ARTH-322 Breakthrough Contemporary Artists

For my final assignment, I chose to take elements from Pop Art and NYC 1980s. There were two of my favorites through out the semester so I chose to incorporate them into my finals. This is the last assignment that I have to submit for St. Bonaventure, which is really exciting.

For the first part, I drew the NYC 1980s figures and the heart. I just really enjoy my time here and it’s been really fun. I had them shouting “SBU” which brings to the second lesson. I used the pop art as the letters because when I was flipping through my magazine I notice that a lot of phrases contained these letters. I used markers to draw characters and collaged the phrase.

St. Bonaventure was a great experience for me and I met a lot of people along the way. This class was very fun and I had a great semester. Thank you for everything!

ARTH-102 Abstract Expressionism

For my final assignment, I took elements from the art styles of cubism and fauvism. This is one of the last assignments that I have to turn in as a college student I wanted to make it about St. Bonaventure.

For my background, I used cubism because that was one of my favorite assignments that I did this semester. I thought it would be fun to do it again. I used different three different shapes to make the SBU pop. I used the colors for the background as the same color of St. Bonaventure.

I used fauvism for the make the SBU. I flipped through my magazine trying to find color that represented my experience at SBU. I used yellow for the S because I made many friends along the way, and it is a very happy/friendly color. I used green for the B because St. Bonaventure gave me a fresh start. I used red for the U because I have so much love for this university, and I would want to spend my four years anywhere else.

Thank you for a great semester! It has been really fun. I can’t wait to start my next chapter.

My chalk design was one of my friends laying down on the sidewalk holding a heart with radiants. I was inspired by Haring’s art with the heart in the picture because I’ve loved my time here at St. Bonaventure. It has been so much fun!

Surrealism:

This is my David. He was my model. I decided to make Miller Lite slides for this project.

For my Surrealism Project, I decided to make some shoes/flip flops from a depleted cereal box! I thought of this idea as I was taking out the garbage for my family and saw the perfectly in tacked cereal box in the recyclables. I had my little brother, Pierce, model for me. Forgive his appearance, he had just gotten home from work!

I really like the design of the slides. Frosted Mini Wheats taste so good too.

I constructed my puppet with a Gatorade bottle, LiquidIV packets, plastic spoons, and athletic tape. I used my charging cable as a cord because I didn’t have any string. I cut holes on the side of the Gatorade bottle to put the spoons in. Then I used athletic tape to make sure the packets stayed on for his legs. This is Gator, he really likes to twirl around and dance. He’s a really jolly guy. He’s made of lots of electrolytes and sugar, so he’s very energetic.

The shape I chose for the assignment was a rectangle. I chose the rectangle because people have been depicting this shape for thousands of years. It symbolizes a door, window, or structure in most cases. In some other case, the rectangle represented fields, enclosed areas, or even boundaries of communities. Lastly, some rectangles symbolized trees, bodies of water, and other elements of the natural environment. The rectangle was amongst some of the early geometric shapes.

For this assignment, I chose to do a designer handbag with beauty products in it. I found my phase “we craft recipes” first, which lead me to chose a bag full of beauty products. I thought it would be funny to put the bag in there because if you put all the beauty products together, then it probably wouldn’t want to be something that you would use. I just choose to smaller to bigger lines going out to help make the overall picture to pop.

The device I chose was AI Autonomous driving systems. This is where your car has an AI installed into the computer and it drives for yourself. It can adjust to the weather and environment around you. I thought it would be boring to just draw a regular car, so I decided to draw a rocket on top of the car because everyone thought we would have flying cars by now. I think AI development if something very important in our future just because it can do some things faster than humans. I just don’t think that AI in cars is a good idea because I feel like it can’t account for some things like a human can on the road.

Minimalism

For this assignment, we engineered the camera angle more than we did the light. I dressed up in my all white baseball uniform because we have a black in one of our rooms. I thought it would look cool to have the light hit the uniform, but it didn’t give off the effect that I was looking for. Then, my roommate zoomed out noticed that you can’t seem my face. It looks like a mannequin was dressed in the uniform. I thought it was cool to look at and a little different from the other submission I saw.

I really like how this project turned out! Great job keep up the good work! I enjoy the different colors and shapes you used in your background and the abstract human really tied it all together.

ARTH-102 Cubism

This is Jack one of my roommates this year. I used a lot of colors to describe Jack. I outlined Jack in blue because he is normally a pretty calm guy. I did his skin tone red because he’s a bottle of energy and loves to get hyped especially during baseball games. That is the reason why I put him outlined in blue. He’s a chill guy when you first met him, then very energetic when you get to know. I used the color green for nature because it something that he is really passionate about. I used the purple couch so his presence really stands out because he always brings so much energy.

For this my Art Povera assignment, I wanted to created a sculpture with spare tape that I found around the training room. I created a gorilla because when I was talking with some of my teammates that was the consensus we made. I thought creating a sculpture would be a good switch up compared to drawing on paper because it got me out of my comfort zone. It was way more fun than I thought it was going to be.

The materials I used to created this was white medical tape, black elastic tape, scissors and a marker. The conceptual meaning behind the gorilla is that our strength coach always talks about them. They are a very strong animal, which is why we talk about them when in the weight room.

For my impressionist art piece, I chose to do one of my old roommates from last year Adam Rankie. During the season, Adam had one of the longest consecutive game hitting streaks in St. Bonaventure history. The hitting streak was 23 games which was the second most. It is something that I will never forget because he was one of my best friends that I made here. It was cool to watch him go down in Bonaventure baseball history. In this picture, he was rounding the bases after hitting a home run, which was during the time of his consecutive game hitting streak.

For my art piece, I decided to do use complimentary colored lines for the background. It was simple, but I thought it would help my pop art stand out. When I going through my magazine, I saw a lot of salad dressing for sale. I kept coming across the word “Sale” so I decided to use it in my piece. I learned that the retail market for salad dressing is growing to $100 billion by 2030 in the US. I think salad dressing is used in many different ways, which is why we see it as a growing industry. I think salad dressing influences consumer behavior by impacting the flavor preferences of the consumer.

I chose this pop culture because when I was looking up images this one stood out to me. I’m not really much into influencers and social media, so no images really stood out to me. I chose this picture because it was an image that an online retailer Net-A-Porter got leaked. It blew up on the internet because the representative for the company said “we post images that accurately represent the garments that our customers receive products they expect.” Which this is interesting because how can you accurately represent products if you are using photoshop. My first reaction to this photo was shocking because I honestly didn’t understand why you would use photoshop if you want to show what your product is accurately.

I believe as society we want everything to look perfect and aesthetically pleasuring and that’s why we use photo editing. This takes a strain on mental health because people want to look like the influencers that they see on social media. Seeing images that aren’t fully realistic can really take a toll on your mental health because it’s sort of fake. A lot of companies use consumerism with influencers because they know that consumers will want to look like these influencers. When the consumer ends up buying the product and not accomplishing what an influencer would look like can cause someone’s mental health to be strained.

I think the future of photo editing is going to keep advancing especially with the advancement of AI. You can create any image with AI, which AI uses photoshopping software. Photo editing will keep improving with the software of AI. I think we will get sick of photo editing, but it is going to be something that will always be around because some people will always want to make their images look as good as possible on social media. I don’t really notice any photo editing trends because I don’t really keep up with social media that much but I’ve seen some AI images and I think that is a trend that we will continue to see advancing in the long term.
