for future reference, of course ) was likely plastered all over her face. she was short of reaching the pond with her boots, only sighing as she's cautioned not to do was she wanted to do. "lucky i'm skilled in not slipping!" she calls out with a laugh, though she opts to toss a little pebble over the iced pond. it bounces with a small crack. hm.

roni jogs over to catch up, the snow crunching beneath her boots. she should be cold considering she'd opted for less layers than her counterpart, but her excitement of snow and the possibility she'd get to test out her newly mended skates was enough to keep her warm. "right? if i only just experienced the seasons changing now, i'd have claimed it was changing by magic!" she admits, her eyes alight with wonder. "don't you just love it? "

she watched as the pebble went out onto the ice, bouncing with a crack — a small one, but enough that corrine would pause and think twice before stepping out onto that ice. the older brunette smiled softly as veronica moved to catch up with her. how she was outside without some sort of cover on, the woman would never know.

" magic? " corrine repeated with a soft laugh, " yes, i suppose if you'd never seen it before, it would feel like that. something out of a fairytale. " she sighed wistfully as she held the shawl closer with a breeze.

" the changing of seasons or winter itself? " corrine asked, but did not bother to wait for an answer before she continued, " the changing of seasons is . . . bittersweet. beautiful, but a reminder that it comes and goes. i think i much prefer winter to spring, when you see the world come back to life again. " she added, " makes it seem less . . forlorn. "

the library felt like one of the few places corrine found peace, even if only for a little while. it was early, the library had a sleepy air to it as the sun's rays peered in through the large windows. it was perfect — and she sat, curled in the corner in one of the large, old armchairs they had set up for those who rather hang around and read then take their books home. home was too quiet. too still. too lonely. the book in her hands, was one she found kinship in — that made her feel like, perhaps, someone out there could understand how she felt. someone other then him. it was a tragic lovestory, one of hope and anguish, of despair and misunderstandings. unlike her own tale, though, the books always seemed to have a happily ever after. 

the last several sentences, she had gone back and read again and again and again — too distracted for her mind to register the words. she could feel a gaze upon her, and though her eyes had only glanced up for a mere moment; the seconds were enough to know who it was and for her to realize she was cornered in this chair. no alleyway to duck into, no store to hide inside until he walked by.

just him — and every painful memory between them. a deep sigh and a roll of her neck, corrine desperately tried to pay attention to the tale in her hands; but that grew more and more difficult as she heard steps approaching.

" setting a broken bone is not something i have much skill in. " not that she couldn't, in a pinch she could probably help — but it would be nothing compared to an actual surgeon or doctor.

the brunette pulled her woolen shaw closer, also walking around the exterior of the pond. " can you believe it's winter already? seems like just yesterday the leaves had started to turn, and now they're gone. "
