He didnāt smile in return, taking a deep breath and letting it out in a cool stream, finally nodding.Ā āI have.ā Malik swallowed hard as he followed, and gestured toward his big steel-gray Mercedes SUV.Ā āYes, theyāre fine. JRās been really getting good at hockey, showin up them white kids.ā He went around and swung himself up into the driverās seat.

He laughs, getting up from the desk and stretching.Ā āI could get us a room tonight? Order in? Sushi works for me just fine and we could stretch you out like one of those platters you see in Japanese business meetings.ā

He starts to protest, but changes his mind. Thereās no point, really. He just tries to communicate his love through the second, longer, softer kiss, and hope that thatās enough for Poe to not leave him.Ā āIām not; you are.ā Malik nods enthusiastically.Ā āOf course, Iām always down to eat. What you want?ā

The guilt creeps in more, making his chest hurt a little.Ā āI know. Youāre right. I mean...Maybe one day weāll find a way to make it work. You never know. But...itās not a guarantee at all, no.ā He sighs against the kiss, other hand moving to touch Poeās jaw.Ā āYouāre the smartest person I know. Iām sorry.ā

Because despite Malikās wife, their careersŃ and the wave of homophobic hatred this could bring their way, heās still too weak to refuse the man. Has been for years.Ā āWhy is this only getting harder, Mal? I thought weād grow tired of each other by now.ā
Softening even more, Malik slides his hand down into Poeās, gripping his palm.Ā āI know, me too. And I know itās not fair. I feel guilty about it all the time...sometimes I feel like Iām ruining your life. Being selfish. But I guess Iām just a selfish guy.ā

That cocky grin returns, happy and proud to get his way.Ā āThanks, babe, you wonāt regret it.ā Leaning forward, Malik reaches to grab Poeās wrist, lightly stroking along the inside with his thumb.Ā āThat donāt mean you have to rush off now, does it?ā

āOr it means Iām unbeatable.ā He understood how stats might say something like that about him, but not Poe. Sighing, he leaned on a flat palm splayed on the surface of the desk.Ā āI have. I feel like a pussy for not doing it sooner, even. Thereās no reason I should be scared to fight people at this point. No matter who it is. If I have enough time to train...ā He shrugs. And ignores the last part, because he has no desire to talk about his wife.
