really appreciate the every now and then notifications for someone somehow coming across my posts! i wish i had the willpower to see the series through because it did hold a special spot in my heart for a while, but i’m glad i was able to post what i could
i do not have the mental fortitude to actually read the rest of this chapter, not now and quite possibly not ever, but i skimmed through it to see if it somehow resolved itself in some surprising way that recontextualizes the whole deal.
it does not!
i think i am losing my mind. why is the following chapter about 15-year-old shimamura hanging out with a woman "clearly older than [her]" who "loves high school girls". this book is really starting to feel like a persona game now
anyway, here's an excerpt that jumpscared me. it's very bad. just as a warning.

that's right, we've got a full chapter devoted to, from what i can tell, the main protagonist being groomed by an adult. legitimately unfathomable stuff. i am crumbling into mist and flying away. who have you become, iruma
the blue hair alien girl lore only grows. now there are 28 of them. also, every time these books get into alien stuff, you can see hints of a completely different story that iruma would, i assume, rather be making. there is no reason why any of this exploration of an immortal blue alien with godlike powers formed at the birth of the universe should be here in the middle of the 11th volume of an otherwise entirely grounded yuri light novel lol
i will give this book credit for deciding to make an entire chapter about shimamura's mom hanging out with blue hair alien girl. it's nice to see a real tonal swerve when the series could easily be playing it safe. but sincerely how are these lines making it into a book

the ultimate secret of adachi and shimamura is that it is actually a tragedy where the protagonist is tarumi and the main relationship is frighteningly unhealthy. (i probably should've explored earlier how weird it is that shimamura goes along with adachi's absurd condition of "don't talk to any girl other than me" like it's nothing, and the books seem to accept this as okay!) anyway, please enjoy this passage where iruma personally attacks me:
this is perfectly fine as a thought a kid would have and as a pretty clear example of heat-seeking dramatic irony. cannot pass judgment on this by any means. but as the number one firstname tarumi appreciator, it is sometimes unfortunate to think back on how the series treats her character and reduces her identity to its slightest form. this is adachi and shimamura, though, so i get it. moving on.
just came to another realization: we’re doing a pool-based chapter. it is happening again. the water beckons.

i would like to thank linkedin for inexplicably giving me a $10 amazon gift card for completing a survey, thereby allowing me to get adachi and shimamura volume 11 for "free". we are back
a particularly odd update: the adachi and shimamura series is among the unhinged list of books removed from YA sections in some Indianapolis libraries. these novels, like so many others on the list, are not controversial or inappropriate in any way and are written for the exact audience they’re being hidden or outright banned from. the treatment of libraries, as well as of the visibility of queer existence, by conservatives is deliberately destructive and increasingly dangerous, and i’m not sure what the answer is here. young readers deserve agency and choice, not censorship. consistently embarrassed to live in the US.

i'm no closer to being a fan of much of the novel's main "ending", but the epilogue is pretty much perfect. makes ya forget the last 30 pages were what they were. it's nice to see sayaka at peace with herself and her relationships with those around her. that's the only thing that matters. on that front, iruma delivers with 100% precision. it's exciting to be able to finish reading this book with the sense that i actually liked it better the second time around. that's rare!

hitoma iruma truly will never let an opportunity go to waste when it comes to incorporating water into a story, no matter how it has to happen. this one works well because it's actively connected to the pool stuff from novel 1 and so it becomes Something, yknow? doesn't feel as much like "how are we back here" this way
i remembered right, though, this isnt a scene i like very much :(
feels out of place with the rest of the story, although i guess that's to be expected with the divide between building up to the relationship and then portraying the relationship itself. maybe a similar vibe to chapter 44 of bloom into you - it's not that the characters behaving like they do is beyond the realm of believability, but it's also not really how they act in any other part of the story.
iruma making the characters essentially different people just so they can, uh... kiss each others' necks underwater in a deeply confusing sequence?... doesn't feel quite right. climactic moments in stories should be able to feel like fitting conclusions to character arcs, not something new out of nowhere. i'm probably an outlier here and i accept that
