FLASHBACK // LILY X BEN:
he watches as she jumps from her perch, steaming hot food splattering onto the floor. as if this place couldn’t get any grimier. ben pulls a face as he glances around, sniffing out the corpses of rotting rodents and frowning at the uneasy skittering noises of insect colonies congregating nearby. he’s shacked up in plenty of places like this before, but not since moving to the city and not since autumn rolled around with that unforgiving northern chill in tow.
isn’t she cold? ben lifts a brow as she brandishes the tiny plastic fork at him, searching her bare arms for goosebumps. when he finally remembers to acknowledge her threat, it’s with a laugh and the ostentatious flash of his favorite knife. “i’m not being funny, babe, but mine is bigger than yours.” he tucks it away again as she smirks, hands burrowing into the pockets of his letterman jacket.
“i’m a really good tracker,” ben rolled his eyes at the teen wolf pun even though he was secretly endeared by just how impressed with herself she seemed to be over such a lame quip. she’s cute. he’d already noticed as much in passing, but for some reason it feels like he’s really noticing her for the very first time.
and his heartbeat stutters.
“what’s your name? do you live here all alone? how long have you been like me?” he’d meant to start slow and then a sudden surge of nervousness took him by surprise. he’s not afraid of her, but he also can’t quite look her in the eye anymore without a violent crimson heat flooding into his cheeks. instead his dark gaze flickers around the abandoned old church again, sweeping across padlocked doors and uprooted pews with feigned interest.
“i’ll take you to get more food if you’ll still hungry.” he’ll be shit out of luck until at least midday tomorrow unless he can swipe a couple soft pretzels or an apple on the way home, but it would be worth it for her. he just knows it. “or how about breakfast tomorrow? i’m makin’ coush coush for my sister. i could bring you some, or you could come over and meet her. our foster parents are never home so it’s usually just the two of us. she’d probably love to meet you and everyone says she’s way nicer than i am.” maybe he should’ve brought caroline along with him tonight, because right now ben feels like he’s scrabbling blindly for the words that’ll keep her from running away again.
Lily rolled her eyes at his quip about the size of his weapon, though what makes her jaw clench isn’t the knife that gleams in his hand but the pet name he gives her. Babe. Her grip around the plastic fork tightens, knuckles whitening. ❝ Call me babe one more time, we’ll see which one of us proves to be more deadly. ❞ She warns with all the fierceness and bravery of a warrior, not a homeless werewolf wielding a plastic fork in an abandoned church that smelled worse than the boys locker room. Brown hues flick towards the knife in his hand, narrowing cautiously as he sheathes the knife as quickly as he brandished it.
That was his second mistake, his first was coming here unannounced and alone.
❝ God, you really enjoy stroking your own ego, don’t you? ❞ She scoffs, an incredulous look sweeping across her features. He was like every other high school jock in history. Egotistical and loved the sound of his own voice. How disappointing. Lily really thought he might have been different for a second, for a fleeting moment she let herself believe she might have found somebody who was different to the rest of the sheep who followed the crowd in high school. This jock was just like everybody else, only a little furrier every time there was a full moon.
❝ What does any of that matter? It’s not like you’ll ever see me again after tonight. In a few weeks I’ll be a distant memory and you’ll be chasing some other girl in a short skirt. ❞ She sighs heavily, pressing her finger tips against the curved tines of the plastic fork. She’s growing bored of his company, if she had wanted to swap stories about their first change during a full moon around a camp fire then she would have stuck around that night she witnessed him change under the bleachers.
Her brows furrowed in confusion, arms folding across her chest. Was he being serious? ❝ Let me get this straight, ❞ Lily said with a wag of her finger, stepping forward slightly, ❝ I stole your wallet, spent your money and have threatened to stab you violently. Twice. And you want to take me for a bite to eat? ❞ Did he think this was flirting? Lily honestly couldn’t tell how he was reading the situation between the two of them right now as anything but hostile, but here he was, offering to make her breakfast and inviting her around to his house to meet his sister. ❝ Did somebody spike your cereal with pure silver or something? ❞
